Shipping cost eBay failure
Summary: rockmaker expressed frustration over a shipping cost discrepancy on eBay, where the buyer was charged $5.68 for shipping, but the seller was billed $11.57 for a label. Other participants suggested that the issue might stem from an error in listing settings, possibly due to mistakenly selecting a flat rate option. Several participants argued that user error was likely responsible, encouraging rockmaker to review their settings carefully. Despite the explanations, rockmaker remained convinced that eBay had altered their settings without consent, leading to the increased charges.
eBay charged my buyer $5.68 to ship an item I sold them, but wants $11.57 for a shipping label. The weight and size of the package has not changed. So I'm looking for any reason I shouldn't just cancel the sale, and sell somewhere else. I'm NOT doing that!

·3 weeks agoNot sure about rockmaker's issue, but. I once went to print a label and had issues. Everyone is so quick to place blame on the user. They weren't there, they don't know. I don't sell media, I sell mostly Hot Wheels. Image my surprise when I went to print a label and it was only$4.25. ??? Fortunately for me I checked and Ebay, yes that's right, Ebay had changed my setting to Media Mail. I changed it back and all was ok. I never changed it. Why would I? I offer free shipping!

·3 weeks agoThe problem with the whole "I didn't do it, ebay did it" argument is that if ebay made changes to your account (like opting you into Business Policies) it would affect all of your listings, not just one.
The fact that this is on just one of your listings (and one that sold a while back) means that you just accidently hit the wrong button when you listed it. ebay did not go in and pick one of your listings at random and change it.

This is YOUR error but you are unwilling to accept that you are human and made a mistake.
I don't understand why so many members come here with user errors and are unwilling or unable to accept responsibility for their own mistakes.
My suggestion is to go back to that order and do a "sell similar." Then come back and post a screen shot of what shows for shipping.
As an example, I use a flat rate shipping policy that looks like this:
But if I put in a 10 lb. package with oversized measurements (even if correct) and (incorrectly) choose my wrong shipping policy, my buyer will still only pay $6.94 and I'm responsible for the huge balance.

·3 weeks ago · EditedSounds like user error and a flat rate slipped through.
Happens to the best of us; dust yourself off, eat the loss this time, and check that everything stays calculated.

·3 weeks ago · EditedSorry you are frustrated.
Seems like something went wrong.
Maybe check your other listings and make sure your shipping is set up correctly.

·3 weeks agoYou might want to check a few of your listings by doing sell similar to see what type of shipping (flat or calculated) is entered (then delete those drafts of course). I checked a few and the rates entered didn't change when I used different zips, unless that's normal for your central location.

·3 weeks ago@rockmaker If you are talking about the Platter Cake Dish the simple answer is because you had a $5.68 Flat Rate Shipping attached to the Listing. Makes no difference where the Buyers Zipcode is from, that is all they pay.
rockmaker
OP3 weeks agoThis is what I'm saying, but apparently its going over! I do NOT choose flat rate shipping, never did. So how did it change?

·3 weeks agoUser error.
Even if Chad woke up from his nap at eBay HQ one day and decided they were going to mess with you by changing your listings from calculated to flat rate, it is still your responsibility to ensure your listings are correct.

·3 weeks agoIf we are talking about the PILLIVUYT ~ 11-1/4-Inch Small Round Porcelain Serving Platter Cake Dish there is definitely something wrong with the shipping details on your end - this heavy porcelain platter could be shipped to me in NC at the low low price of just $5.68 - Please look over your other listings and ensure your weight and dimensions are correct.
rockmaker
OP3 weeks agoEverything is correct. I don't use flat rates, never have, so why this now? Or did eBay change something without my knowledge or consent, like with the best offer tab, how they click it for you, when you didn't choose it. And who's getting the extra $5? Let me guess

·3 weeks agoWhere are you getting the label......... ? Frankly, the reversal of the amount of charges sound like you are opted into this:
https://www.ebay.com/ship/prf/carrier
eBay discounted rates
Offer buyers our negotiated carrier rates on all listings with calculated shipping.
but then trying to buy a label somewhere other than Ebay......
just a guess........

·3 weeks agoSomething isn't correct - What is the weight and package dimensions and the to and from zip codes? Have you tried bumping the weight up to over 2 lbs to see if triggers the discounted haevy package weight? If so, make your package weigh more - add packing paper.

OP3 weeks agoAll good, nothing changed, and its going to Georgia

·3 weeks ago · Editedlooks like the $5.68 is a flat rate to any zip? Not a calculated price?
rockmaker
OP3 weeks agoExactly, why? I never choose flat rates.

·3 weeks agoeBay didn't decide to charge your buyer $5.68.
eBay didn't decide to charge you $11.57 for a label.
These things are determined by how YOU set up the listing.
You have no one to blame but yourself.
rockmaker
OP3 weeks agoNever changed a thing in over 20 years, so that would be no
jonathanbrightlight
·3 weeks agoYou're saying you had the same listing for 20 years, with no changes, and there's no possibility you clicked the wrong option or missed something when listing?
Sure thing.
rockmaker
OP3 weeks agoNo, I've been selling for over 20 years, and DO NOT use flat rate shipping. Somewhere, somehow it was changed. Sure thing
jonathanbrightlight
·3 weeks ago"Somewhere, somehow". AKA, you made a mistake.

·3 weeks ago · EditedBlame the USPS for this, not eBay. The way shipping increases have been happening the last few months, it's hard to keep up with them.
eBay only charges the customer the amount you put into the listing. When USPS rates go up and you do not change your listings to increase the postage charge to the customer, the difference has to come out of your pocket.
Don't cancel the sale. It isn't the customer's fault and they shouldn't be punished for it. Also, eBay doesn't like it when sales are cancelled and will give you a mark on your account for it.

OP3 weeks agoI don't use a flat rate. This shouldn't be an issue

·3 weeks agoAccording to your Solds you did Flat Rate in August with the Dish Set...same $5.68 Shipping Value. Go figure?
rockmaker
OP3 weeks agoExactly, I did not, nor do I ever choose flat rate shipping. It was changed somewhere between listing and sold. Just another scam
thriftyfiftyfifty
·3 weeks agoSure...so it happened in August as well with the same identical Shipping Cost. What happened there? Some kind of scam by whom? Fairly easy to monitor via Seller Hub if any of your Listings "are suddenly" Flat Rate. Seems blaming it on a "scam" is a cop-out honestly.
momtoabeautifuldaughter
·3 weeks agoIf eBay was going to change your listings they'd do it on all them......you messed up and whether you take responsibility or not that is what happened. I have been selling for over 23 years......over 50,000 transactions and never had a listing go flat rate spontaneously....LOL
