Did anyone else notice that ebay must have updated the search parameters for the research tool? It used to be actually relivant to what you typed in the box ( like ebay as a whole 10 years ago)..... but now it returns hundreds of nonsense results like the main site and the app searches do.
What is ebay doing up there?----- the first to suffer was the main platform several years ago with more and more AI search involved.... then the phone app started to suffer as well. Just today i noticed the ridiculous search results on the research guide tool. It is working just the main website- useless.
We have not been able to use "sold listings" filter on ebay for about 4 years to do any kind of product research because it must pull information from the entire listing and all item specifics so you get hundreds or thousands of non relevant results and never what you look for.
Now the research tool is doing the exact same thing instead of search ing on th title or main atributes.
It is frustrating because now we no longer have a source to research price trends- at least for general searches on ebay we can go to google to find good ebay results for current item- but even google is not going to pull a 4 year old sold listing.
Ive never seen a business undermine itself so much and so often- makes no sense!
Ebay - how did we get here?- in 2026- the search should be getting better- NOT WORSE.

That problem is just ONE of the increasingly obvious results of the exponential increase of the use of AI by eBay and so many other companies. Here's the deal as I see it: Companies today are cramming AI up our asses, and eBay is definitely championing this movement. AI "data centers" (actually surveillance logging centers) are already costing people their lives, occupations, home values, reasonable expectation of privacy, and peace of mind. They are contaminating huge amounts of our water, giving it back to us full of very toxic pfas "forever" chemicals, and draining megawatts of power from the grid, with sudden disregard for the "green" movement. This results in vastly excessive amounts of heat, noise, and carbon dioxide being released into our environment by these centers.
AI routinely makes HUGE mistakes, yet is increasingly being put in charge of the major systems that have been supporting our lives for so many years. We need to fight this evil takeover in every single way posssible, no matter what the cost to our conveniences, or how uncomfortable this battle makes us. If we do not, very soon AI will outrank us a species, and we will vanish, just as all the millions of "inferior" species we have already so flippantly rendered to the oblivion of extinction.
Although it is going to cause a great deal of inconvenience and discomfort in my life, today I am going to initiate the closure of my long-standing eBay account with it's perfect record, and the deletion of all my data, which we all know, will never actually be erased at all. My biggest regret is that this will take 60 DAYS to accomplish, even though I have no outstanding transactions at this time. This is just a way for eBay to stall, in anticipation of the General AI takeover which is so close to being activated. Please, please, please, WAKE UP PEOPE!, and wake up everyone you can about this before the coming event horizon, after which it will be TOO LATE for all mankind to turn the tide in this crucial battle!

We are all guilty of wanting to take the easy path at times doing whats right is the challenge I have been seriously considering closing up ebay because of this and have been making a stand speaking out on platforms of the dangers of this control grid being set for us.

I do not post articles, but I do offer some very in-depth responses to intelligent and credible authors' articles. I also debate comments left by others in standing up for our fading rights and liberties, and the rapid onset of the upcoming demise of humanity unless we very quickly take every action within our grasp to put a stop to this unGodly evil. Hope to meet up with you out there!
Btw, "closing up eBay" is a very difficult thing to do, but as of this writing, the request to close my account and delete my data has already been submitted. Somehow I'll get by without the benefits eBay offers in order to combat the exponential expansion of AI. None of us will live forever, and I, for one, will stand fast in my refusal to be part of the problem...
and I won't back down.

·1 week agoI also have trouble finding what I want to buy. I try to use eBay because I sell on the platform and I support where my money comes from. I have on at least a couple of occasions been so frustrated that I went to brand A to purchase what I needed. An example is trying to find a OEM auto part. If I can't find it I think of the thousands of others that must be frustrated also. Just venting.

·1 week agowhen you are searching, note that the upper listings will inevitably be "promoted" listings and will state that to the lower right of the listing title, even if they do not match your search parameters at all.
Also note that a "no match" at all will generally default to a long long list of baseball or collectible cards that have ZERO relation lol
I do a lot of research..... you just have to navigate the system is all or better define/refine your search. typically 3 words or more will result in a better catch. It just depends, sometimes you need many extra words.
"advanced" search functions sometimes can help

it is unchanged, has filters, it's a tool. It's just a matter of using it to your advantage.
keywords are your friend.........
if I really want to find anything for sale or sold on ebay it's just a matter of word or number filtering
If I am having trouble finding something I filter my search better and if it is not found then it is either super rare or none have been listed or sold in the last 3 years.
it even tells you if the item was originally listed 20 years ago, it also reveals what the accepted offer price was
it shows if the price is trending up or trending down, etc, etc and more

·1 week agoYes this is very irritating , If I am buying a specific mower part I expect to type in my brand and part number and get a few results , not have to scroll through 50 non related items to find my part at the bottom of the search listing this has to be hurting both buyer and seller

·yesterday at 5:53 PMIncorrect. You can put in an exact make and model number of something and get mostly unrelated results. Just this week I was doing research on one computer on items and found the results. I then did photos of my item and went to another computer down the hall to upload and do the listing. When I got to that computer it gave completely irrelevent results and I couldn't even find the listings I was looking at.
I had to go back to the other computer and email the link to myself just to find the same results. Ebay has become unsearchable and if experienced users can't find what they are looking for just imagine what casual or new buyers go through. They will just go elsewhere. They are not going to waste their time making futile attempts to find what they are looking for on ebay when they can find it somewhere else. It is bad business for all of us.

