Reporting returned item damaged is the same as asking ebay to step in..
Ebay accepted a buyers return request. I believe they paid postage. Item returned to me damaged and not saleable. I saw the option to deduct from the refund, but reported the item damaged first.. This click of the button basically screwed me, as now I can't deduct for the loss. If reporting damage is asking ebay to "step in", then they should actually do something for the seller. Not just make some invisible mark against the buyer.

OP2 years agoSorry I wasn't more specific........
Yes, my site preferences are set at 14 days, buyer pays postage.
The item was returned as "Doesn't fit".
This item, a vintage gear shift knob in good used condition was returned with the opening smashed out of round and the threads damaged. This Did Not happen during shipping. It Cannot be resold.
I read and understood that I could deduct up to 50% of the sale price from the refund unless I asked ebay to "step in". I should have taken the deduction while it was available.
MY COMPLAINT is that IT'S NOT CLEAR that clicking the link to report damage is asking ebay to "step in". Obviously nothing happens to offer the seller a chance to present the facts for a fair outcome. Which is what you'd expect if ebay actually did step in.

A site preference is different. What you are talking about here is your return policy. In your Site Preferences you can also set up automated returns if you want.

That is a Buyer REmorse return, so your Buyer is required to pay the return shipping. When you receive the item and you go to refund it, you can refund the buyer for the product only and not the original shipping if you had stated shipping. If you did free shipping you are not allowed to deduct the original shipping.

As I said earlier, when you ask Ebay to step in, the vast majority of the time they are going to rule for the buyer and force your refund.

OP2 years agoYou danced all around the issue, but did not address my complaint.

·2 years agoI addressed the things you said in that post. You may not agree, but that isn't the same as I didn't address it. The link I gave you should help.
FYI, your 14 day return policy isn't something you should have on many of your listings. You can't enforce it as it is against the MBG.

·2 years agoThe return policies options are as follows.
With option number 1, No Returns the seller can completely deny taking a return for a Buyer's Remorse Return Request. Or if they want to, they can accept the return and have the buyer pay the return shipping. If the seller so chooses, they can withhold the original shipping if it was separately stated on the listing [not free shipping] when it is time to refund the buyer.
On options 2 & 3 the buyer is responsible for the return shipping on a Buyer's Remorse Return. Plus, if the seller so chooses, they can withhold the original shipping if it was separately stated on the listing [not free shipping] when it is time to refund the buyer. As of October 1st 2019, sellers that are TRS have some additional protections as well as they can issue partial refunds if they use options 4 or 5 as their return policy.
On options 4 & 5 above, they are also known as Free Returns. If a seller that has either of those policies, they will pay the return shipping even on a buyer's remorse return. A seller can withhold the original shipping value from the refund if the shipping was separately stated in the listing [not free shipping]. Also, Seller’s offering options 4 or 5 have the ability to do partial refunds in certain cases if the item arrives back damaged, missing something or in a condition less than what it was sent to the buyer in, see the policy for more details, the link is below. In the cases where a deduction in the refund is taken due to damage or other authorized reasons for a partial refund, Ebay will protect the seller from negative or neutral feedback.
ALL OPTIONS [1, 2, 3, 4 and 5] are required to process SNAD claims without exception. Even if they are improperly filed and should have been a Buyer’s Remorse claim.
All return policies by sellers must meet or exceed what is stated in the Money Back Guarantee Policy!
14 day return policies are allowed in certain categories: Jewelry & Watches, Collectibles & Art, Cameras & Photo and Medical, Mobility & Disability Equipment.
For those with Free Return and/or TRS members with 30 day return policies, there are some added protection benefits, one of which is the ability to do a discounted refund under certain conditions.

·2 years agoI'm not sure why you would have had the option to hold back some of the return as I don't think that you qualify. In order to qualify a seller must be a trs and offer free returns or 30 days returns. An above standard seller has to offer free returns.
Afaik reporting a buyer is NOT asking ebay to step in. Did you use THIS link or another one? If you had used that link, I don't think that would have resulted in ebay stepping in. If you used a link in the claim, ebay would have considered that as you asking them to step in, I'm sorry that it wasn't made clear.

·2 years agoI'm pretty sure that you have to have a 30-day return policy in order to be able to deduct up to 50% from the refund when the item isn't returned in the same condition.
EDIT: Here's the policy and the section that would apply:

Ebay accepted a buyers return request.
Unless you have your site preferences to auto accept Return Requests, Ebay doesn't auto approve a Return Request. Keep in mind that the shear fact a Buyer Opens a Return Request doesn't mean ANYONE [you or Ebay] have "accepted" the request. It merely means the buyer has filed one.
I believe they paid postage.
Again only if you have your site preferences set to have Ebay auto accept returns. Otherwise it takes the seller to accept the request and issue the return shipping label.
Item returned to me damaged and not saleable.
What is extremely important here is What was the reason the buyer gave when opening the Request. That is an important piece of info.
I saw the option to deduct from the refund, but reported the item damaged first..
If the buyer received the item from YOU damaged. That would likely mean it was damaged during shipment. A buyer is NOT responsible for that, you are as the seller. And nothing less that a full refund will be appropriate.
This click of the button basically screwed me, as now I can't deduct for the loss. If reporting damage is asking ebay to "step in", then they should actually do something for the seller. Not just make some invisible mark against the buyer.
If you ask Ebay to step in the changes are HIGH that they will force you to refund, you get a defect on your account and you will not get your FVFs refunded.
The key thing that you need to share is WHAT was the reason the buyer used to open the claim??
You can see ALL the details on your Return Request record. Look at it closely, don't assume anything.
