So there is a bump in the road
Why is it that some folks love to through Ebay under the bus any chance they get.
Don't bite the hand that feeds you. It seems like some folks love to trash talk Ebay for anything and everything. When these folks wouldn't be in business very long if they tried to run their own business their own way. I look at this way, Ebay and I are together, when he falls, I feel his pain and want to bring him up, not try to push him down any more, These folks have no clue..... on thinking they are better and can do a better job. Have a little gratitude al least.

·4 months agoWe can only get so upset about something we really feel strongly about. But when changes are imposed, Americans respond accordingly. When something works, and then is broken, people get upset.

·4 months agoI was able to access the seller hub and my listings, but couldn’t log in or reach the community.
I’ve also noticed slowdowns on Sunday nights before, and I think Mr. Lincoln even had a thread about it a couple of months ago. Just saying, it might have started earlier and then escalated.
Besides, I think Live did it. 🤣

·4 months agoI was able to access the home page as well as my seller hub, just little else.
Every other site I've dealt with has had periodic problems - comes with the territory - but it has been customary to post an 'out of order' notification and not let users - particularly paying users (yes, eBay *does* owe us as we are paying for services) just hang. Heck, this was commonsense back when I was taking Visual Basic back in the early oughts.

·4 months agoAt my former job one of my responsibilities was keeping everyones company e-mail up and running, logins, passwords, etc.
I noticed something...
It's amazing how we could have non-stop 24 hours a day e-mail without interruption for days, weeks, months, even years ... but the moment the e-mail goes down people are up in arms. They would rant "This is (here's that word again) unacceptable"!

·4 months agoIsn't that natural.......human nature? Something so "normal" is interrupted....
My problem isn't the down time, it's the lack of communication. Not knowing what was going on from ebay, even after hours of a global problem. And the lack of communication is an ongoing problem.
Something as simple as the removing the buy button form seller's own listings.... How much time did sellers spend trying to find out what was wrong, thinking they had removed it from all listings? A simple announcement would have saved angst. Multiply that by the number of "small" changes ebay makes that no one has any info about and it's a real pain.

·4 months agoWe have become dependent on these services and expect them to be at 100% operational at all times. There was an incident here some time ago where a person died due to a glitch in the '911' emergency call service. I didn't follow the story so I don't know if there were any lawsuits.
I shudder to think about how we got along without cell phones (I still don't have one) ... emergency responders like the police would have to find a call box on the street to find out what's happening for example.
Thank the inventors for bringing this technology to us - in addition to the telephone part, it also provides a healthy, safe way for our kids to learn things.

You already have that if you have a cell phone.
I want a 'Beam Me Up' device, but my friend just reminded me that someone would have to invent a Starship first, so my dreams are dashed ...
(any Chinese inventors here? Love your flying cars!)

·4 months agoThe thing with the Star Trek communicator is that they were shown to work communicator direct to communicator. No cell towers in between so no call charges. If only?

·4 months agoMost of us understand that technical issues will happen. However, that doesn't mean that sellers and buyers won't get frustrated with the site when glitches take place. Better communication from our eBay friends would go a long way to help out when such site issues take place. 🙏

·4 months agoHow do you think eBay will be able to notify a few million users when their entire world has just collapsed?

·4 months agoHow about a message on the home page, like normal websites? Even back in the 90s, we could either put a message "Under Construction" on the home page (or page under construction), or redirect users to a page with some sort of "Hey, we're having problems with the site, sorry".
grann-4629
·4 months agoThat would work. I assumed from all the complaints that their entire site, including their home page was down. I remember those 'under construction' signs, but I think they were used when an operating site was doing a mod or upgrade.
tarotfindsandmore
·4 months agoThey were everywhere, we were always "improving" lol.
I probably wouldn't use that message for this current fiasco, but it would be pretty easy to just put a bold header on the home page advising users of intermittent usage interruptions.
If the home page is down, the option to redirect to another page should work. The admins could very easily have replaced the landing page with another page like the stupid "It's not you..." message.
grann-4629
·4 months agoI am not that familiar with how the internet really works, that is I didn't know that a dead site could post a message on another site. That's why I went to Google ... I think I wasted about 0.32 seconds doing this 😫

