So how bad is it to get a return INAD?
I sold a Dooney and Bouke belt that is clearly marked size 34. The buyer just messaged me that it is not size 34. (I wanted to respond that maybe he wasn't a size 34, but I didn't!) Anyway, I know I'm going to have to take it back, but if I ask him to mark 'wrong item sent', is that less damaging than 'item not as described'? I don't guess I'll get dinged too hard by eBay, I don't think I've ever had an INAD before.

One Not As Described claim if you handle it in accordance with eBay policy will have ZERO affect on your selling account.
There mere fact that a return request causes the "damage" (minimal that it is) the reason doesn't matter and at this point REALLY doesn't matter.
Accept the return, the buyer will be issued a return label (you pay for it). Once you have received the return promptly issue the refund through the dispute.
One thing for sure, if you attempt to fight this you could end up with an Unresolved By Seller Defect and those can really hurt.
If not as described claims are a rare event for you then this situation means nothing.
I see no point in agitating your buyer by trying to educate them. I know you have picture of the Size stamp but one brand's 34 is another brand's 32, this is especially true for used stuff.

OP9 months agoThanks for all the quick responses. The markings are clearly shown in the pictures and I list the size in the listing, but I will, as suggested, add the inches to my belt listings and that one when I relist it. I'll just tell him just to file a return, I'll have to pay for the return shipping. BTW, he says he always wears a size 30 or 32 belt. If that's the case, why did he order a 34? Hmmm...
I know this isn't big, I'm just annoyed (and cranky!).

·9 months agoIs it a belt that can be resized by cutting down the length? If that’s the case it’s possible someone bought prior, cut it down then returned it(ran into this situation twice).

Don't go back anf forth with the buyer.
Point out ONCE that the belt is clearly marked as a 34.
If they still insist it is not, have them returm for a refund.
As long as ebay does not have to step in, you'll be alright.

Here’s what a1 says about belt sizing. Maybe sell belts as inches and not attribute the number to a size.
Belt size is typically determined by adding approximately two inches to your pants or waist size, but the most accurate methods involve measuring your waist with a flexible tape measure at the height you'll wear the belt, or measuring from the buckle fold to the hole on an existing belt you wear comfortably. When measuring, keep the tape snug, as this measurement will be the actual belt size.

If your buyer is just messaging you, and has not yet filed for a return, you are not obligated to do anything until they do.

You are not required to tell the buyer how to file for a return. Maybe they have lost the privilege of doing so and can't, or are simply fishing for a discount.

·9 months agoI think Dooney belts might run small because I had a similar claim several years ago. I wonder if you have the same buyer I had.
I got a message saying "This does not fit. I would like to return it. I dont think that is a "size" marking This is like a 36. Either way, I prefer not to argue." He was claiming that the "36" wasn't a size marking.
For the return, "wrong item sent" is still a NAD (not as described) reason, as is damaged, broken, not as pictured or described.
(It's not a good idea to try to avoid a NAD by asking the buyer to choose a remorse reason. As long as you don't have claims often, it shouldn't hurt your account.)
I'd put a note in the descriptions to the effect of, "although the belt is marked as a size 34, it may run smaller." Include measurements from end to end and suggest that the buyer compare those measurements to a belt they own.

·9 months ago1st, is it clearly marked AND you showed that in the pictures of the listing? I would respond back with that picture and ask why they are saying it is not 34 when it is clearly marked?
2nd; for an $18 item, you might want to just 'refund' and be done?
Regarding the return type:
Not sure which one you want to use, but some will require you to pay return shipping as well as ding your 'seller metrics'. 1 won't hurt you, but I would not invite it.
