Sir: I'm sorry about your experience, but I humbly reject your advice.  Sellers have many rights on eBay.  But to enjoy those rights you have to know what you are doing.

I have sold on eBay for 25 years and am a top rated plus seller.  I offer to pay for returns and will ship items the same day as they are ordered.

I sell in categories that appeal to educated, financially well-off buyers.  Selling junk on eBay more often than not will get you junk buyers.

I have made so much profit on eBay that I can afford the occasional loss.  I've not had a loss in more than 20 years, and it was a broken glass resulting from mishandling at the post office.

My average investment for an item is $3.  My average sale here for an item is $49.

And no, customer service no longer exists.  But if you understand how eBay works and make money here, you won't need them.  Regards.

On each Ebay page there is a link to contact Customer Service at the top of the page and again at the bottom of the page.

I would suggest that you contact Ebay for Business on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter for the better trained CSRs.

Here are your options for contacting Ebay Customer Service. Please be aware that for social media CS, you send them a Private Message and briefly explain what your problem or issue is. Feel free to leave your Name, address, phone number and/or your email address in this message. It is private and secure and it may help to speed up the response for you.

    https://twitter.com/askebay

    https://www.facebook.com/ebay

    https://www.instagram.com/ebayforsellers/

Your options will be on the left. If you use the link below you can only get to the Automated Assistant or Chat box type AGENT in the box and hit enter. You will then get more options. Not all options are available 24/7. It will depend on staffing available. So sometimes you can request a call back and sometimes you can't. Sometimes you have the Chat option available and other times it won't me. If it is important to you to use one of those options, just try back later.

If you use a cell phone or other mobile device, you may need to turn off your Spam filter so that Ebay can call you.

If you are a seller outside of the US or Canada, you will need to use the Chat Option.

AI response?  Is that the extent of your imagination? ðŸ˜„

Your comment sounds like sour grapes.

Read this to learn about how I got started on eBay and have never invested a single penny of my own money in my eBay endeavor.

    https://community.ebay.com/t5/Selling/How-does-one-sell-on-eBay-and-make-a-profit/m-p/34524067/highlight/true#M2415938

And this to learn about my cost to earnings ratios:

    https://community.ebay.com/t5/Selling/1-and-2-Dollar-sellers/m-p/34555879/highlight/true#M2424966

There are plenty of smart people in the world; maybe you've not met many.

I deal with a specific class of eBay buyers.  I don't sell junk, have a perfect feedback score (which contrary to popular belief matters enormously to those who purchase from me), and do everything I can to maintain my top rated plus status.

I don't get ripped off, scammed, or fooled.  In part because I sell quality merchandise to affluent buyers; in part because I know how to recognize a miscreant from their messages to me and block them on the spot.  I also never, ever sell cameras, stamps, coins, or electronics -- the sustenance of criminals.

I also tell customers that they can expect to pay a little more for shipping because I overpack delicate merchandise to make sure it does not get broken.  My customers don't mind.

Let me know if you have any questions.

eBay has been very, very good to me.  Not that I need the money; for me its a hobby.

I recommend Top Rated plus status.  If you can qualify.

If you can qualify?? for top-rated status? hahaha

Wow - Have you sold millions of $$ worth of items here? - You better had before you start fluffing your feathers and clucking for a dance off...

No not really.  It is another new seller that didn't know how to handle a situation they found themselves in and blames Ebay because it didn't turn out well for the seller.

Do you want to know how bad Ebay is , here is a story.

Last year on November I sold item Nikon NIKKOR 105mm f/2.8 for 100 USD pluse shipment and tax 120 total.

A few days later I received a message from the buyer complaining about the lens, he said it was not working. He asked me to return the product, I didn't mind, he had a 14 day return period anyway. Lately I have received a message from Ebay that the buyer has started a refund dispute against me.

I have sent a message to Ebay that I have not refused the return and I am willing to exept return .
A couple of months later I got an email saying I had to refund the buyer 133 USD becouse  dispute was found in the buyer's favour. I also had to pay 20 USD dispute charge.

But the most interesting part was I did not get lens back, so buyer kept lens and got his money back.

After that incident, I stopped seeing my gear, except for one lens that I didn't think anyone would buy. Nikon 18-300.,
I didn't want to sell it on Ebay, but it was too late, the buyer had already paid. I sent the lens to the customer, same story, but this time at least I got the lens back, but I lost 60 USD on returns.
I also want to say there is nothing wrong with lens, it works fine.

Warning to sellers and anyone who thinking to start selling on Ebay. I dont want people to get to the same troble as me becouse Ebay do not care about sellers at all.

