So much for 'buyers can no longer cancel auction orders' !
Summary: gurlcat shared a confusing experience regarding an auction order, highlighting a policy issue where a buyer requested to cancel an unpaid auction, contrary to the stated policy. The auction had not been paid yet, but a cancellation request was unexpectedly processed. luckythewinner asked if gurlcat was protected against payment disputes, to which they confirmed full protection. reallynicestamps speculated that the issue might relate to the inconsistent implementation of autopay. bdmh-enterprises mentioned that allowing cancellation might save time for sellers, but gurlcat clarified that their autopay setup should prevent such issues, yet sometimes doesn't apply to all buyers. Overall, adamcartwright noted that the situation was fortunately resolved.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I got this a few minutes after one of my auctions closed:
-Uh, why would any seller have already shipped when it hasn't been paid yet? -that doesn't even make sense. 馃檮
Anyway is there something wrong with my eyes, or does the new policy not say that it's impossible for auction winners to even make the request? -As you can see^ this wasn't just the buyer writing to request; it was an official FILED request, which there is not even supposed to be an option available for!
If that's supposed to mean 'only auctions already paid for' it sure as heck doesn't clarify that. @devon@ebay could you please ask about this, and/or notify them that either the new policy isn't fully functional, or if unpaid auction wins are still subject to cancellation requests, it's not stated in the policy article? -Use my example if you want, this was item # 128088802660 .
Whether or not it's paid yet should be a totally moot point, because either way it would mean starting over after 7 days wasted, and all the other bidders beaten falsely.
Welp anyway I declined this request, the buyer paid, and it's an EIS order so I have no 'retaliation return' situation to worry about. Just wanted to share this for any other auction sellers: apparently the new policy isn't as solid as they make it sound.

OP1 week agoIKR. But now I really wonder about the question they asked yesterday: "Is there any gold or silver in this lot?"
At the time I just thought it was the stupidest question I'd ever been asked, considering this was a 'junk/craft' lot -like who would knowingly put gold or silver in one of those, and even if they did, not point it out in the photos and description?
But now I wonder, were they trying to make sure there ISN'T any precious metal, because that could cause the package to be rejected at customs? If so, I'm glad I just gave the most honest answer: "It's highly unlikely."

路1 week agoI don't use auctions, but can't the buyer just not pay? Allowing them to request a cancel saves sellers the time of waiting the 4 or 7 days to have to cancel anyway.

OP1 week ago 路 EditedNo because I have autopay enabled. For some reason it doesn't seem to apply to ALL buyers (see my reply to reallynicestamps), but it does apply to most, so this buyer's account probably would have been auto-drafted 1 hour after the auction closed. But they decided to pay manually instead, as soon as I declined the request.

路1 week agoMight it have something to do with the ubiquity of "autopay" which insists that bidders have a method of payment registered even before they bid?

OP1 week ago 路 EditedI'd like to say no, but with as screwy as that thing is, nothing would surprise me.
For what it's worth, the autopayment for auctions occurs 1 hour after the closing time, but that's only if the seller has the feature enabled, AND if the buyer was enrolled in autopay. For whatever reason, eBay didn't fully roll it out to all buyers. About a quarter (maybe even a third) of my auction winners' orders just say "Awaiting payment" -meaning the normal 4 bleepin' days to pay, as if I didn't have autopay turned on at all.

This winner -I don't even know because they requested to cancel so soon after the auction closing, I hadn't seen which payment version they had. Then I immediately declined the request, and they immediately paid a few minutes after that. All that happened in less than 10 minutes. So they might have been on Autopay, but then paid manually instead. (The whole point of having 1 hour is to allow buyers to change payment methods if they want).

路1 week agoAre you also protected from payment disputes?

OP1 week ago 路 EditedYup. Ev-er-y-thang.
