Pre election sales slump?
Even I am still holding my breath. If I am like anyone else I don't want to buy anything until I know where the economy is going. A sales slump in my field of items but casket are still selling like....well caskets! Happy belated Halloween everyone during this pre-election blues tune!

·1 year agoIt's interesting that people that aren't happy with yesterday results are the ones that are very supportive of eBays return policies.
Ebay has a pretty liberal policy. 🙂
Or wait the two people that seem pretty disgruntled the ones constantly creating complaint threads. 🤔
sakic92710
·1 year agoYour theory is wrong. I don't support the return policies & am disgusted by the election.

·1 year agoMy theory isn't wrong lmao.
You proved my point.
sakic92710
·1 year agoYour point was that people who didn't like how the election turned out are the same people who support eBay's return policies. Since I do not support the policies, you are incorrect. Also - you don't know me, so you have no idea that I do not support any politician or party. My viewpoint on the election is that people who break laws need to be punished for it. Not put on people's shoulders like they are some kind of hero.
mam98031
·1 year agoI don't get it either! One has nothing to do with the other. One is far more important than the other.

·1 year agoWho broke laws? You're spreading false information. The Letitia James case, which was fraud committed by AG, is on the verge of being thrown out by the New York Appellate Court, and, there's a very good chance James will be disbarred.
I'm not bringing politics to this eBay forum, but I'm definitely not going to let you spout your nonsense unchallenged.
Quit whining and deal with it. Trump is President-elect. Besides, you should worry about rampant socialism destroying your own country. Also, if you're emotional now, imagine next year when Pierre Poilievre replaces Trudeau.
robbie31415
·1 year agoThat's true only if you take what I said out of context and don't account for the second part showing that isn't what I actually believe.
More indicating the hypocrisy of your lack of support for eBays liberal policies.
But I guess you do what others on your side do. Take people out of context. Gj.

Probably going to take a couple of years to unwind ~some~ of the economic damage incurred over the last 4 years if they start with government spending right off the bat. Orange Man has the right company to kick this off.

You have every right to be upset, and you did your part. The truth is that the majority of the citizens that voted and has made their choice. The choice was made (from across the spectrum) knowing what the President Elect was up against and still voted him in. Maybe it's time to stop the hyperbolic rhetoric and start healing as a nation. No one is moving to Canada. No one is going to lose their civil/human rights. It is going to be ok as it always is every cycle. Relax. IMHO
Give it some time and hopefully things get better for everybody. Time will tell.
You can still hate whomever you want to but your projection seems like misguided energy that could be applied to better things you CAN control. IMHO

This is America, and Republican, Democrat or none of the above, we are (most of us) first and foremost consumers.
I anticipate a fairly robust Q4 overall. Not necessarily for me, but for retail and ecommerce generally. I don't think the election results will alter that.

·1 year agoPlenty of people have looked at this – there is no correlation. You’d have to be insane to hold off on purchases to see who wins an election. I can’t imagine living scared – there’s always something coming up to make some folks nervous. Those people will never buy – They are waiting for the election, the inauguration, major legislation to pass, reelection bid, etc. Those loons will always be waiting for something. Definitely hard to behave rationally when there is always doom around the corner.

·1 year agoWhile that's true the psychological effect will happen as soon as the results are known.
mam98031
·1 year agoWell hopefully. But that is really going to depend on who wins. Now that can mean different things to different people. ðŸ˜
whitesquirrelbooks
·1 year agoAgain, in my years of doing this, it happens every time. Doesn't matter who is running or who wins. It is purely psychological and who wins doesn't matter in the short term of the lack of sales. 1/2 the country will be happy, the other half won't be. That's better than 99% of the country not buying anything until after the results. 🙂
Long term affects of who wins is a completely different and unrelated matter. But this thread is about the short term election sales slump, and it is very, very predictable if you have past data going back 20+ years. That's why I'm not worried. Yeah, it stinks to not have many sales, but it's the calm before the shipping storm hits. 🙂