This is NOT an eBay problem it is a problem with the current federal laws that cover CC chargebacks. The laws are over 50 years old and written at a time when ecommerce wasn't even on most peoples radar. The chargeback problem, also known as friendly fraud, has grown into a multi-billion dollar issue and the problem is NOT unique to eBay or ecommerce.

I will agree there are things that eBay could do to help stem the growth but that would require resources which would eat into the bottom line. CC companies do monitor card holders as well as merchants for abuse or excessive chargeback activity and can terminate a cardholders account or revoke a merchants ability to utilize their card(s) as a form of payment.

The iffy seller protection is the Chargeback. If that were regulated by the govt better there would be much less stress selling on here. This is your greatest threat on here.

To me without having all the details, what I'm getting from the few details you did give us is as follows.

The buyer emailed you that there was a problem.  You told them it was OK to return the item.  Then it appears you didn't give the buyer any instructions on how to accomplish this or give them a return shipping label.  This is what caused your current day mess.  You could have / should have taken care of this back then.  It appears you left it in the hands of your buyer and you should have worked directly with them on getting the item returned to you.

    https://www.ebay.com/help/selling/managing-returns-refunds/handle-return-request-seller?id=4115#

A few months later the buyer's options under the Money Back Guarantee ran out a very long time ago, so they went to their Credit Card and filed a dispute called a Chargeback.

Ebay notified you that the buyer filed the Chargeback.  These can be very hard to battle and Ebay does NOT have any control over how the Credit Card Company decides these cases.  What happened to you is typical of the Credit Card Companies.  They rule for their buyer.  They allow the buyer to keep the item and get a full refund.  Again NOT eBAY'S FAULT.

If you had of handled this back when the buyer first brought the issue to your attention, the chargeback would not have happened nor would have the additional $20 charge for losing the Chargeback.

It is so important to know how to handle a buyer that is telling you there is an issue and they want to return the item.  But clearly you did not understand the process and that is why it ended up the way it did.

I'm really sorry you went through this.  But you are blaming Ebay and it is not Ebay's fault.  Sellers DO have rights on the site, but it is up to the seller to KNOW what they are.  This was an avoidable situation.  ðŸ˜

Buyer has 14 days return policy, do I have to pack package for him. After all this do you still  think I will sell anything on Ebay.

You are correct, on Camera's you can have a 14 day policy.

    @olvik5762

The return policies options are as follows.

    1. No Returns
    2. 30 day returns w/ buyer pays shipping
    3. 60 day returns w/ buyer pays shipping
    4. 30 day returns w/ seller pays shipping, AKA Free Returns
    5. 60 day returns w/ seller pays shipping. AKA Free Returns
    6. 14 Day returns in certain categories

With option number 1, No Returns the seller can completely deny taking a return for a Buyer's Remorse Return Request.  Or if they want to, they can accept the return and have the buyer pay the return shipping.  If the seller so chooses, they can withhold the original shipping if it was separately stated on the listing [not free shipping] when it is time to refund the buyer.

On options 2 & 3 the buyer is responsible for the return shipping on a Buyer's Remorse Return.  Plus, if the seller so chooses, they can withhold the original shipping if it was separately stated on the listing [not free shipping] when it is time to refund the buyer. As of October 1st 2019, sellers that are TRS have some additional protections as well as they can issue partial refunds if they use options 4 or 5 as their return policy.

On options 4 & 5 above, they are also known as Free Returns.  If a seller that has either of those policies, they will pay the return shipping even on a buyer's remorse return.  A seller can withhold the original shipping value from the refund if the shipping was separately stated in the listing [not free shipping].  Also, Seller’s offering options 4 or 5 have the ability to do partial refunds in certain cases if the item arrives back damaged, missing something or in a condition less than what it was sent to the buyer in, see the policy for more details, the link is below.  In the cases where a deduction in the refund is taken due to damage or other authorized reasons for a partial refund, Ebay will protect the seller from negative or neutral feedback.

ALL OPTIONS [1, 2, 3, 4 and 5] are required to process SNAD claims without exception.  Even if they are improperly filed and should have been a Buyer’s Remorse claim.

All return policies by sellers must meet or exceed what is stated in the Money Back Guarantee Policy!

14 day return policies are allowed in certain categories: Jewelry & Watches, Collectibles & Art, Cameras & Photo and Medical, Mobility & Disability Equipment.

For those with Free Return and/or TRS members with 30 day return policies, there are some added protection benefits, one of which is the ability to do a discounted refund under certain conditions.

I'm sorry this happened to you @olvik5762 and sorry you didn't understand how to have the buyer open a return request.

However the question I have is at what point did that buyer leave feedback for you? I ask because the feedback states, "Excellent lens, very clean, like new condition, fast shipping, well packed - Great Seller!!!"

I agree, you shouldn't sell on eBay especially if you don't know what you're doing and don't follow thru with helping a customer who was unhappy with their purchase.

