Seller Defect
eBay showed two of my items were available when they were already sold. Now I have a below standard on my seller account. How do I get this correct before they close my account? I should have put buyer request cancellation but I didn't know so I put out of stock. This was an error of eBay and not mine so I do not think I should be flagged below standards because of this. Please help!!!

·4 months agoI will never suggest you break any rules. However the ebay terms and conditions are ultimately just a contract with clear terms for breaches, and for some reason cancelling for out of stock is worse than anything else you can do.
The reality from the people in my private seller chat group is that you never, ever, ever, cancel for being out of stock. Anything else you can do is better in the eyes of ebay.
As to how to dig out of below standard. Buy yourself a lot of about 50 nice shiny pokemon cards (make sure they are all holo cards) for a few bucks from someone. Then list a few of them every day for 99 cents free shipping. Ship them standard envelope. You will lose money on every sale, but it will be enough to dig you out of below-standard in time for your next evaluation.
You can substitute the pokemon cards with any other standard envelope item. Go buy a lot of 50 iron on patches on amazon, sell those $1 free ship standard envelope instead. The important part is that you hit that 99 cent shipped price point so people who buy such things buy them from you.

·4 months agoMany people seem to blame eBay when it is simply misunderstanding how quantities work with relisting.
The relisting will use the quantity of ALL the items sold through that listing. For example: if you create a listing with qty 2 and relist it after they sell the relisting will be qty 2, however: if you start that listing, sell 1 and edit qty back to 2 to add another, when you relist it the relisting will be qty 3.
Always check the quantity when relisting.

·4 months agoeBay does make mistakes. It's just a computer site and has mistakes just like people. They need to have their programmers look at their software! They are not perfect!

eBay has me in one heck of an expensive mess right now due to adding Compatibilities to my listings. And that's something I've never used, nor enabled.

·4 months agoEbay listing an item as "available" after it's been sold does happen.
I sold a book from a book drop list. A few weeks later it ended. I decided to relist the drop-list and, because I was adding about a dozen more, it I figured it would be "Similar."
Well... a week later someone ordered two books. One was the one I had sold. It turns out that "similar" just copied the original listing and you make all the changes. "Relist" would have copied the ended ad without the sold items. So, I got dinged for listing an item I didn't have.
So... I explained to the buyer what happened and offered a great deal on the other book. She said to just cancel the whole thing. I did and checked off "... at buyer's request." I got a note from Ebay saying it was cancelled because I listed an item I didn't have... not the customers request! I guess...

When an item is not in your hands and you have it listed on Ebay and need to cancel an order you must select "Out of Stock." Yes the buyer disputed and Ebay changed it from "Buyer Requested" to "Out of Stock." You will get a defect. The buyer didn't request this cancellation you had more available than you have in hand which is considered by Ebay an error on your part.

OP4 months agoNot helpful! This situation has happened twice. Even other people on the FB eBay group, others have had the same thing happen!!! eBay does have glitches and occasional problems!

eBay didn't do this.

·4 months agoI would recommend listing some cheaper items perhaps in order to make a few quick sales. This will help a bit with your overall numbers. Out of stocks truly are the worst defects and they hang around for a year.
I would very much recommend that you check all the items you have listed and make sure you have them.
Literally I have to do an inventory of items at least once a year. And each month I do spot checks on certain bins, containers, boxes, bags etc.....
I also check each month end by sorting items alphabetically and then looking for duplicates. Sometimes the duplicates are my fault but I have seen some over the years that cannot be explained.
In the end you can succeed just move forward, keep listing, find items for quick sale and don't have anymore OOS issues.

How did you determine that this "was an error of eBay" and not your mistake? I'm asking because I have never had anything like this happen.

·4 months agoActually, after I saw your listing that had two available, I did the same thing one time. I used the "sell similar" feature from a listing that had a quantity of two available, didn't notice it when I listed my item. When the second one sold and I didn't have it available, and I couldn't figure it out, this very helpful board showed me the error of my ways.

OP4 months agoBecause I had just sold the item and someone purchased it again! I always delete original listings if I relist it or list similar. I'm not stupid! Somehow it sold again.

The first step to getting a spotless record on your selling account is to take some PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY and learn from your mistakes.

You used the correct reason for not having the items.
Had you lied and used the buyer requested as your scape goat you could be reported.
Can you prove eBay did this and not you?
Or is it just that you dont think you did it so it has to be eBay?
At this point your option is to be below standard and get extra fees added on to your sales OR
sell some items cheap and maybe even at a loss to get your sales numbers up.
There is nothing CS can do to help.
