Return Inquisition and No Shipping Label to Return
Summary: katvonr0 is a new seller who encountered a problem when trying to refund a buyer due to a damaged item before shipping. They had to pay out of pocket for a shipping label they thought they had not purchased or printed. caldreamer suggested that if the item was never shipped, canceling the order should automatically refund the buyer, but this doesn't cancel the shipping label. stephenmorgan and onlinecentral advised checking a specific section on eBay to cancel the label for a refund. christworks explained the potential confusion between buyer-paid shipping and purchasing a shipping label, and noted that funds might initially come from the seller's account until the buyer's payment processes.
Hi! Brand new seller here just trying to declutter. I went to refund the buyer after the item was damaged in the process before I could ship it out, but it had me pay a couple dollars out of pocket to return the shipping label. I read on here I'm supposed to cancel the label, but when I went to the shipping section to cancel it, there was no proof of any label to cancel. I know it's just a couple dollars, but I'd prefer to not have to pay it if possible.
Any advice?
Thank you!!

·1 month agoGo to the item and pretend you are going to print out a label again - "get another label".
It will warn you that you've already printed out a label.
Then it will give you two options: "Reprint" or "Manage shipping labels".
Click on "Manage shipping labels".
Then cancel/void the shipping label.
It takes about two weeks to get a refund.

·1 month ago@katvonr0 Are you confusing what the buyer paid you for shipping with actually buying a shipping label? Those are two different things.
If you never shipped the buyer anything and did not actually purchase a shipping label, then you did not buy a shipping label. This is why there is nothing for you to cancel. But, if you charged the buyer for shipping (in addition to the cost of the item), then when you refunded you would also have to refund them the amount they paid to you for you to buy the shipping label to ship their item.
In other words, if you cancel an order, the buyer gets back everything they paid.
The reason why you may have paid out of pocket is because the buyer's funds quite possibly had not finished processing. When that happens, if there are no available funds in your account, eBay may charge your account on file in order to fund the buyer's reimbursement. Then, when the buyer's funds process, your eBay account will have that money in it and you can get it back through a payout.

·1 month agoGo to the My eBay Shipping Labels, Track and manage your shipments screen.
https://www.ebay.com/ship/labels/my-ebay
Click on the word Actions to the right, within the oval.
Click on Cancel Label.
If the label never gets a scan, you will be refunded in a few weeks.

·1 month agoThis isn't making any sense to me....if you were able to "cancel" the order then no label had been purchased. But if you are being charged for a label, then it had to be purchased, maybe not printed, but purchased. At that point you cant cancel the order, you needed to refund the buyer, and then go back and cancel the label in order to get that money back.
But if you were able to cancel, that means no label was paid for, so why would you have been charged for it, that is the odd part here....what am I missing?

·1 month agoDid you discover item was damaged "before" you shipped item to the customer? If that is the case, you should go to Orders, All Orders (click CANCEL ORDER and customer will automatically be refunded).
If customer already "received the item" and then complained about damage and wants to return item, you would be forced to pay for "return shipping".
If you "did not print label" there is nothing for you to cancel.

OP1 month agoIt was damaged prior to shipping, so I canceled the order before sending it out to avoid the hassle. However, I still had to pay $$ out of pocket for the shipping label, even though I never paid or printed it? Just lost if I get that money back!

·1 month agoGo here and see if you have a Shipping Label.

If you do then cancel it and you will get a refund in a few weeks.

·1 month agoThis is incorrect. If a label was purchased, it needs to be canceled in order for the OP to get the price credited.
Cancelling the order (choosing damaged/lost as the reason) will automatically refund the buyer, but that doesn't cancel the shipping label.
