Reverse throttling.
I normally sell 1-2 items a day.
Today I had 7 orders.
You don't just go from 1 or 2 orders a day to 7 orders.
It's not normal.
It's like somebody turned ON a switch.
I believe ebay is playing tricks and reverse throttling me.
I'm going to contact ebay and ask them what's going on.

·3 years agoMaybe, I've never heard of reverse throttling, inverse, I've heard of inverse throttling. But, thats just too complicated.
More than likely, Mr. Jaime read all of your posts glorifying Ebay and decided to reward you. Its called the cheerleader package. Just kidding...

OP3 years agoI guess all that cheerleading paid off. 😉

·3 years agoIt was just your turn today. A couple days ago on another account I sold 3 items. That never happens.

·3 years agoI wish my sales would get an uptick. Tried a yard sale from 8 am to 2 pm and had 8 people show up and only 2 bought something. Total income was $13.00. That's just over $2.00 an hour.
Somewhere out there someone must have put a curse on me.ðŸ˜

·3 years agoMy first yard sale, back in April, was the best one I ever had. Almost $800. The 2nd was below average at $200. Like yours, my 3rd one was horrible. 2 people. $20. 1 was a friend who drove by & saw me outside. Other was a guy who happened to come out of my building. No one else even showed up to look. This was beside a busy street where cars were lined up for red lights.
Trying to understand the purpose of posts that are added merely to laugh in the face of sellers who are trying to rely on an income through eBay & find it difficult to do so under eBay's thumb.

·3 years agoI think this board deserves a laugh now and then.Away from all the 'scammers', 'throttling' 'shadow banning', etc.A little sense of humor gets us thru a lot of things that life throws at us.Keeps things in perspective.

·3 years ago@inhawaii's experience shows we can never trust eBay. Turn your back and bam, in comes a ton of sales, and you'll end up getting more tomorrow. And then they keep sending your money. They SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

·3 years agoI got reverse throttled too! Made so much money, it was obscene! How dare eBay do that!
I am so outraged, I will be calling Saul!
LOL Anyways, it seems some folks took your post seriously 🤦â€
Next time, use “j/k†or state the obvious in a “p.s.†so you don’t get a wall of text by someone clueless.

Although I quite enjoyed the guy with the dissertation on algorithms.
Still useful info, no matter how often repeated.

·3 years agoI need some of that. Seems like sells slowed to almost to a halt after we had to have a negative feedback removed due to someone complaining about us using USPS. Hopefully it's a coincidence.

You are again failing to use your sarcasm emoji.
You amuse those of us that know you but causing others to go into dissertations to explain the reasoning causing your nonexistent problem. 😂

·3 years agothey are throttling (or shadow banning) me to give you those extra sales. I am on "time away" and have not had any sales. I nearly always have buyers contact me to purchase things when I am on time away. I can "reply with offer" and make sales. Now only getting sales when I end time away. I will report this/tell everyone I know,....................... that eBay is unfair to me. (input sarcasm emoji of your choice here)

·3 years agoContacting Ebay is useless. The staff there reads from scripts. Ebay management knows what they are doing. I too will have no sales and then suddenly I get 4 to 5 sales and of course, all will go to the West coast. I live on the east coast.

·3 years agoAlgorithms are set up so that sales beget sales. They are also set up to allow certain districts in the country to see items in certain districts, I have no idea how they set up their districts, but I know they do that. A good friend of mine, who recently passed, worked on creating algorithms years ago for Amazon, and I believe they all just followed suit after those first few were set up. She gave me some info that has worked well with one of my Etsy shops...I'm place holding this eBay shop until I get the time to work on it...but here were her suggestions for selling, and like I said, it worked for me on Etsy, my first shop there sold more than 5,000 items in a little more than 4 years...these were vintage, sometimes expensive, one of a kind things...and anyone who knows anything about Etsy knows they hate vintage and don't give it any sort of boost other than what the algorithms allow. First is to list, list, list...that brings you higher in search. Second is to work on your shop every day even if it's just to edit something. Third is to run sales, and the more followers you get the better that works. (I will list something on Monday morning and it often sells by Monday evening on Etsy because I have a couple thousand followers who get notice of something new being listed. I don't know how eBay does that but I'm sure it's something similar) Fourth was to advertise with the site you're on. (I do ads on Etsy and piddle with them during the day, raising my spend amount then lowering it after I have a certain number of sales.)
Five is to put some of your listings as multiples and with others list them separately. (that's part of your sales beget sales)
There were a couple of other things she told me to always do, but those were the most important. So I'd say that something in those algorithm settings probably kicked in for you. But for the life of me I can't understand why you'd "contact" eBay to complain about getting sales. Just enjoy that extra money and head to the grocery store or your favorite resale shop.

