Sales down search engine sucks and I can't pay promo fees....... the end of eBay?
Summary: neocurio expressed frustration over declining sales on eBay and a reluctance to pay promotional fees, opting instead to sell through an antique mall booth. Several participants provided feedback and suggestions, including reconsidering product selection, pricing, and marketing strategies. Discussion expanded to include varying views on the effectiveness of eBay's search engine, the use of all caps in listings, and promotional listings. Additionally, a debate emerged about eBay's practices compared to competitors, with some focusing on the importance of adapting to changing market demands and optimizing listing strategies. Overall, participants exchanged insights on how to navigate eBay's evolving platform and sales challenges.
Sales down and I am not going to pay promotional fees. I am not sure why eBay doesn't want me to make a sale. went and got shelf space at an Antique mall booth, doing markets and selling other places now. They are losing my business because their search engine sucks or I am not paying promo fees not sure what it is but it keeps getting worse. Pretty soon if it keeps up this pace I will go to no store and sell mostly other places. Pretty sad because I have been faithful seller for a long time.

·3 weeks agoFor what little it's worth most antique malls are a waste of time because shopper traffic is minute compared to ebay and the rent on spaces per sq foot is high plus ancillary charges like for people using credit cards. As for your listings you're trying to sell a lot of $6 items that make next to nothing and some of your prices on older items are imo unrealistic. The Chase cigarette holder, which is in really rough shape, that you are trying to sell for $80 has no chance of selling. Chase still sells but unlike 20 years ago the condition needs to be superb or the piece needs to be unique and associated with one of their more famous designers. If you were in an antique mall the piece, in that condition, would fetch $10-20 at best. Best of luck.

·3 weeks agoIm more curious as to what is the cost break down on the shelf space you are renting at the antique mall? I've looked at those I nthe past and the real savings is only in no shipping cost/effort. But fees and store % is typically very high for the overall market exposure. Nothing at all wrong with doing both markets if you can cover the costs.
With all listing, someone is at the top and someone is at the bottom, if other sellers are paying to be at the top, you need to get in that game or change your ebay game to where you don't have to pay to play. What worked yesterday, may not work today...or even tomorrow.
Something interesting to factor in...
in 2010, eBay had about 3 million sellers with 90 million buyers...today 18 million sellers chasing only 135 million buyers...6X more sellers chasing just 48% more buyers...assuming my number s are correct, but the jist is far far far more competition and buyers have many more options
neocurio
OP3 weeks agoWell if your numbers are correct that explains a lot. I do agree with changing up my eBay game which is exactly why I posted here. Get the various points of view. The antique mall is great because I split the space with someone else, makes it that much more profitable. I usually rotate my product from eBay to there. I am trying to be open and flexible to change & changing! I appreciate your comments Thx for sharing. Enjoy your Sunday, Kind Regards
ryry-jj
·3 weeks agoAgree....you need to be flexible...even in the antique mall. If you don't have options, then too often we believe our only option on eBay is to lower prices. But on eBay, try a promo item or two, it only costs you if it sells and it may bring buyers to your other items. Plus add back the cost in the item. For all you know it isnt the price that draws the sale, its just the buyer doesn't find your item to buy even at a higher cost. No idea if people are like me or not, but I never search past the first page, everything beyond the first page is invisible to me.
Don't forget about free promotions too on social media to draw buyers to your eBay or mall items. Pop up sales are great...and poeple bring their own boxes and packing materials lol
neocurio
OP3 weeks agoThanks for that point of view!! I do social media need to hone it in better though.

·Sep 12, 2026 at 11:17 PMI'm not a big fan of that one lowercase letter in some of your titles.
You putting your username/store name in the title is a total waste in my opinion ... no matter how much you like it.
neocurio
OP3 weeks ago · EditedThank you for your input. I have started switching my titles as listening to options here and educating myself more on search metrics.
shire123
·3 weeks ago@neocurio You don't need your store name in the title. When a buyer clicks on your item a link to your store will appear under your user name on the listing. The link says "seller's other items".

