PAY WITH MONEY ORDERS

So, my question is directed to eBay about the new tax law. Why not let the sellers and buyers return to the the way it used to be, Pay by Money Order.

This would give the selling power back to the seller who has old stuff around the house that no longer has a history on original purchase. What right does anyone have to take from the person that will never sell big and does not have a business. Yes, I sell odds and ends with no history on my items and I might get lucky enough to sell more than $600.00 worth in a year. The old way of Money Order was the best for the small person.

Why not help us out eBay????? Bring back the Money Order

Whether the buyer pays with cash, paypal, peanuts, beads,check or money order, sellers are supposed to report EARNED INCOME.    Anyway, ebay did away with money orders and checks inorder to help curb scam sellers.  Plus ebay gets a cut of the payment.  Buyers like the security of the online payments. They get their items faster.  It will NEVER go back to money orders and checks.

You are a fool to not sell because you don't want to report any earned income.  That is like not wanting to get a job because you don't want to pay sales tax.

Most mom and pop sellers will not make a profit on the majority of the household items sold. You just want to get rid of stuff you no longer use. Get a note, jot down the price you paid for an item.  Of course , you won't get 65.oo for those used  Reeboks but you will get 25.00.   In your book , this item is a loss.   Your Ebay fees were 12.9% (at least) + 30 cents.  Facter in 10.oo for shipping (a guess).  You add in something for shipping supplies, etc.   So what you have left over is what you earned.    The original price was 65.oo.  You did NOT earn a profit on this one.  No taxes due.

The problem is adding up all of those numbers.  You can find all of your ebay fees on MY Ebay. If you print through Ebay, they also have the amount that you paid in shipping.  It's done month by month. You will have to do some math.    Add something for the cost of supplies , boxes, printer ink, tape, etc. etc.  The total of this is an expense.    Deduct ALL expenses from the Money that Ebay paid you.   Whatever is left over, is your earned income.

Get a notebook and starting in Jan. , write down the totals month by month.  Money paid, ebay fees, etc. Start saving all of those receipts for boxes, tape, items bought, etc.  If you don't have receipts for the older items,  try and put down a ball figure.  It's not that hard .

You want to go back to the days where a buyer could send a money order and never receive anything with no way to recover their money? It's never going to happen!

@bmgamblin

So you're saying by paying with a money order it helps with being a tax cheat?

I hope they never bring back any sort of payment through the mail again!

One has to wonder how much the United States' budget deficit would be if it weren't for all the deadbeats.

Good point. Between that and the folks on lovely social media who claim "I would gladly pay more in taxes," but never make a direct contribution to the Treasury...all grandstanding.
