PROMOTIONAL LISTINGS HOW DOES THIS MAKE YOU FEEL
You go to the local newspaper to list your products for sale. You pay for the listing. BUT when you check the newspaper for your listing, It's not in the paper?
You call the paper and ask, WHATS UP! Then they tell you oh, You did not pay to promote your listing, Your just paying for the AD? DID YOU WANT US TO PROMOTE IT TOO ? Well can I get my money back for the listing IT DID NOT SELL! They say > WHAT's WRONG WITH YOU! YOU PAID FOR the AD. But if1 you want to promote it we have a sell on PROMOTIONS. But of course you have to pay for another listing fee. And by the way DON'T FORGET WE FULLY EXPECT A PART OF WHAT YOU SELL AS WELL.
MY QUESTION > Would you support this NEWSPAPER ? And I list on eBay WHAT HAPPENS WITHOUT
PAYING FOR PROMOTIONS? And does this action really help eBay as they also earn from sales?
WHAT AM I MISSING? If I'm paying for a listing HOWEVER I'm PAYING I FULLY EXPECT IT TO BE PROMOTED IN EVERYWAY POSSIBLE. Is my thinking wrong on this?

OP3 years agoOK If I pay extra for a eBay promotion will eBay target a customer base for that item? or the category that listing is in, or is this a OK we will show it on the front page and hope that the preferred customer for that item stumbles on to it? Does it include targeting cell phones users for that type of buyer or persons in that business for that type of item and eBay buyers?

·3 years agoEBay is like a consignment shop that has made a business decision to put items in the front of the store that people pay a higher percentage of the sale to them for. They used to try to bring in buyers by putting items near the front if the store they thought would be most interesting to the buyers or were newer etc. But for whatever reason they have decided they want the money from that higher consignment percentage badly enough to just make it more pay to play and even if you have great items, if you do not pay a high enough percentage they will go to the back of the store no matter how desired they are by the customers.
It's eBay's choice and it's probably hurting their platform because people come here to browse and see the same China crap and get frustrated and go elsewhere. As sellers we also have the option to go elsewhere to sell our Goods. Hopefully someday soon we see a competitor rise up that allows us to sell for more reasonable costs.
Business is Cutthroat but it is what it is and I try not to waste my brain space obsessing and worrying about it. I personally take a little bit of time to research how many competitors I have on each item and only promote those that have like at least 10-20 different people selling the same item. Especially since their latest scheme where they charge us the percentage we promote if the buyer has looked at any of our promoted listings in the last month.

Yes, you are confusing your wishful thinking with reality. You pay for a listing, and it is shown and it is searchable from the search engine. That is what you are paying for.
You want to try to get it higher in the search results? You want your listing to appear on pages other than the search results page? You can promote your listing.
So, the first thing to do is realize that putting up your listing does nothing more than it has always done: your listing is live, it is searchable. Even the listing page itself is not "your" real estate...ebay can and will fill it with links to promoted listings. And if you want your listing to appear on all these other pages, including listing pages, then you promote.
That's reality.
It really doesn't matter what you feel you should get when you put up a listing, what matters is what you DO get. You need to work from there.
Whether promoting makes sense for what you are selling is a business decision you need to make. So, instead of making assumptions or insisting that something "should" work this way, learn how ebay actually works before you do much more.

OP3 years agoOK I get it the BIGGER THE AD the more it COST. Same as the papers.
I was hoping my listings would show up and open up on all Computers Around the world as they started their page like Microsoft does. OH WELL What was I thinking..

Can you give us a link to one of your listings that cannot be found on eBay?
MORE REALISTIC VERSION:
You pay for a classified ad, and when you look in the paper you see one of your competitor's ads is splashed across the front page. You call the paper and ask, WHATS UP? Why is my ad only buried in the classified ads, and not splashed across the front page?"
They say, "You did not pay for a front page ad. You only paid for a classified ad. And by the way, the first 250 of your classified ads are free each month so you actually paid nothing for the ad."

·3 years agoSo your items can be found, and you were just suggesting a problem that did not actually happen to you?
e.pluribusunum7
OP3 years agoWELL YESS AND NO. I'm spoiled from the early days. You just listed and eBay promoted your listing.
There was no extra for promoting your listing.
Today they want extra fees to promote your item. And that does not make me feel good about listing items.
The problem I feel may be in the wording. You can list BUT WE ARE NOT GOING TO PROMOTE IT UNLESS YOU PAY FOR PROMOTING IT. Maybe they should say your listing will be fully listed inside the eBay system. If you want extra listings outside of eBay we provide a promotion for that service.
The way I read it is you can list it and it will only show to your selling group or in a very limited area of eBay

I can't figure out "the way you read it" because I have no idea what you mean by "within your selling group" or "in a very limited area".
In my experience virtually every item on eBay can be found by searching eBay. Are you saying this is not the case?
You can list BUT WE ARE NOT GOING TO PROMOTE IT UNLESS YOU PAY FOR PROMOTING IT
Your item will not appear as a promoted listing unless you pay to make it a promoted listing.
But that is not the same as suggesting your item cannot be found on eBay.

OP3 years agoI really don't know anymore. I fully understand why sales are slowing
On the other hand I'm also a victim of the economic brakes being applied
Then their is the results that we all feel. And like everybody we want to blame something. And ignore the real reason for the slow down that is in front of us all.
I just need to list and forget about the folks on the other end playing games with us all. They need to break it so they can fix it with a NEW DEAL... In the end, I'm sure they will work it all out.

·3 years agoYou sound VERY confused on how Ebay search works. Ebay DOES NOT place your items magically in the eyes of buyers. A buyer types in specific words and then Ebay shows the buyer what they typed. You still have not returned to tell us what Ebay is hiding so we can help you find it ?
e.pluribusunum7
OP3 years agoSo does eBay show the Items of what you typed in your search, or does eBay show the promoted items of what you typed? Or those items first.
As far as target marketing that seems to be normal today.
You know I think I really need to try a promotional listing before saying anything.
I may be putting the cart in front of the horse here. THE OLDER I GET THE BETTER I WAS

Therein is the problem with PL for those that initially got lulled into PL. So your competition now has a front page newspaper add and you are left with a dilemma. Do you buy a bigger front page add than your competition? If not what good is your small add doing and why would you continue to pay for it?

·3 years agoI agree, the number of sellers here who claim their listing isn't showing in the results most likely also have little to no understanding of how a search engine actually works. They click submit and expect their listing is there for everyone to see instantly, and for keywords the sellers has chosen to boot - meaning these sellers know exactly what key words the buyers will be using, and more so the key words the search engine would actually index (which again boils down to that understanding I spoke of in the first sentence).

OP3 years agoThis was true in eBays early days. I have been with eBay since 1998. You listed and your listing showed where ever eBay could reach. But then again you could ask the computer any question and you got a answer.

·3 years agowell maybe thats because we learned to use searches thru google not this wackadoo search engine ebay has come up within the past few years ( its a joke of a search engine ) just use google its easier ... and i can not certainly see the benefits as ebay has lost 25% of there customers and GMV is down to where it was a decade a go ( 2013)

·3 years agoNot a good analogy....
Any paper (or print media) fully allows you to buy a Bigger add for more money (instead of promoted listing, this is called a display ad)
This bigger ad is placed above the regular ads for more visiblity...
Your ad is there, but it is buried with all the other "regular" ads.....
The old phone books are a perfect example.
Regular Listing
BOLD Listing
COLOR Listing
1" Ad Listing
etc....etc....
it's always been pay to play
(I do not agree with flooding the listing page though)