Sorry for your disappointment.  My suggestion is to take the time to learn the ropes here on eBay instead rushing into it like a bull in a china shop.  I have the exact same lens you sold & got it for less than $100 brand new.  You have a lot to learn and coming here to discourage others from selling on eBay isn't going to solve your problems, as most will just by pass your negative advice.  Sorry.

I am sorry to hear you have been having a problematic time here on Ebay.  I see you have one current sale from late May.  Did something go wrong with that transaction?  If so, give us the details we may be able to help you.

Sometimes for new and/or infrequent sellers they are not aware of the rules that can help them.  Too often they assume they don't exist and that simply isn't always true.

Why not give us a chance and see if we can help you or show you some things that can help you.  We would be happy to try if you would take the time to give us some details of what has caused you so much frustration.  Just remember, we are here to help.

There is a lot to learn before you list any item on an internet marketplace.

If you do not learn it, you will lose money.

Customer service cannot forgive you for your mistakes, you pay the price for thinking it is going to be easy.

Can you educate us more about merit of 'free returns,'  I'm seeing all the replies in here about the need.   Are  scammers looking for people who don't offer that?  Did eBay simply browbeat everyone into doing this?  I understand both arguments, it seems to be an extension from 30-day returns in the first place (which evolved into 'you're going to accept them whether you like it or not.'  Like 'no return,' I can see sellers not taking back electronics or software.  External etailers often have that policy, but ebay is forcing everyone, so one can now buy new appliance part, try it out, if it doesn't work, not only return it, but get shipping label and full refund provided?  Seems crazy.  I think I'm going to start shopping instead of selling.  And since we know ebay doesn't support sellers, when that appliance part is returned damaged inside torn up boxing, what is the recourse?

" Did eBay simply browbeat everyone into doing this?"

Actually, the market and entitled buyers that have been fed with entitlements by Amazon and other sites have forced it on many sellers.

I have been on here for over 20 years and get very few returns so it is a fairly low risk 'feature' that people look for.

You just have to determine the percentage of items that you expect to have returns (and theft) on and add the return/refund/theft costs into your pricing.  Every buyer pays for those that take advantage of everything they can get away with.

Don't leave us hanging. If you are going to complain, you might as well give us all the juicy details.

Let me take a wild guess at what happened.

    1. Did a buyer open a Item Not Received case where you failed to properly respond to the case and upload the tracking number thus Ebay had to step in and force a refund from your account?

    2. Did the buyer open up a Item Not As Described Case where you failed to properly respond to the case and issue the buyer a prepaid return label thus Ebay had to step in and force a refund from your account?

    3. Did the buyer send back a rock, broken item, different item or empty box?

If its option 3 you have deepest sympathies

Copy that - We have always tried to be proactive in business decisions - When Promoted Listings started ramping up, after having been dealt the $#i++4 end of a couple MBG cases, it was easy to see where things could quickly progress - We had no desire to get caught up on multiple fronts, so we slowly implemented our exit strategy and now no longer list here...

We would consider listing here again, but they would need to get rid of the MBG.. We can deal with fees since we could likely get top dollar for some of our items selling them here...only problem is, we are 100% unwilling to list pricey items that are 100% at risk for loss through buyer fraud... Been there done that and its THE MAIN reason we do not currently list on this site...

If you have MBG cases, maybe what your selling is defective.  Ever consider that?

Huh? What does being able to afford an occasional loss have to do with knowing how to run a Business - A better business model would seek out ways to reduce their losses, which is exactly what we did - We have the business acumen to continue our businesses where we rid ourselves of those occasional losses and the distrust that comes with several scams - And were not talking the loss of chump change like your $49 avg sale - We found thievery was, and likely still is  getting worse on a monthly basis - And then the company schemes up having to dig deeper to pay for Promoted Listings while services were/are degrading? Nah... Half of the decision to not do business here was a matter of principle... The other half was keeping more money in our pocket with less stress, work and worry...

But hey - go hog wild here by all means... who am I to tell you how to run a business when you have 20 years of selling here without a loss...cough* Bu11$#it cough*

It is true that eBay's customer service tends to favor buyers over sellers.

I sold a nail polish item worth $50. After 25 days, the customer claimed they didn't recognize the transaction, despite the item being delivered. eBay refunded the money from my payout. I also question why eBay charges a transaction fee when it's not the seller's fault if someone uses another person's card. This seems to be a flaw in the platform's security.

That type of reason means it was a Chargeback not a claim filed through Ebay.  You should appeal this as Ebay should have had you covered when the buyer says they didn't recognize the transaction.

Ebay should have sent enough info to the buyer's credit card company to support what the charge was for.  So file an appeal.
