Paying for shipping label when buyer pays.
Summary: sausage_rocket questioned why they end up paying for shipping labels even though their eBay listings state 'Buyer Pays' for shipping. Multiple participants explained that while the seller initially buys the label, the buyer's payment, which includes shipping costs, reimburses them. It was suggested to review order details to better track these transactions. sausage_rocket acknowledged the learning curve, given their previous experience with another platform, and thanked everyone for the clarification.
I suspect this is a sort of obvious, boneheaded question, but I'll stick my neck out and ask anyway -
I have all my items listed as "Buyer Pays" Yet the last few sales, I've had to pay for the shipping label.
After the first time, I went back through all my items, and made sure it was set so the buyer pays shipping.
Then when someone bought an item of mine earlier today, once again, I'm paying for the shipping label.
I assume I'm overlooking something.
Thank you!
Darrell

·3 weeks agoIt appears everything you've sold within the past 90 days has been buyer pays shipping.
Haven't you always purchased shipping labels for your packages?

OP3 weeks agoHonestly, I thought I hadn't. I didn't recall doing so. But then I'm bothering with eBay out of neccessity. Do to some personal circumstances, I'm trying to create additional income. With added stress, sometimes cognitive capacity is impacted. Memory goes first.

·3 weeks ago · EditedSo sorry to hear that.
Maybe create a checklist of what you must do when an item sells -- package the item, purchase the label, ship within your handling time, etc.
Remembering each step and keeping track of what you've done may remove some of the stress.
You can see the Order Details for each sale, including what your buyer paid for shipping, on your Manage All Orders page.

·3 weeks agoyou received the money from the buyer to pay for the shipping. Sellers are required to purchase the label. Im curious, when you looked at the order details, or even just the paid total, didn't you wonder why you received that extra money?
sausage_rocket
OP3 weeks agoI didn't see that. Where do I see that breakdown in detail. Again, I'm coming to this after years of selling on Reverb, so I have an unconscious bias or expectations. It's a learning process.

·3 weeks agoGo to the item sold, click the "view order details" , then navigate to the far right, might need to scroll down, under payments, and you will then see what your buyer paid for shipping...hopefully it is the same as you bought the label.
Remember you do get charged 13% FVF on that label, so account for that in the items price or when listing add $1-2 handling. Handling just gets added to the shipping, your buyer will not see any added separate handling charge

·3 weeks agoEasy!
The buyer pays you for the shipping (whatever you asked for on the listing).
That money goes to you.
You use that money to pay ebay for a shipping label.

·3 weeks ago · EditedVery simple to understand:
In the sales order the buyer pays YOU for the shipping, so that YOU have the funds to purchase the shipping label and send to THEM the item THEY purchased... end of story.
If the shipping is free, it does not mean that no one purchases the service. It is supposed to be rolled into the seller's price for the item, and the seller purchases the label.
Yes it is obvious, but it is not boneheaded. You'd be surprised how many new sellers think that the buyer purchases the shipping and then somehow their item is automatically mailed to them without the seller purchasing the service.

·3 weeks agoWell, yes: the buyer pays you for the label; you buy the label. If you review the buyer's total payment, you will see that it includes your quoted Shipping charge.
If you offer Free Shipping instead, you still have to buy the label, but the buyer does not pay you for it as part of his purchase.

·3 weeks agoYou are confused, customer pays for shipping. When you print label on EBAY you are using "customer's money" to pay for that label.

·3 weeks agoTry looking at it this way @sausage_rocket , who is actually shipping the item out? Who actually needs the funds to pay for the shipping when they ship the item out?
Looking at it that way makes it easier to realize that the buyer HAS TO pay YOU to purchase the shipping because YOU are the one that is actually shipping the package. So yes you would literally pay for the shipping label HOWEVER your BUYER has PAID you for that shipping label, therefore it is no actual cost to you but the fees you pay [which you should be rolling that cost into your product price].
Does that help?