OP3 weeks ago · EditedYes after hearing all this feedback that I am so grateful for I am making changes. When I first started eBay it was wide open. I had a system of making listings that for me could create the most in the least amount of time. My way of doing things isn't working like it used to. Also eBay has been slowly been making things more structured and my free spirit artist musician break the rules personality is now trying to adapt and fit in to the mold 🤪

·Sep 12, 2026 at 10:28 PMI saw your update about changing the titles and getting some views back. I actually clicked through to one of your listings out of curiosity and I think you might be onto something. One thing I noticed is you’re using some of the title space for your store name. I’d probably swap that out for a couple more words buyers might actually search for. Same with the “see listing & pics” part — putting the actual condition/details there might help too. Just a couple things I noticed looking through it, hope it helps.

·3 weeks agoYes and no.
I found using PL increased my Views, which in turn increased my sales.
But the PL items actually had a lower sales rate than the non_PL items.
It seems that PL brought in eyeballs which then browsed in my Store and bought other stuff instead.
Anecdote is not data.
I only use PL at the minimum 2% only if sold. So my asking price might be slightly increased to cover that extra cost. But with at its highest 10% of items PL, that 2% is spread all sales, most of which are not PL.
The math is complicated.
At the moment less than 1% of my listings are PL.

OPSep 12, 2026 at 7:20 PMSo I did spend time yesterday changing my auction titles to an upper/ lower case mix. I will say almost every listing has a view and that wasn't the case the last month or so. Also the idea of selling similar so the listing will really translate as new you must have 2 windows open so you can mark the items in each tab so after you list/ schedule you then delete the original so you don't end up with double listings. I hope I am making sense. Thanks to all who helped!!!!!

·Sep 12, 2026 at 12:02 PMYou sell some of the same kinds of things I do, i.e. little booklets and small paper goods, small toys, etc.
We also have booths in an antique mall. I have a table on which I have "beer flat boxes" that I put these small, less expensive items in (always less than $10.00), and it is surprising how many of them sell. I keep five or six flats of little booklets and paper goods, one of photographs, one of inexpensive patches, one of bumper stickers, and whatever else inexpensive "little things" I come across that I don't want to list on eBay. (Never things like tokens or anything like that.) Customers go through those boxes and sometimes buy one or two things and sometimes a whole stack. When I first started doing this, I was afraid things would get torn up but they haven't (sometimes I put things in sleeves or bags, but mostly not), or stolen, but that hasn't been an issue either.
neocurio
OPSep 12, 2026 at 7:09 PMI love that idea of the flats. Yes more and more considering talking the low end items off I will do as you are good advice! Thank you, enjoy the week-end! Kind Regards
pickapaper
·Sep 12, 2026 at 9:03 PM@neocurio Actually, I got the idea of those paper goods flats from another dealer in the mall. But that's about all he dealt in, paper goods and books and records and I guess he wasn't making enough profit because he moved out. One problem with his flats was he put them on shelves so they were hard to look through. I have mine on a table where it is easy to look through the boxes. And we do sell a wide variety of things so we are not depending on the flats to "pay the rent"; it's just some very nice extra sales. Those $1 and $2 and $3 items add up.
I know that things sell differently in different parts of the country and if you try it, it will be interesting to know how this works for you.

·3 weeks agoOn the other hand, USPS is pretty good at actually delivering the mail, and eBay does not require tracking.
Yes, if there is a Claim, the seller who did not use tracking will lose, but how many false Claims are you likely to get on a $10 item?
I even send purchases that are going to the USA via eIS without tracking if they are inexpensive, weigh less than 500gr,and are less than 2cmthick, because Canada Post will deliver and then eIS adds their own tracking.
Keeps my expenses down and profit up.

