Promoted Listings Views Plummet on 7/16-7/17
Has anyone else noticed their promoted listings impressions/views plummet starting July 16th-17th? I’ve asked a few other sellers and they’ve noticed the same. I’m wondering if this is a widespread issue.

·3 years agoJust FYI for everyone following along here - one of the UK "blues" has finally confirmed/acknowledged there was a test running July 18-28 that would have impacted Promoted Listings Impressions.

There was some testing of new features which affected impressions. Testing on Promoted listings took place between 18th and 28th July and during this time some of our members may have noticed a different experience.
This has now been completely stopped and the impressions will return to their normal patterns.
We have been passing all the feedback from this thread to the promoted listings team and your feedback will help shape future updates.

I know there have been many issues with search, impressions, PL ads and more that have been hitting sellers pretty hard for a while now and I truly hope eBay eventually takes all of these issues seriously and provides some transparent communication about what is going on.
But it's at least nice to know we weren't crazy about what we were observing was happening during this specific timeframe with changes to how PL were being displayed and the impact we were assuming that may have had on impressions. 😂

·3 years ago@nuclearomen My plan is to keep listing with a focus on Q4. But I'm definitely keeping my options open, to maybe start some multi channel efforts even sooner than I had planned. I looked at the agenda for ebay open. It can be difficult to figure out much from the agenda, as far as what new things might be announced, but there's nothing in the agenda that really hints at any sort of new, game changing policies or tools.
I view today, August 1st, as the unofficial start of Q4, and hopefully things will start to pick up, not only because we're rolling out of summer but because ebay might actually get itself back on track, at least a little bit.

·3 years ago@my-cottage-books-and-antiques i list all the time usually, at least once daily in general. There are days I skip, sometimes I'll purposely skip several days, but daily is the general. The past month/month and half been ending older listings and doing new listings of them with some new stuff in between til about a week ago I started to list mostly new stuff. I have shelves and there are several cubes in those shelves for new inventory/not listed yet - they are full, completely with about 4x big boxes with vinyl still in them new inventory not listed. With new shipments coming every week, several times a week (had 6x this week so far come in). So it was time to start shifting through the mass and list some new stuff. If I placed everything I have here, it would bring my store to around 600 listings or there abouts... in earlier times things sold faster and wouldn't hesitate to list everything asap but anymore feel the site is so out of wack and with PL and horrid indexing and the crud ways they run this site there is a lot that gets listed and just sit with not much views where outside this platform they sell fast. One down to me removing myself from SM sites was I would make a post and have a sale within few hours but I took myself off those sites some years ago, the loss on the flip side was several thousand followers, and that can come in handy when the site decides to play games with sellers norm selling activity.
I do sell more generally in colder times, idk why, vinyl doesn't have a season, but that seems to happen. It's not the quarter so much, it's the quarter on this platform that is the question. They continuously aim at opposite of economy is actually doing. They say it as reason for lack of traffic and sales but it's always the opposite in the real world. I got the invite for open this morn on inbox, deleted it, I don't have time for their horrid open, sit there listen to people talk rubbish for nothing. This company needs to take a good hard look at the people they hire and the jobs those people do, they are out of touch and completely clueless in the marketplace anymore and that is their fault. A strong and prosperous Q4 here will be another Q of failure and stress.

·3 years agoThe only thing I will comment in regards to @mr_lincoln is that b/c I sell in a super-saturated category, I already DO promote to a max of 10% & with all the competition, most of my PL sales (which are the majority of my sales period) ARE at the 10% rate & have been for quite some time. So they're already getting their >20% fees from me & my sales have not been anything to write home about 😞

·3 years ago@simply-the-best-for-you Yes, it may vary from category to category, I might look at sponsored listings to see WHO the other Sellers are in my categories but the frustration is simple ... I haven't made any major changes int he last 2 years with what I sell or how I list but eBay has made changes and there has been no growth to speak of one month shy of a year and a half. While prior to their changes I was seeing growth.
My charts make it clear, they want high ad rates to sell our stuff, period. I sold more in 17 days at 12% than 31 days @ 4% ...
I will continue to test things but sadly I have been forced to move inventory to other venues since eBay has elected to suppress my listings on their platform ... I prefer selling on eBay but when Sell through rate plummets I still need to move inventory ...

