Shipping Label issue for a return
Summary: A participant sought advice on handling a shipping label issue after selling a device with a lithium-ion battery, which requires hazardous material labeling. caldreamer noted the difficulty of changing labels through eBay's return system, suggesting creating a new label off eBay. krazzykats mentioned using hazmat stickers and christworks clarified that USPS has their own stickers, advising on exemptions and legal responsibilities. slippinjimmy added insight on eBay charges, and gurlcat expressed skepticism about the buyer's actions, suggesting a possible scam. qeqo_0 humorously pointed out a simple solution to adjust the label.
Hi, I am new to selling and recently sold a video game live device. I shipped according to ebay's shipping recommendation but I did not know it had a lithium ion battery in it which has to be declared so it can be marked hazardous. The item arrived and does not work so the buyer was sent a return label. He went to the post office and they told him that he needs to have that hazardous warning. When I go into selling and shipping labels, it does not give me the option of canceling the return shipping label, only the one I sent which has indeed arrived and cannot be canceled. Does anyone know what to do to cancel that label and have it labeled correctly?

Just click on the big letter G to change it to H ... don't need a whole new label!!

·3 weeks agoCall me cynical but I don't think for one minute this buyer actually went to the P.O. at all, and is more likely a scammer who knows about this hazardous material thing, and is hoping to create a situation where eBay ends up stepping in and snatching the refund from the OP.
@honkey131313 Was this the Mario Kart Live item for $99? Okay, that was a Ground Advantage item, so the return label should be as well, and that means all it needs is that FREE warning sticker placed on the package. If your buyer REALLY went to his P.O. they could have just given him one and put it on themselves!!

If your buyer was not able to use the label AND it did not get an acceptance scan then eBay shouldn't charge you for the label.
If it got scanned before the buyer revealed the contents then you are out of luck probably but at least since there would not be a delivery or in-transit scans eBay won't be issuing a refund.

·3 weeks agoNo extra charges for shipping ground advantage, so label can still be used.
You just simply need to put the hazmat stickers on the box and ship it. You can find them all over the internet.

·3 weeks ago@gurlcat USPS does not have the DOT labels, which is what @krazzykats posted. USPS does have their own internal yellow Hazmat stickers.
@honkey131313 It is likely the device is exempt from needing the DOT label if the battery is installed and it meets the low quantity exception. Most USPS clerks don't know that and all clerks have been heavily warned about the Hazmat rules earlier this year. If you declare an item is Hazmat at the drop off, they are going to require the label, even if it meets the exception.
Send them the UN3481 label above as long as the battery is inside or packed with the equipment it is for. They can fill in the spot with their phone number, and tape it to the box on the address side of the box.
As for you, you need to learn what items are defined as Hazmat. Carriers charge if you don't properly declare it and they discover it and there can be civil and criminal liabilities as well.

·3 weeks agoThis is a big problem. No way for you to change label in the EBAY return system.
Not only does USPS require "warning label" for lithium batteries but they also charge fee for shipping "hazardous" item.
You would have to pay and create label "off EBAY" and send copy of this label to the customer to return the item to you.
This could be problem because you would need the exact "weight & measures" of the box the customer is using to return item.
