Phone used for business will be out for over a week. Will it cause problems?
I use a landline phone for all of my business, it has been down since Monday and the repairman said it may be out for around five more days. Since this phone number is used for pretty much everything I do on Ebay should I be concerned it will cause any problems? I think my main concern would be if Ebay for some reason tries to call me and they find out I have no phone set up their system might think I'm not verified or something and restrict my account or put my funds on hold. Does this sound unlikely, or possible?

·3 years agoI really don't think the OP should have to justify why they have a land line and what they use it for. That's their business.

Back in the day when we had a landline, it took well over a week to fix a problem that turned out to be corroded underground wiring. Why AT&T buried phone lines in a wet area with a high water table and months of damp and rain is beyond me.

·3 years agoThere are many places in the USA that only a landline works. Antiquated yes but cell service is not available nationwide. There are over a hundred dead zones just in the small county we live in.

·3 years agoThere is still an advantage to having a landline as it will work without power. The disadvantage is the phone companies are no longer working to maintain the vast intertwined system of wires and poles.

·3 years agoMy wife and I travel often in areas where there is no Cell service and no GSP available.
Rules of the road are, 1) Don't get lost. 2) Don't get a call from ebay.

·3 years agoEbay has called me twice since 1998 and once because I asked for the callback. Relax. If a buyer wanted your contact phone number, you would get an email. IF this happens , you can always call the buyer by using someone else's phone.

·3 years agoWOW! worried about ebay calling and getting into trouble. This is a joke, right? Of course not a joke. Ebay rules the world so we must all cower down into our corners, shake and shiver waiting for that once every 5 to 10 year phone call from our fiereless company leader.

I don't get it..... I don't do anything on eBay that uses a phone. Who do you call and who's calling you? If you are called I doubt the caller will get a recording saying the number is defunct or no longer in service. It will say it is being repaired or something to that effect.
I’ve been on eBay as both buyer and seller for nearly 20 years. I’ve never received a call from eBay that I didn’t initiate.So I don’t see any reason why you would be concerned that your phone it’s out. Most communications come through eBay messages.
What I find interesting is you actually have a landline. I got rid of mine years ago.

·3 years agoVery unlikely unless you were to request a callback from CS. If you needed to do that you could either add your cell as someone else suggested, or wait to request the callback after your line is fixed. Plus there are CS chat options and social channels if needed.
Bottom lining it: I wouldn't worry about it.

Has eBay ever called you? I've been selling on eBay since 1999 and they have called me exactly twice. So I think that the chances of eBay calling you, and that leading to problems, within the next 5 days is very unlikely.

In 23 years I've called them maybe 3 times.

·3 years agoI don't think you can put in a secondary number. You'd have to replace the current number, then change it back later.

But as I said above, unless you need to request a callback from CS during your landline downtime I don't think you need to worry about it.

@mozartbach1971 : Can you elaborate here on what several people are wondering about: What exactly is it that you're using your phone for regarding eBay business? Do you mean that it's a DSL or phone company Internet connection?

OP3 years agoI'm mainly concerned about just Ebay detecting something wrong. I know it's not likely, however ever since Managed Payments started I've been seeing a lot of posts from people who say they've been selling for over 20 years with great feedback and are suddenly barred from selling, or posters who say their funds are being withheld because they need to verify additional information, etc. So I'm just a little concerned it may cause some issue. I also need to worry about my checking account and credit card accounts that are set up to this landline phone. Every now and then when I do something on my computer and then try to log into my checking account the bank for my checking account sends a call to my landline number with a verification number to put in, so this could happen. Does anyone know if there is a service where I can have all the calls to the landline number be forwarded to my cell phone, until they fix this problem?

·3 years agoIf eBay wanted to verify your info @mozartbach1971, you'd receive an email from them asking for info. If that happened during your landline outage you could easily add your cell # to your account. I think you're overly concerned about a non-issue when it comes to eBay.
As for your bank and credit card, sounds like it would be a good idea to add your cell # to those accounts if you anticipate having to log in and verify during the next week. If you don't plan to log in to your checking or credit card for the next week then don't worry about that.
You can forward calls from a land line to a cell, but your land line typically has to be active to accomplish that.
Dial *72 from the land line.
Enter 10 digit cell number
Press #
End call forwarding by dialing *73 from the land line.
On the other hand, if you have phone service through a cable or internet provider, you can generally access certain features online like accessing voicemail or setting up call forwarding. So it depends what kind of land line service you have.

I've had them call me back on requests, the last time I remember they called me without asking was when they told me I would have to go into managed payments. I do remember somewhat recently that I received a message from them saying they needed some verification and they would send a number code to put into their system, my phone was out that time and I had to resolve it the following morning. I think the repairman said he expected it to be five days, however he said I should call my phone service to get more information.

Could there be a problem? possibly......but there is nothing you can do about it, unless you have a cell and want to change the number.