·3 years ago@simply-the-best-for-you my PLS ended yesterday just shy of 20K, right now it's at little above 12K...i didn't check it today til now, so it's performing much better and much closer to usual. As stated in past, my PL impressions never reach really high like some others, I sell in a tight niche that is only really interest for die hard maniacs really.

While I am a die-hard metal-head & am very knowledgable (I got Eddie Trunk beat by a mile), even I haven't heard of most of the bands you sell. Which is probably for the best, as I am not a 'cookie-monster' vocals fan. Glad to hear your impressions are returning to normal too. Seems pretty clear that it was this sponsored ad test that was the culprit. IDK what we'd do without @valueaddedresource 🥂. Time to get out of here, I have real work to do.

·3 years ago@simply-the-best-for-you lol Trunk don't know nothing unless it's a '80 glam band - all those "guys" are laughable not to mention they are "feed" their info by producers. Headbangers Ball? Those guys were the same, know big acts but know not much of anything else. But anyways, it's a culture, and it's only known by those who delve into it. While it maybe a more secluded selling base, there are many into it and most of them are serious fans/collectors searching for stuff - always say "the Hunt is half the Thrill" 😉

·3 years ago@nuclearomen Trunk does know his stuff, but his range of knowledge is very limited. He annoys me but I do listen daily just b/c it's an easy way for me to keep up with what's going on. I will always love love 80's rock & metal, as well as 70's, since that fits my age range, but my knowledge base is much wider & I try to keep up on current rock/metal too. It's just hard to keep up on it these days. One of my favorite things in the world used to be the thrill of the hunt, in record stores. Sadly, those are much more limited now & I don't travel every week like I used to. I know there's a smaller, but very passionate market for more intense metal. Trivium is about as heavy as I've gotten. Wish I had a lot more time to check out newer bands.
Anyways, will be interested in seeing how your impressions go. I was just talking to my DH & I realized that yesterday was the first day I'd had 'organic' sales in about 2 weeks (by organic I mean no offers & no PL's, just someone finding something they wanted & buying it), I had 2 of those yesterday & it was the first time in weeks, but until I said it out loud to him, I didn't realize, that coincides with the first day back to normal impressions. Interesting.

·3 years ago@nuclearomen Yeah, yesterday was interesting. I finished up with 134K impressions, which is significantly higher than 'normal' (around 95K), despite that I only had 1 sale & it was on something I'd sent an offer out on. No sales today so far either.

·3 years agoI just updated the other thread as well, but just FYI, I'm no longer see the apparent test that was removing most of the PL ads below the descriptions - in both FireFox and Chrome, both incognito and logged in, I'm back to seeing the full previous display of ~70+ other items on the the listing page.

Make of that what you will if you are starting to see impressions come back up now - unfortunately eBay doesn't seem to be terribly concerned with answering anyone's questions about either that apparent test or what the heck is really going on with PL impressions.

17.6 % of my listings have 1 View in the last 30 days
9.6 % of my listings have 2 Views in the last 30 days
That makes 55.7% of my listings have virtually no Views ... not good ...

My PL impressions are still WAY down. Around 70K, so they've gone up a bit, but still not at the 90-100K normal.

·3 years ago@simply-the-best-for-you I calculated them ... I set my Active list on 50 per page and did the math. My account is in the Post PLS Suppression phase where eBay buries or hides my listings as punishment for not using the Continuous setting on the PLS campaign .... prior to 2022 the suppression period lasted 7-10 days ... in 2022 it changed, it's like way longer now. My PLS ended on the 17th ... this is day 11, 2 BIN sales since last weekend ... it's pretty pathetic to be honest, I am also confident that it is intentional.

·3 years ago@mr_lincoln Thanks & sorry to hear that. I don't have time to run my actual numbers, but I swear mine seem just as bad. I'll but up 20 Sell Similars & days later most of them will still have 0 views, which is highly unusual. Thing is, for me, I AM still running a continuous PL campaign 😞 Summer is historically slow for clothing, but what's really scaring me is that out of my last 18 sales, 15 of them are from Offers Sent (and PL). But if I wasn't sending out offers, I'd have virtually no sales at all. I am one that was affected by the weird PL impressions drop that cut them almost in half.