·4 months agoSeriously? You're likening ebay to a parental figure. I'm pretty neutral on ebay overall, but let's be real here. The ebay platform is most assuredly not the hand that feeds us. There is no ebay without sellers. We pay for the privilege of hawking our wares on this site. They do not give us anything. It's a great life and there's lots of money to be made, but it's our work, our time and energy, and our goods that make ebay what it is, not the other way around.
I don't mind the fees. I don't mind the inevitable ebbs and flows. I don't mind goofy customers and non-existent customer service, but I don't believe that feeling chagrined about being cut off from revenue while we're paying fees (how many sellers are paying for clicks on items that can't be purchased right now?) constitutes "throughing" ebay under the bus. This is a symbiotic relationship, not a charity.
Honestly, I'm not particularly bent out of shape about this service interruption. As others have mentioned, it used to be a heck of a lot worse. The pollyanna stuff, however, is mildly nauseating. There are sellers who depend on this site and a full day of inactivity hurts.
grann-4629
·4 months agoThey do not give us anything.
eBay gives you worldwide exposure ... is that worth nothing to you? It's still a lot cheaper than putting a colour 'for sale' ad in a newspaper or magazine.
eBay gives me an opportunity to see your stuff, and buy it ... you don't have to stand outside or in a mall at a table hoping a buyer will come along. Check the rental rates for those mall tables - it's not cheap.

·4 months agoAll I want is NOTIFICATION.........so I don't waste time.
I was trying to upload a listing from 6 bit....the upload started and then quit.....none of usual notification that there was something wrong with the listing. I examined the listing, tried again.....same. Did another listing..same. Thinking there was something wrong with 6 bit, I putzed around with it for awhile. Then saw some intermittent problems with ebay/boards.......putzed around with firefox, searched for problems, etc. Read/posted on the boards..... Tried again...... Probably spent 2 hrs trying to find a "cure"....... Not until I read Value Added Resource did I realize it was a general outtage...... Aggravating.

·4 months agoThat's the thing - sellers trying to suss out the problem, checking our own systems, rebooting, going through settings, searching online, etc. etc. - it would be nice to know at some point so we don't waste so much time.

·4 months agoExactly. This started for me late Sat night and I spent a good while trying to figure out what was wrong on MY end. until I gave up and went to bed hoping all would resolve itself in the morning.
A timely announcement of an outage would have been appreciated.

Lots of excuses, but no reasonable explanation for eBay not making the attempt at some communication. It's just unprofessional.

·4 months agoWhen things go bad or if something doesn't go the way it is they blame Ebay. Just the way it is. In some cases like technical issue Ebay is experiencing it is Ebay's issue but in other issues like overall lack of sales it's the sellers issue. Unfortunately there is less gratitude in the world these days. There is more demand and very high unrealistic expectations.

I had auctions ending last night and this morning. Fewer than in some recent weeks.
I was disappointed by the bidding, and the apparent interruption in the bidding. I thought it over, and I will not be taking advantage of the Ebay amnesty for cancelling auctions.
I had no clue how much these items were going to bring, and was willing to accept the opening bid.
I will be relisting those that did not sell.
There are many countries in this world which probably should be cut off from the internet, in the interest of the security of the internet. I would not object, if the world took action to cut them off, before their own leaders cut them off.

·4 months agoWait, what? Did you just say there are some countries whose people deserve access to the internet, and other countries where their people should be excluded from the internet? Maybe you can talk the Illuminati into "taking action" on this one.

·4 months agoLooks like the Manitoba gov is passing a new by-law that would prohibit minors from using social media sites and AI stuff.
Can anyone here, especially those in by-law enforcement, tell me how this new law will be enforced? Most kids today know way more about workarounds than the adults who make the rules.
It's a 'set-up to fail' for enforcement here .. as long as I, or any parent/guardian can access Facebook, so can my 12 year old Granddaughter. I would love to know how they are going to access it's effectiveness.

·4 months agoPeople are just venting. Absolutely, they aren’t going anywhere. People can throw around a word like “unacceptable” - It just doesn’t mean very much, because people are going to accept this bump in the road.
I’m not minimizing what a select set of sellers went through – absolutely not great to have an outage when you have auctions going on. For the vast, vast majority of sellers – this is nothing more than an annoyance.
Seriously – how often does this thing happen? The eBay site works extremely well for me 99.9% of the time. On the rare occasion that I do encounter an issue, it is usually gone within a matter of minutes.
and, no – I don’t think that eBay owes to me an explanation. They are back up when they are back up. Understood that some sellers would like yo know when to plan their activities. But, even huge seller can take a day of poor site performance. Time to catch up on things like 5S, training, sourcing, etc.
chapeau-noir
·4 months agoI agree with you save for the highlighted bit. They certainly DO owe an explanation when their service crashes for hours with inexplicable problems, even if it's to acknowledge a problem that they're struggling to solve. This is no more than simple professionalism.

·4 months agoIf we're all in this together, then why does it always take eBay so long (if at all) to tell its "partners" what's going on, and then describe the gaping pothole as a "bump in the road?" Why do numerous folks have to "bite the hand that feeds you" before anyone gives up any information regarding a major, sitewide service interruption?
cheech2021
OP4 months agoThere you go Its "sitewide service interruption", and like all bumps they get fixed in time.
The sinks are backed up, you call the plumber, and they comes out, works on it for a bit and in time, the water flowing.