·1 year agoMy 2 cents: Been tracking sales since 2008, and every 4 years, during an election year, no matter who is running, sales slump mid/late Oct until early November. The anxiety of a presidential election makes average consumers not want to spend money until after the results, even if that doesn't make financial / logical sense. Even Delta Airlines in their latest SEC filing said they expect less travelers over a few week period as they have mapped the same behavior over the year. It may not make a lot of logical sense as people will have the same amount of money on Wednesday as they did on Tuesday, but it does follow a very specific pattern I have seen in my sales and other industries have seen in theirs.
This year the anxiety feels stronger, which may translate into a steeper sales slump. But I predict the Veteran's Day weekend will be quite busy for us sellers. 🙂
If your Death Pile is still as high as mine, this is a great time to focus on that while one doesn't have to "worry" about packing so many orders daily. 🙂
fbusoni
·1 year agoI'd imagine that there is a tremendous amount of tension across US households during that particular time frame... fussing and worrying about one's Halloween costume, for example. Never mind about the decorations in front of the house. Its usually covered in the NYT and WSJ.
And then there is that sugar overload from trick or treating ... no surprise that national anxiety goes through the roof! (I know, sugar does not stay in your system very long... but people eat a LOT of candy over a period of many days.)
Curiously, I tend to do very well during the time frame you cite. I reckon its because I sell to buyers who are older, wealthier, have adult kids who are no longer at home to pester the parents about Halloween costumes... and who know all about the dangers of sugar consumption. 😊

·1 year agoPeople do not quit buying in "crazy economic times". Sellers need to just find out what is selling to make a dime and buyers can't just sit and wait to buy - like your heater or a/c went out or like when my keyboard on my PC went out yesterday at 5 PM got a new one at Wallyworld back in business by 6 PM. We will never know exactly when our economic ship will get righted. - the recession of 1981 took about 4 years (a bit longer for those in the crude oil states) to get back to the former "good times" Those folks in Florida and North Carolina have a "huge" problem to try to get back to something called "normal"
mam98031
·1 year agoWe are NOT in a recession. Comparing us to the 1980's recession is just not realistic or even close to our current situations.
And YES of course those hit back to back by two horrific Hurricanes will take many years to get to what will become their new normal. Not just in North Carolina, there were a few other states that were hit hard too.
mam98031
·1 year ago@richards*collection
Any change to our Economy isn't going to instantly happen once the election is done. I mean maybe the stock market, but that has a short term affect on some people, it will bound back.
Whomever gets voted in isn't going to affect the economy until months after they take office.
I do however understand and respect the unsettled feelings that many are going through right now. A lot is at stake. Hopefully before this time next week we will have answers. It is unlikely we will have them on Tuesday as there will still be too many votes that haven't yet been counted. The process for many states was slowed down since the last election for various reasons.
inhawaii
·1 year agoJust my opinion...
I don't think the pre-election has anything at all to do with sales, good or bad.
Half the country thinks things will be better if one candidate wins,
the other half of the country thinks things will be better if the other candidate wins.
If I want something on ebay, i'm going to buy it, not wait to see who wins the election.
Although I don't think they are related, I hope your candidate wins and your sales pick up!

·1 year agoI highly doubt the election is going to stop buyers who are looking for deal or want specific items from buying. I think that most regulars on Ebay will buy what they want or need. Prices will not change overnight. Shipping cost will remain the same if not go up. Ebay fees will remain the same. The only thing that might make a difference is if someone were to get laid off from work and they have to watch what they spend.

·1 year agoSome items/categories make more sense to buy or to wait on the sidelines. It is a buyers' market (for my categories) with many great deals. There may not be another slump like this for some time so i look at it as an opportunity to stock up for the uptick. YMMV
I am anticipating a strong recovery and at the prices items are being listed for, i can't stay on the sidelines and watch.
Hope your sales pickup soon.