·3 years ago@simply-the-best-for-you my PL stats are also still lower then normal was, but yesterday I did somehow manage to end with 15K daily total, which is up some from when this started but still lower. Sales also slow from a really good first half of the month start, views are down (suspect as @mr_lincoln reported, many items in total listings are just not being seen...and they are all promoted so yeah, PLS works great lately lol)

·3 years ago@nuclearomen Interesting, yeah my chart for yesterday is suddenly back up to 94K, which is my normal PL impressons. It wasn't looking that was during the day yesterday though. BTW, the last time it was at 94K was on the 16th. The 17th was down by 1/3rd, then the 18th was when mine dropped by half. It's stayed between 1/2-2/3's of normal until yesterday. BUT, when I had looked yesterday, it was looking like another 2/3's day of 70K. I wish I could remember what time that was b/c suddenly I look today & it's back to my normal 94K.
I did manage to maintain sales during this time, but as I posted above, it was b/c the vast majority of my sales during this time were from offers sent. There was almost no normal purchases.

·3 years ago@nuclearomen I don't think ebay makes up those numbers, but I also don't take them too seriously, precisely because they are an average, meaning some sellers will be above the percentage, but others will be below. And it is possible some of us will be much lower. So, to me, I get the general idea, I don't need ebay's average numbers to realize if I advertise effectively , I'll likely see an increase in my sales (and hopefully my overall profit). But it all depends on whether I use the tools effectively, and whether I use them smartly (that is, I increase my sales velocity and don't lose my shirt doing it LOL)
So, basically, those statements might as well be an adult speaking in a Peanuts cartoon: "wah wah wah wah...."
(And frankly, same thing for the "suggested rates"....)

·3 years agoI do...lol, may not be false for some, but I think majority lately has seen reduction in sales...and as said before whatever the cause(es) are, just keep going doing what you do. But their suggested are indeed made up, always have been, just they are a ton higher now then ever before, but I don't elect them, just laugh at them and say "yeah right, good luck"

·3 years agoSame thing with mine. All was well on the 16th, then on the 17th it started dropping. By the 18th I was flatlining and it is still falling. My sales are trash, to the point I am about to just give up on eBay over this.

·3 years agoThey went to an all time low of 20,000 promoted impressions yesterday , so from the 16th till today they have gone from 64,000 to 20,000, with todays promoted impression only at 15,000. this is the least amount Ive EVER had. Did get sales today but that was mostly from sending messages to my returning customers and slashing prices. if anyone knows what is going on Id love to to hear about it or a fix.

OP3 years agoImpressions are still down by a lot. I used to average about 125k impressions daily, now I'm averaging about 40k impressions daily. Sales will be ok one day and nonexistent the next, it's like a switch keeps turning on and off. Same with watchers on items, one day I'll have a decent amount of offers to send to watchers, the next day I get little to no watchers on items. Something is going on.

·3 years agoThe economy is going on. While it still robust people are going elsewhere for their goods. If it's cheaper on TEMU they buy on that site. If it's cheaper on Target they go there. For groceries I'm going to the Dollar Tree and Aldi the two lowest priced groceries in my city.
As for the light going on & off, that's been the MO of EB for decades. The theory is that they don't have the server capacity for all the activity (like AMZ) and they turn listings/stores on off.

·3 years ago@liawrig.nq8rdwqa3 Another theory is that they have an over abundance of listings and can suppress huge blocks of them in an effort to scare Sellers in to thinking they have to do SOMETHING!?! Like slash prices, double their PLS ad rates, etc. For the categories I sell in I can confirm it is not the economy ... if it were I would have a surplus of inventory acquired at an extremely low cost and wouldn't be having this pleasant conversation ...

Yesterday I had done some new listings, that maybe why impressions went bit higher + sent out newsletter yesterday also... haven't been listing new items lately really one here and there more was ending and relisting older listings til yesterday.

·3 years agoi just ate a pizza, when i started out it was whole pizza, then i ate 2 slices, it became not a whole pizza, but my apatite didn't register I ate some that pizza, so I ate 2 more slices. Now, it's half pizza, figured by now my PLS impressions have to be better, so I checked, it gain like 25 impressions, so I ate the other half of the pizza thinking "this is working!" - finished the pizza checked my campaign again...it only registered like 10 more impressions... How many pizza's do I have to eat to get my normal impressions back? 😆

·3 years agoI think the search is totally messed up right now. My son was looking at certain listing on his laptop and wanted me to buy it for him. So, I get on the app, and do a search for the listing, used the exact title and everything, never came up in the search results. We even tried to look up by user name, wouldn't show anything.