·1 week agoThe spamming and putting "OEM" in the title has plagued eBay for a few years now. Never used to be such a problem, I think they used to crack down on it more.
Anymore it seems like as long as eBay gets their pound of flesh from the sale, they turn a blind eye to it.

·1 week agoI have never found the research tool to be of much value.
The data is unduly variable and reflective of pricing which is only valid for the time of the sale. It reflects the mistakes of the listing sellers as well as the skills of some, and the random nature of when someone is shopping for the item.
It is only close to accurate for valuing high volume, common or commodity products, and that can cease to be the case without warning.
At its best, it is accurate for an item like an Oprah Book Club selection, and only while Oprah cares.

But once I got down into the comments and saw that you're in auto parts, nothing could be less surprising, in fact what's more surprising is that you've only recently found it difficult to get appropriate results.
I probably don't have to tell you, there are tons of unscrupulous auto parts sellers who absolutely FLOOD their listings with keywords, relevant or not, just to make their listings show up in more searches. To my knowledge that has been an issue for years, but maybe there's a new crop of such sellers, and/or they're doing more duplicate listings?
I feel so bad for good honest parts sellers. It seems like just about every sign points to "eBay is no longer a good place to sell this" anymore.

You are correct. Main search, filter, sort is bad.
Switching to sold is completely worthless. Especially on older vehicle parts.
It's pretty much impossible to research prices due to eBay hiding listings, and other forms of search manipulation.
BTW.....If all you're making on here is lunch money, doubt you would think there's any issue at all. In fact, you might even argue that eBay doesn't hide or throttle any listings.

Mostly results that lack one or more of the search keywords, presumably. But from time to time I notice some that seem to have all the relevant keywords but are not included in the exact results. In some cases that can be the result of a transposed 1 or L or a o or 0 issue; in some situations eBay may do some odd keyword grouping where a group of keywords are treated distinctly from each individual keyword even though all the keywords are present.

Felt bad for the poor seller that got booted down to no mans land (results matching fewer words). When the part number was in their title, and ALL OVER their item specifics "part number" boxes.
And it was a basic search, sorted low to high. Because I want to see the best deal. I didn't want to buy just whatever popped up 1st.

Lowest first often shows fewer results. You are often better off sorting highest first, jumping to the end of the results and scrolling up. If you do that, the $79.99 cylinder appears in the exact results with the other ten.

OP1 week agovarious iterations of 1955 buick special radio or trim or clock... just trying to get comps on various dash parts but i get results for 1930 chevy hood bumpers, 1954 hubcaps, cigarette paks, ford thunderbird door lock, etc.
Just like trying t search on the main website.

·1 week agoLike when searching active listings, when using the Research tab of Seller Hub, I seem to get better results by grouping keywords together with dashes, excluding a random unrelated year (to eliminate results with every possible year included as a list), then drilling down to the specific category of interest -- possibly using more than one search if there are multiple categories.

OP1 week agoI would imagine that ther are a few tricks or ways to narrow down the results..... it works better last week and then this week it was noticeable worse. that was th epoint of my post. They are constantly changing and adapting algorithms- this version is less accurrate. I long for the days yearsa go when ebay just showed you what you searched for without all the tampering with the organic results. Some of it is due to seller item specific manipulation for sure.. but then again it is ebay's responsibility to make the search accurte to connect sellers and buyers. For me it always comes back to - the search used to work 100% better than now.... and if i can get accurate searches from google that has to look at infinetly more things.... ebay should be able to show me at least what is on ebay without all the clutter. It alway shocks me that i do a search on ebay and get no results, then cut and paste in to google and it shows me 7 current active ebay listings! I cant wrap my mind around it.

I tend to have the opposite experience, though that may be more a function of the sorts of things I am searching for.
Google often seems to show me listings (or product pages) that have been around for a long time and often that have already sold out or ended, where eBay shows me new, active results. In some cases Google has results that point to old listings which when followed are then forwarded to an active "similar" listing by eBay. Those active listings should be searchable directly on eBay, though they may use slightly different keywords than the original listing.

OP1 week agoA perfect example of eBay search for those who keep saying it's the buyers fault for not searching right. A simple 2 word search " mopar 3738072". Specific part number with brand qualifier ( note: without mopar in the search eBay shows nothing but baseball cards). Ebay has zero results.... Google has 2 results - one ACTIVE eBay listing and one sold listing