·3 weeks agoMost of the problems people have with ESE come down to packing and envelopes being too rigid. eBay does a terrible job of explaining this to new sellers, I normally don't criticize eBay here but this is something they really need to address, users here could write far better directions than what they have on the ESE page but I digress...
They can only be scanned when they go through letter sorting machines, the regular scanners can't do anything with them as they are on 2 different systems.
neocurio
OP3 weeks agoWell I was using the rigid ones for trading cards and they like and you needed the rigid envelopes.
neocurio
OPSep 12, 2026 at 3:41 AMAll right I am having to catch up here. I was doing standard envelope but what started happening was (as there is no tracking number or scan) people started opening claims when they hadn't received their item by the time they thought they should and I would have to refund them (ebay forced me to then the item would be delivered and I had no way to reclaim my money or the item. So after that happening a number of times I switched to the other calculated. I do agree with what you are saying and have been making more lot listings and am thinking about removing all the small stuff just putting it in the antique mall.
fm2000
·3 weeks agoWere your envelopes properly flexible? Did you do the flex test on them? If none never got scans, they didn't go through the sorting machines because they were not flexible enough. Top loaders often cause this. eBay does a poor job of explaining how to use ESE, lots fall into this trap when they first start using ESE.
Like One Foot Flipper said, your items that can go ESE won't sell at today's patently obscene GA rates, people will just buy from your competitors that do. (Remember, postage for small lightweight items has almost doubled at the same time time half the country has gotten poorer and now has less disposable income, ESE may be all some of your customers can afford). ESE is will work, if used properly, you don't have to give up on it.

·Sep 11, 2026 at 9:46 PMI have been an ebay seller for 26 years. Ebay has been increasing fees and taking away things that your store monthly/yearly store payment use to cover. That monthly charge for a store use to cover them paying for google ads now they want you to pay for it. I think they are blind to what they are doing to their selves. Ever sale is charged a commission fee around 15% but if a seller sales decrease because they don't want to pay for those ads the seller doesn't make a sale and they lose out on that 15% commission. 2nd if a seller does pay for the ads they have to increase their price which makes them a higher price than the same seller on Amazon or Walmart which means no sale no ebay commissions. The reason ebay is surviving at all is that "make a cent and be happy Chinese sellers".
The one thing good about ebay unlike Amazon & Walmart is returns. Our return rate on ebay is less than 1 percent because ebay dose hold the buyer accountable for their mistakes unlike Amazon & Walmart (7% return rate) and if they change their mind they pay the return shipping which now is more than the product but on the other hand our Amazon sales are up 12% and Walmart 42% Ebay is down 48%. Ebay needs to wake up before they kill the golden goose!!!!

·Sep 11, 2026 at 9:03 PMNone of your listings strike as anything I could predict how long it would take before a buyer would appear.
Many of them are within my past experience.
I have many items listed which I could not make that prediction for.
My solution to meet my goals, is to have many more items listed than you do.
Obviously, that is governed by what I can afford to have in inventory, what I can acquire and what I can store.
I think that as well as revisiting what is more likely to sell to today's buyers you need to consider having a larger number of listings.
For any items, there are not enough visitors to Ebay looking for what we sell in any given month. Ebay is not the Ebay which was part of people's nightly entertainment.

·Sep 11, 2026 at 7:29 PMHi there, just my two cents on this issue. You have sold a lot of items over the years, way more than I. We all hit a slump at some time or another. Usually when the slump happens I do some things I was going to suggest that maybe if you did them it would help your visibility. Maybe you already do these things. My sales are down too but I do have some.
Perhaps get rid of the capital letters in your title. I have no proof or anything but it was rumored that capital letters in titles messed with the algorithm.
Perhaps change your titles on things if they don't sell in a year (or whatever period you choose.)
Perhaps change the first photo around so that there is a different main photo.
Perhaps do an end and sell similar to update the listings give them a fresh date if you don't do this already.
I wish you success wherever you land. Hopefully you just had a bad moment and will stay here.

·3 weeks ago@neocurio Just to clarify, all caps generally translate as screaming, not spam. If a person posts a thread or reply here in all caps, they promptly are told to take their caps lock off. But o use all caps or a mixture of lower and upper case in a listing title is not spam.
I noticed that you are now combining upper and lower in the same word; that is very hard to read. I use a mix of upper and lower words in a title, i.e. (using one of yours and altering it a bit) "1931 AMERICAN TRAPPER Magazine & BOBCAT TRAPPING Booklet Vintage neocurio".
