I recently sold a ring on eBay that I purchased from a seller on eBay in 2021. The original description stated the ring was a 6 carat diamond ring, my buyer asked the question as to where the description originated and all I could say was from the original seller. I decided to have the ring appraised by a local jeweler reputable in the town I live in. The ring came back as 1.26 carats of diamonds thus I changed the listing description and the ring was purchased. I got the ring back from the Authenticator indicating that they were returning the item because it was found to be significantly different from the listing description and if you scan their little QR code, it mentioned carat wait. This is a designer ring and on their website their description indicates it’s a 2.62 carat diamond ring of course I can’t get any information from anyone at eBay to help me figure this out and what to do next I have notified the buyer and I guess at this point I will just credit back the purchase price! And then they say relist it well how am I supposed to relist it if I don’t know what’s wrong with a description! So annoying! I guess we’re all crooks in their eyes, but they certainly take their money when you sell an item!

I sold a vintage gold mining pin to a great customer. eBay required it to go through their authenticator service. The authenticator stated it was "at least 14k". Are you serious? I have been in the biz for over 50 years and have never seen where an appraisal would say at least 14k or such. If using an XRF it would give you a definitive gold analysis. Only an acid test would ballpark it at least 14k. And no authenticator service should be performing an acid test on anything. In the end, I lost a ton of money by losing a great customer because he became as frustrated with eBay and their authenticator service as I did. In the future, if eBay marks any of my listings "authentic", meaning it will have to go through their authenticator, I will end and relist. I have had 100% FB for over 27 years. My FB speaks for how I handle my customers.

You could have had the ring appraised when you bought it, and returned it. You're blaming ebay for your lack of due diligence. Why not take some personal responsibility?

·1 week agoThe difference in the value of a 3-5 ctw diamond can be huge.....not only because of the size, but condition (flawed/unflawed). To sell a ring for $5000, you certainly need a formal appraisal by a jeweler.
Value of a similar ring on a website is no guarantee that the ring you have is the same value.

·1 week agoThey are getting ridiculous on their authentication. I’m ready to move my store to some other site. It’s happening way too much. It passes authentication, but it’s one point difference in gold then what it is marked.This has happened several times to me. I’ve been selling since 2000. This is utterly ridiculous.

·4 months agoMaybe go 'out of the box'....authenticity doesn't always work from eBay.
Heck, if you are going to a jeweler to get it appraised...do they have some sort of paper saying what it is and photo that in the item for auction.
You don't need authentication if it is a .99 auction(I think).
Imagine all the watchers you would get and buyers bidding on the item and looking at other items for sale.
And that negative feedback given was so unfair..and will not hurt your business.
