I sold a piece of artwork for $1850.00. Does anyone know how to get it insured for shipping? FedEx, UPS and eBay only insure for $1,000.

·11 months agoI would absolutely not ship something this expensive with USPS, they are way to unreliable. In any case assume that someone is going to try and break it and pack accordingly

·11 months agoTook a look at the artwork you sold. Congratulations. Hope everything goes smoothly. Wanted to add an additional thought.
Being a large work under glass, you may wish to talk to your buyer about removing the glass before shipping. Let a local frame shop disassemble it and place the glass between double thickness cardboard behind the print's current backing with a sheet of thick poster board on the front side, with both overlapping the outside edges of the frame, as that large sheet of glass breaking and damaging the print is your major concern while in transit.

·11 months agoEven though EBAY Ship Cover only insures up to $1,000 they pay out with "no questions asked" and you get use EBAY "discounted postal rate" label. I have had several experiences with Ship Cover (paid out, no questions asked, no hassle).
Yes, FedEx or UPS can insure "high value" items (insurance plan has "high deductibles"). I dealt with FedEx and UPS for years at a commercial business establishment (they are notorious for refusing to pay and weasel out every time (blame it on "poor packaging" or whatever).
EBAY requires that you pay extra for "signature request" for any packages over $750.
Why not go to the FedEx office and explain the situation to the clerk about using EBAY QR (discounted rate) and ask if you can "add on" insurance after the "label has been printed".

·11 months agoI think for you to insure for the entire value, You may have to use an actual trucking company,& just like jonathanbrightlight mentioned use signature confirmation of delivery & be sure you tell your customer the changes to the carrier, I think you may have been better off looking into this further before listing it, But that is now after the fact, Good Luck!

What I do and they are very careful.

Guess what? Been through all this ages ago when I had the identical concern. My suggestion is the best work around I've found and was suggested to me by a long time gallery owner who figured out the same as there is no perfect solution.
Don't even think of using FedEx Ground. Pack the item carefully as if you were sending it uninsured. If you don't know how to pack, take it to the FedEx Store and let them do it.

Be very careful with every step in that process. Make sure you ship Signature Required as well.
Edit: it looks like you specified that it would ship FedEx in the listing, so if you want to use the ShipCover insurance that is available for USPS shipments (that I linked above), make sure you communicate with your buyer about that change.
