Seller cancellation due to accidental pricing error
Summary: marinastylecollective accidentally mispriced an item, leading to the buyer purchasing it at an incorrect lower price. They sought advice on how to cancel the order without incurring a seller defect. Participants suggested using 'out of stock' as the reason, which would result in a defect, or shipping the item and taking a financial loss. Suggestions also included absorbing the loss by adjusting prices on other listings. Participants sympathized, sharing similar experiences, emphasizing the need for caution with pricing.
Hi, I’m a seller and I accidentally entered the wrong price on a listing. The item was listed for $6.65 instead of $66.5, and the buyer completed the purchase before I noticed the mistake. The item has not been shipped.
When I try to cancel the order, the only reasons available are “Out of stock or damaged,” “Buyer asked to cancel,” and “Problem with buyer’s address.” None of these accurately describes the situation.
What is the correct way to cancel an order because of an accidental pricing/listing error? I do not want to select an inaccurate cancellation reason or unnecessarily receive a seller defect.
Thank you for your help.
PS. Thank you, everyone, for all your advice and suggestions. I decided to go ahead and ship the item to the buyer. The pricing mistake was mine, and it happened because I wasn’t paying close enough attention. I know that when I’m a buyer, I appreciate when a seller honors a purchase, so I felt this was the right thing for me to do. Lesson learned — I’ll definitely double-check my prices more carefully from now on!

·1 week agoYou are "out of stock" as you have no item available that you want to sell for $6.69.
If you have not already done so, if you choose to cancel you should message the buyer to apologize for your mistake.

·1 week agoIf you are not going to ship it then it is correct to use out of stock.

·1 week agoIf ship you will still get 10% of your desired price (less fees) which will be less than many seller errors lose when they make other common mistakes.
Most mistakes you make on Ebay are irreversible. Or reversible at a cost, like bringing your seller account to Below Standard Seller Level which does not take all that many cancellation for a seller selling at your or my rate of sales.

·1 week agoChoose damaged/out of stock and take the defect OR ship the item and own up to your mistake.

·1 week agoWhat do you have in it? Ship it - increase the price of your other items by dividing the loss across all of your listings to make up the loss slowly. Not the end of the world.

·1 week ago@marinastylecollective I agree with @reallynicestamps . I understand you made an honest mistake. I did this once too, it is likely that most experiences sellers did this somewhere along the line. Still it was my mistake, I owned it and I shipped the item to the buyer even though it hurt a bit financially. I felt that was the right thing to do.
Keep in mind that filing a Cancellation for being OOS, is your option of the reasons available, if this is the route you go, but it is not risk free when you do this. Ebay may not refund your selling fees. You get a defect on your Seller Dashboard and you leave yourself open to a negative feedback from the buyer.
Completely your choice. I hope everything turns out well for you and your buyer.

·1 week agoWe've all done and sympathize. But not every transaction will go perfectly.
Personally, I would ship and take the loss, because the Defect will likely be more expensive in the long run.

·1 week agoYou have only two choices:
Out Of Stock, and take a seller defect that will last a year, or ship the item and take a 90% loss.
Neither options are desirable, but I bet you'll be double-checking your listing price from now on, huh?
Cheers, Duffy

·1 week agoYou use 'out of stock'. You will receive a seller level defect for it.

·1 week agoThere’s no option to cancel for pricing errors, so I’d choose damaged or out of stock.
If eBay offered a way to cancel without consequences, people would likely take advantage of it.
