"Require all buyers to provide a payment method before they make an offer "
I have the "Require all buyers to provide a payment method before they make an offer " setting checked.
So, then why is an offer I accepted earlier this morning still unpaid?
I realize it's still available for someone else to purchase, but I'm curious as to what the setting actually means.

·4 months agoI always thought a buyer having a valid shipping address before buying would also be a very handy thing

·4 months agoBest to simply turn off Offers if any of this upsets you. Stick to regular Buy It Now and you won't ever have to wait for a payment.

That's not the issue here.

·4 months agoBecause the buyer is still given 4 days to pay. If the do not pay on time, they will be charged to the payment method.
Ebay walks a tight rope between hungry sellers and buyers who want to combine shipping.

OP4 months agoThe Buyer made me an offer, and I accepted.
At the end of the four days without payment, eBay tells me the offer "expired."
I wonder what weight this setting holds if these deadbeat buyers are now getting "expired" rather than cancelled for nonpayment.

·4 months agoI also have this happen and my take is that the payment method on file is invalid or it is a card with no money left on it.
Payment is attempted but fails, then the transaction ends. In those cases, the buy it now item never officially ends in my store and there is no need to relist.

I understand all that -- the payment method failed and the listing was still up for someone else to purchase -- but am curious as to why eBay allows these particular types of nonpayments to be treated as "expired," rather than canceled for nonpayment?

·4 months agoGood question - maybe they are but it isn't visible to the seller? It is possible. I could go back and see if any of my previous failed purchasers are still on the site.

I suspect it's because my listing was still up for sale while awaiting payment (in contrast to a buyer who wins an auction and the listing is inactive), but IMO it's still a nonpayment and should carry the same consequences as far as my settings for blocking members with two unpaid item strikes in 12 months.

·4 months agoI absolutely agree, even if only for the false hope of a sale.

·4 months agoEvidently it does not hold much weight at all so why do they bother to offer that setting??, Anyone's guess.