My last 30 day PLS ended on July 17th ... I only had one sale that day and am in the historical 7-10 day post PLS listing suppression phase where eBay buries my listings in search or doesn't even bother to show them. Since the PLS ended I have had NO BIN sales and do not expect any or many this coming weekend - which is the busiest selling time for what I sell. I've used PLS for several years and that trend emerged up until 2022 when it got worse after the introduction and implementation of PLA and the new Views counting tabulation. "It's not you it's us" applies here for sure.
I have had to divert more inventory to other venues over the last year then all previous selling years ... 3-4 times this year already which is unusual but sell through rate is horrible and I'm in this for the money ... not to let it sit around collecting dust ...

·3 years agoI've noticed a lot of you are larger sellers that are posting your data regarding an acute drop in pl impressions. I've watched quite a few Yotube videos from sellers describing the same issue.
I'm not trying to start an insurrectiom but I would use this opportunity to voice, so to speak, this data directly to Ebay.
I've stopped promoting for the time being just to see how things play out over the next few weeks or so.

eBay chooses to not be a GREAT place to sell by choosing to not listen to sellers. Deciding what sellers need without listening to seller input is part of eBay culture. I have been waiting for 20 years for eBay to embrace sellers as a powerful resource (not holding my breath now). eBay needs to change their paradigm if they want to be a GREAT place to sell (in my opinion).
There is no direct path to eBay, by eBay design. If you (we) are persistent you may be able to convince eBay moderators there is a problem. If you are successful, they will need to push the information uphill in eBay to get real answers/action. Unfortunately, it is an uphill battle to resolve issues rather than part of eBay's design to treat sellers as business partners (and allow sellers to help make eBay a GREAT place to sell).
This is an eBay user forum (with eBay moderators) and NOT a user forum with active eBay participation by eBay design. 🙄

·3 years agoThe common issue seems to be ALL campaigns have dropped to around the 10K daily impressions mark, for past few days been riding there as daily total. If you look at you campaign right now, it will be around 5K. The question is what did they do to make ALL campaigns ride a estimated 10K daily result...i didn't know it was even possible for algo's to provide the same daily results for ALL....this is strange!

·3 years agoso if you are having the issue and still having issue of very low impressions to normal, call ebay to make report so they will look into the issue and fix it. That is key, ebay does not read these boards, they must have an excess of sellers reporting the issue to look into it. - Just saying, I already called and put a ticket in.

Some of us are seeing in certain browser scenarios that eBay has either removed all other items from below the feedback module or is only showing what appear to be organic placements in that area.
When this happens, they are still showing one or two rows of PL ads above the description, but the massive amount of ads that are usually below the feedback module are not there.
eBay has very candidly admitted in the past that the vast majority of PL Standard impressions do not come from search, but rather from the View Item page, so whether this is a test or a technical issue, it stands to reason if enough users are having this experience, it might at least be a contributing factor in the drops in PL impressions being reported in the last few days.

·3 years ago@valueaddedresource i'll check it out bit later (the other thread). I called and made a ticket for them to look into it. I mentioned some also stated their listings were removed from campaigns on their items listings page in seller hub (none of mine were) but I ended and created new campaign 2 days ago and the impressions daily total hasn't changed, the fall started on the 15th for me and the spiral down to 10K daily impressions on graph has stayed at that rate for past 3 1/2 days.
as for the sponsored ads, idk if they are testing, they never send me the memo 😆 I listed some new listings today, i view those in incog window, didn't notice if they adds were organic or promoted, but they did show my ads and all mine are promoted.
I have to step out here for a bit. Got a FT management offer at my PT job yesterday and took the position today, starts Monday, got a bunch of stuff to do.

·3 years agopromoted listing impressions and views have gone down quite a bit for me as well. I ended a promotion last week and waited 16 hours to restart and had more views without the promotion than i did with it. on the 16th I had 64,000 promoted listing impressions and it has steadily declined since with yesterday being 28,000 promoted impressions and that was with me promoting at 13%. i usually wake up to at least 75 views and able to send multiple buyers offers on my items and this morning it was 12 views and no offers to send.