OP3 years agoIt's a little after 3:00 AM in Hawaii right now
So I packed up my 7 orders last night.
I also listed a few items.
I just got a sale on one of the items I just listed a few hours ago.
I don't use promoted listings and my customer was somehow able to find my item and buy it even with the broken search engine.
How can that be?
I'm going to pack this last order and ship it this morning along with the other 7 orders.
Have a great weekend everyone!

·3 years agoIt's perfectly normal. Where are you getting your facts from? How did you come to that conclusion that it's not normal? It's happened to me multiple times. Uncommon is a much better word to use.
Unavailable member
·3 years agoA 400% jump is not normal! AND for that kind of jump in sales, that means that someone else must be losing out. Some other seller has gone from seven sales a day down to just one or two. /s

OP3 years agoYou, my friend, are a genius.
mn467462
·3 years agoIt is normal. We're talking single digits here. Now if it went from 1-2 to 500, now that that would be abnormal. But something that you can count on your hands, no.
lakefor94
·3 years agoHere is one for you. ~12 days of nothing. Coincided with opting out of EIS. Also, I was doing sell similar on about 100 items per day earlier in the month and thru the dry spell. (389 items) That did not work at all. Some would get a few views.
I quit the sell similar effort and did a 10% off sale on everything. That shook things up a bit.
Also did a PL campaign on the 389 listings that I was doing the sell similar effort. The PL's did not do much, a little, but not much.
1,200 listings and I had been listing new stuff weekly. Quite a few sales on the new listings the past 2 weeks. But nothing for 12 days? Never EVER came close to 12-day dry spell. 4 or 5 days, sure, here and there over the last year.

·3 years ago@inhawaii i think you hit the nail on the head. although i do not think it is reverse throttling. i think it is just how bad the system is set up. They are constantly playing catchup with the search issues and adapting and tweaking algorithms. Perhaps they made an adjustment to show your items in more that 4 states at a time instead of the rolling state to state visibility that sellers notice sometimes...... that increased visibility would account logically for more sales.
I know we are on different sides of this but honestly ebay has admitted that they control visibility of individual accounts under various circumstances- so if they admit it- why is it so hard to think that they do it?
If ebay is doing an amazing job- why have they been in a constant state of decline and market share loss and GMV loss for several years?
Lastly - all other things considered, you sell a very small amount of very inexpensive items compared to many of us here that are commenting..... that is not to say you opinion is not valid, but isnt it completely reasonable to believe that a full time seller may see different results or problems than a hobby seller? Why do you try to invalidate what is happening to us? That is like someone that just started a roadside lemonade stand telling Walmart how to run a business because they know better........It makes no sense
inhawaii
OP3 years agoI'm not telling anybody how to run a business.

·3 years agoits just to get your hopes up for the big summer slowdown
ebay wants to make sure you stick around for the entire summer so they did a teaser sale for you
thats my theory, ebay is controlling the market for you not your customers
it sounds like someone did a store reset, yeah that must be it, your store was put on reset
they flipped the switch and turned up the dial
@inhawaii

OP3 years agoSneaky. Very sneaky.
One of these days I'm going to stop doing business with this unethical company.

·3 years agoIs the summer slowdown such a thing anymore? The summer slowdown seems to have occurred when more people (particularly those with money) were away on vacation and away from their computers or simply doing more outdoor activity. It seemed more prevalent about fifteen years ago when fewer people had smart phones.
However, for me it does slow down a bit when school starts cause people are tapped out from back to school shopping. Clothes and school supplies for a couple of kids can easily run about several hundred dollars and nowadays the shopping list often includes a laptop.
