Requested refund
I read in multiple places “it’s against policy for a buyer to request a partial refund†but I can’t find that anywhere in policy. Does anyone know if this exists in print or is it just what people say?

·7 months agoHi, is this a new policy or has it been around for awhile?

·7 months agoIn a NAD request seller will issue the return label. But it's really up your seller if they wish to allow you to keep the item & offer you a partial refund

·7 months agoI think the point of the policy is basically to say a Seller can offer a partial refund to try to make the buyer happy, but a Buyer cannot say they want to keep the item and also demand a partial refund.

·7 months agoOn the Money Back Guarantee page where eBay tell buyers how to handle a dispute,eBay explicitly encourages partial refunds as one of the options.
When the item received by the buyer doesn't match the listing
Buyers and sellers may agree to another solution, such as a full or partial refund while the buyer keeps the item, or a replacement item instead of a refund.

This directly contradicts the other policy page posted above.

·7 months agoI know you can report buyers for asking for a partial refund...which has always seemed counterintuitive to me because if you read Ebay's Money Back Guarantee policy page, they encourage discussing a partial refund instead of returning the item for a full refund.

·7 months agoThe difference @cobra_viper and @luckythewinner is the seller can offer a partial refund and the buyer can accept. The seller can even offer the partial through the returns system.
But the buyer can't be the one to ask for a partial refund without a return.
Now in an amicable situation, sure, the buyer can suggest it and the seller can go along with it. But generally speaking if the buyer sends a message and says, "Of the 4 items I ordered, 1 arrived broken. Please send me a refund for the 1 item," the seller can report them for abusive behavior expecting a refund without a return.

·7 months ago@wastingtime101 Yes the seller can report that (or anything they want I guess), but I would consider that^ message fairly amicable, especially if they included a photo of the broken one. And I would probably rather refund 1/4 of the money than get the extant 3 returned anyway.
To me it's abuse when the complaint is petty or vague, the tone more hostile, especially the threat of negative feedback is made or clearly implied, if I don't give a partial refund. Something like "The condition looks worse in person, it's really worth maybe $____ -not the $____ that I paid. Hopefully you will make this right because I haven't left feedback yet." -Yeah I'm reporting that person pronto.

·7 months agoBuyers cant request it because its often a blackmail/extortion tactic. If the seller suggests it its a different matter, as it is one of several options the seller has available to potentially deal with an order issue.
Consider a different relationship analogy. On a date, a guy proposes sex, its regarded as red flags, pressure, presumptuous. If a woman proposes it, its a green light, and shes signalling theres no problem doing it. Same thing here.

·7 months agoMmmm, yeah, I might have worded that as "Demanding a partial refund" in these circumstances, because if you're being diplomatic about whatever the issue is, you can certainly float that as a request, and maybe the seller will agree.
The point that eBay is making (I think) in the other quoted page is that the seller does not have to agree to a partial refund (implying of course that the buyer would keep the item), but it's a valid option. The seller has the right to deny a partial and instead request the item be returned before refunding, and eBay will support that.
As a buyer, I have negotiated a partial refund several times in the past, for situations such as an item with a component that was supposed to be working but wasn't, or a shipment of boxes that came up way short of the promised number (for which we settled on a pro-rated refund since the boxes I did receive were perfectly fine).

LOL, I didn't write the policy, I just copied and pasted it here from the ebay policy page!
@herway
I don't know when this policy was implemented, but I know it's been mentioned in various posts on these boards for years, so it's not new.
