Pre-register payment method to bid maybe working
We're had newbie buyers paying a day or two after winning the auction, but never minutes before we canceled till last week
Newbie bid, won and no payment till five? minutes before we could cancel as unpaid. Today on other id same deal - paid a few minutes before cancel time.
So maybe ebay still let's people wait four days before they step in and auto pay

·2 years agoThere are probably multiple reasons why a buyer doesn't pay til almost the last minute.
Did not realize he had won because he had a lot going on in his personal life.
Waited because of dates on his credit card cycle.
Waited because he was still shopping, hoping to find a better deal.
Thought he might want to buy another of the seller's items, hoping for combined shipping.
Etc.

What you are describing doesn't sound like it has anything to do with "preauthorizing" for bidding.
Those in the "test" would be paying instantly at the end of the auction with auto-payment unless they had no funds in the selected payment source when the auction ended.

OP2 years agoMaybe we missed it but where does ebay say it's set up to 'paying instantly at the end of the auction'
All we've seen/read is a payment source needed to be added before they could bid, nothing about instantly charging it.
Again this is two new ebayer, so maybe ebay wants to see if they do stuff, like paying. We also had an older ebayer who waited two days to pay, so if any/all were 'asked' to prefill, none were instantly paid.

·2 years agoIt's not instant; it's automatic. It's quick though. System will start processing as soon as auction ends or offer is accepted and can take 5 min or up to an hour. It will not take 4 days. The entire point is to prevent sellers waiting days for payment and to avoid unpaid items. Jack is correct, your transaction had nothing to do with auto-pay auctions/offers.

·2 years agothanks for clarifying what "I meant to say" 😠I will store the "automatic" in my data bank. Problem there is ............ when something is added................ something else gets deleted. Hopefully it is just "instant" that gets deleted😂

OP2 years agoAgain, maybe we missed it, but all we've seen/read is postings and replies from members about a payment source needed to be added before they could bid/offer, but I don't remember seeing anything official about this from ebay itself.
Now we know ebay did add the payment info upfront to both offers and auctions without telling anyone.
I went back four pages on the selling, buying and payment boards and lots of post about it, but no ebay replies. Nothing on the announcements.
So where are people getting the info that they post?

·2 years agoDo you read the seller updates? There has been info on this in several seller updates.
Other info came from eBay reps on this forum over the past year+.

OP2 years ago"Do you read the seller updates?"
No, as we have never hear of seller updates. Where would we find them.
wastingtime101
·2 years agoSeller Updates should always be reviewed in detail @steve_stuff . eBay announces a lot of important changes through these updates. They typically send 2-3 a year and sellers will always receive an eBay message (and email if your site preferences allow) notifying sellers.
The last Seller Update was sent on June 28th. I think we'll see the Fall update released within the next month (my guess is Oct 4, the week after eBay Open, if eBay follows the same pattern as last year).
You can access a few years of seller updates on this page:

OP2 years agoForget the last reply - we realize what you're talking about, the 'seasonal' seller updates.
We read when new but who remembers so went back and checked - the summer one mentions 'Unpaid Item' - but as the first sentence is "We’re testing a new feature that requires buyers to add a payment method on file before making offers on Best Offer listings." and we don't take offers we didn't read.
And after just reading, it doesn't mention bidding anywhere.
It did have a post from ebay saying 'The option to add an item to the cart is still there - there are no changes to that experience, so buyers will still be able to put multiple items together for a combined invoice' - but from complaints that wasn't correct info.

·2 years agoI have seen post from buyers that were "opted" into the program on some of the post in the community chats re providing payment information and then getting charged for bought items.
Buyers that are not opted into any program, or sellers that don't have automatic payment in place, have 96 hours to pay. So, sounds like in both cases, the buyer paid just under the wire.

@steve_stuff
From each other, by sharing experiences. Did anyone get a memo that buyers would no longer be able to combine items or request an invoice for multiple auction wins or offers once eBay forced the buyer ID into the program? Did the buyer realize when they put up a payment source for that "New Smoother Checkout" message, that they would be paying full price for shipping on 15 auction wins for postage stamps at a price of $3.00 each ($45.00 in shipping alone) for those 15 postage stamps? Did any seller get a notice from eBay that those default to YES buyer blocks were placed on their accounts, and what the consequences actually involve? Can a seller look in their buyer account and see how many potential buyers backed up and chose not to make an offer or bid due to this buyer block?
Has eBay ever given a reason why this crazy program is being rolled out instead of just getting rid of the buyers that don't pay?

Never received a memo nor is there much information in the help files or anything in the seller announcements. However, many of the same issues are starting to arise for the new in advance payment method that have existed for years with the BIN IPR listings.

My guess is that the buyers that were placed into the test pool received no more notification that the sellers that had the option unilaterally turned on for them.

Highly doubt it but from some of the postings on this forum there is some buyer revolt starting to arise.

Have you ever seen eBay do much to clean up the bad buyers? Maybe once they get a taste of it through the EIS program due to scams, bogus returns........ maybe they will take a closer look. As for the non-paying buyers it's a mix. Unlike BIN IPR where you know the buyer is sitting at their terminal or on the app when they make the purchase a lot can happen during the time a bidder places a bid and the auction actually closes. While there are the sport bidders there are always natural disasters, deaths, family emergencies......... that may prevent a bidder from paying. I have had several of those cases when the buyer later contacted me and they ultimately purchased the item(s).
EBay never has been the best at implementing changes and I am glad this feature is still in a test phase. At least the sellers can turn it off I don't believe the buyers have that option.

·2 years agoWhen I confirmed payment method on a listing, I was a little confused. Was this just to confirm the buyer is an eBay member and their payment method with eBay or an instant payment process so eBay can get their money quicker along with seller?
I found out on a low dollar item I bought. Instant payment in process! Thank God I did not buy something more expensive because my funds that I selected would have covered the payment. I would guess that I would have hit with additional fees for NSF.
I removed the payment requirements from my listings. Yes, it would be nice to get paid faster, but I can also see where maybe it could push people away from buying who may want the item but need a few days to pay.

@steve_stuff
If you keep the blocks in place, you will be told (for offers only) which buyer is to be immediately charged. That way, if you live in fear of a non-payer, you can accept the $50 offer from the buyer that will be auto charged, and decline the one for a $100 from a buyer who has yet to be forced into the program. You will never know a buyer was going to make a $150 offer, and was interested in making additional offers on more of your listings declined to participate. Likely, they know after being fooled the first time.
With bidders, you don't know if the buyer is forced into the program or not. I would say a good indication would be multiple listings paid separately at full price including shipping. Sellers who do not know what is up think the buyer is stupid, and won't ask or wait for an invoice. Do you think the buyer surprised by the true meaning of "New Smoother Checkout" will be back?
steve_stuff
OP2 years agoFirst of all we don't take offers so that part doesn't affect us.
"New Smoother Checkout" message
Is this an ebay message that was sent out to everyone or what buyers see when they try to bid/offer.
When we buy our next set of inks we'll have no problem if asked ... force to add info.
We're said it before, when managed payments was started it should have been dealing with payments both ways - from buyers to MP, from MP to sellers - Ebay should have added buyer's payments info from day one.
And as ebay already has our and every other seller's banking info, if they had done this right, any seller trying to buy would just need to confirm that info. Only 'buyer only' people would have to enter it - once.
But this is ebay so they do it half right the first try.
