Setting up an auction to have shipping charges change when it reaches a certain price
Greetings,
First of all, please direct me to a post or article if this has been answered before. So, in my initial, internet research I couldn't find the answer to my question which is: Can I set up an auction for an initial price and shipping and then when the price/bid reaches a certain amount, the shipping will change? For example, I have an initial set at a price of $0.99 and shipping at $1.00. Then, if the auction price goes to $25, the shipping will then go to $6.00 (for more secure and safe shipping). Also, I will note this in the auction itself about the possible shipping charge change.
Thanks in advance for the help.

A a buyer Ihave no problem with that as long as you the seller pay the extra $5.01........................

·4 months agoI used to specialize in Magic cards. I never once ran one at auction. They pretty much all have going rates and you will make more just slightly underpricing the cheapest one for condition than you ever will auctioning one.
Also, protip. If you have a card in that death zone of being worth between $20 and $30 then you can increase the amount of money you charge for the standard envelope shipping in order to keep the card price under $20. Of course if it does get lost or damaged the insurance will only pay out $20.

·4 months agoIf a card auction goes above $20 you can just send it in a stamped envelope. It won't get the tracking but MtG buyers are unlikely to make false did not receive claims (not recommended for Pokemon, Yugioh or One Piece cards...).
Quite frankly though unless you're selling the the hottest new chase cards or PSA 10 Pokemon cards, you're better off just listing with buy it now and setting your price appropriately. Then you get what you want for them and know what shipping you need to use ahead of time.

·4 months agoThis is a terrible idea. Imagine purchasing an item with the expectation of a particular price and once you get to the register that price changes. Shipping is not based on cost of item but weight and volume.

·4 months agoThe answer to your question is, of course, NO.
But have to ask, since you are selling for such low prices, are you making a lot of money, or are you hoping for volume sales?

·4 months agoThe seller is describing a scenario with an auction. A low starting bid is a reasonable and appropriate and works well with a lot of items. Despite what some around here to say – that you shouldn’t sell anything for under $20 – it is fine. And the OP has plenty of items that do very well – the small dollar stuff is really the minority of it. Even then, a lot of smart sellers and successful ones sell items that are just a handful of dollars.

·4 months agoNo, there's no mechanism in place for doing that. The Shipping charges are simply based on the package weight, dimensions, and choice of Shipping method. The price of the item itself is not involved (not directly, anyway; you can still offer Free Shipping and eat the postage yourself, though you still need to accurately determine the package details).
You can set up your listing as a BuyItNow or an auction, and pick your own price, but the Shipping cost is what it is. You can offer Calculated shipping in order to prevent overcharging nearby buyers or undercharging distant ones, but again that only succeeds when given accurate package weight and dimensions up front at listing time.

You need to either end your listings or revise them because you cannot do the following as per your listings:
"Every individual card (barring card thickness) priced between $2 - $20 will ship in a standard letter sized envelope with tracking for $0.49. Any card of value of $20 and above will ship in a bubble mailer for $5."
Listings show $.49 shipping and you cannot charge a penny more.

·4 months agoAs the seller, YOU are responsible for the safe and secure shipping and delivery to the buyer no matter what the price of the item.
And why would any buyer who pays more for an item also want to pay more for shipping when safe shipping is your responsibility?
Sheesh, as I was reading the OP, I thought your question was going to ask how to REDUCE the shipping cost if the price went to a certain level. How dumb of me!

·4 months agoI mean, just buy the additional shipping out of pocket and be glad it sold for more than the minimum.

·4 months agoHow much it costs to ship if sold for $1 or $500 should be the same, secure packaging has nothing to do with sale price?
ryry-jj
·4 months agoNope, that is something that is not available to do. Also, you can't note in the listing you will charge an additional amount on a greater sale amount. Shipping is based on what the item cost to ship, not what it sells for. So however you list with size, weight, & carrier, whatever that calculates to and is shown to the buyer, that is all you can charge

The fact that you could not find a way to do it was your answer.

·4 months agoNo, you can't do that.

·4 months agoThat isn't a thing.
The requirement to package and ship an item safely and securely is based on its fragility, not its bid price.
I used to sell costume jewelry here - I never skimped on shipping just because I didn't get the bids I expected. The item determines the shipping and if added insurance is needed, you provide that for your protection.
Not to mention - imagine a buyer bidding based on price + shipping only to have the price go up more than their bid because of such a thing. What is the intent behind this?

OP4 months agoThanks for the reply and answer, so I was trying to copy another listing that had done this. Where the auction would mention in both its description and shipping that the shipping would increase. So, with this increased shipping they could provide better protection for the item when it was shipped out.

That is in violation of eBay rules.
If I saw a clueless seller with that, I would hit the back button. Not going to mess with a seller like that.

You can't follow what others do here, because there are a lot of people playing fast and loose until they get caught.
Just charge the max rate for shipping from the get-go, including all the features you would add if the price gets high -- like insurance, signature, etc.
