Sold-out variation disappears from dropdown instead of showing "Out of stock"
Summary: something_delight is new to selling on eBay and observed that when setting a variation's quantity to zero, it disappears instead of showing as "out of stock." cityslickercreations2004 explained that variations should remain but appear greyed out when out of stock and shared advice on managing listings. christworks recommended listing each model separately to avoid confusion and potential issues with buyers. inhawaii suggested that the variation might have been deleted by mistake, and something_delight later discovered it was due to a disabled account function.
Hi, this is my first sale on eBay and I'm still learning how everything works, so sorry if this is a basic question.
I have a listing with variations (a dropdown where the buyer picks a specific model). One of the models sold, so I set its Quantity to 0 to mark it as sold out. But instead of showing that variation as "out of stock" or greyed out in the dropdown, it completely disappeared from the list — buyers can no longer see it as an option at all.
I've seen other multi-variation listings where sold-out options stay visible in the dropdown, just greyed out and marked "(Out of stock)" instead of being removed.
Is there a setting I'm missing that keeps sold-out variations visible instead of hiding them? Or is this just how eBay's current listing editor behaves, with no way to change it?
Thank you for your help!

I'd bet a nickel you deleted it by mistake rather than it being a glitch.

OPSep 15, 2026 at 7:50 AMIt turned out to be much simpler: that function was disabled in my account settings, which caused that variation to simply be deleted.

·Sep 15, 2026 at 6:07 AM@something_delight I don't even see a variation listing in your store. What's the listing number?

OPSep 15, 2026 at 6:16 AMwhen I set Quantity to 0 for one of the model options in the variation dropdown, that model doesn't just show as "out of stock" — it disappears from the dropdown list entirely, as if it was never an option in the first place.

·Sep 15, 2026 at 7:51 AMI use variations often and will try to help. I have experienced some of what you have described.
E.g. your listing has 4 variations with one each. Variation 2 sells. The quantity for #2 variation will reset to zero. You should now have a listing with 4 variations, 3 with 1 available and 1 with zero available. The buyer may only select from variations with a quantity of 1. Variation #2 should be greyed out.
See #267127303146 for a long standing example.
**You do not need to manually change the quantity.
I have had variations totally disappear if I am editing and I manually switch a quantity to zero. But, what the heck. If I am out of stock, I am out of stock.

This is going to be off topic, but I think you need this advice.
I would list each model seperately and not use variations.
Variation listings are for the same item, but may come in various sizes or colors. Your listing is for different items.
I can 100% guarantee you that if you do not change how you have your listing, someone will make a purchase and believe they are getting all six models since that is what is in your main photo. The fact that they have to select a model won't matter when they demand a refund or open an INAD return on you. Since you are in the Ukraine, you fall under eBay's Bad Buyer Experience program which is very strict based on what I've seen other sellers under it post.
I strongly advise you to list each model seperately. Doing so will not only give you a ltitle extra protection from an INAD, but it also will help buyers find the model they want since you can be more specific with your title.

OP3 weeks agoThanks for the information; I’ll keep it in mind for the future. I had actually been setting up a new type and model name in the "variation" field when listing items—though I realize now that this was only visible to me. I had seen others using that method when dealing with large inventories to save time on listing, but the information you shared is genuinely useful, and I’ll definitely take it into account when creating listings going forward. Have a great day!
