Order discount vs Markdown/Sale
Can't find if this question was asked here before, perhaps it is a general marketing question.
Is there some recommendation on when to use order discount vs markdown sale?
I offer 25% discount on any sale volume and it runs 30 days. I could do same with Markdown.
When I read on the marketing stuff it says a markdown is to get rid of seasonal items that need to move out of the inventory. So if the markdown offer expired, I no longer would sell the product (e.g seasonal).
On the other hand discount just runs for a period of time and at the end the price of an item is going to go back to where it was before.
What I find interesting is when I ran a Sale + Markdown it generated higher sales than when I did offer a same amount of discount. That said, it may be just coincidence since I only have quantity of 1 of each SKU on sale and these two offers were not ran in parallel but rather one after the other, so different month could be different sales. I do have about 200 items running with that specific promo.

·3 years agoIt's really up to you, you can use either. I personally think of Sale+Markdown as a temporary price reduction, ie; running a sale. I use it for short term sales such as a Holiday sale or an end-of-season sale. For me, this type of sale does not generate many sales, I've just never had luck with them (and I've used them on/off for more than a decade).
I also have a promotional discount that runs all the time for purchasing a certain number of items & that is also used sparingly. But it very much depends on what you sell, price point, etc. Your best bet is simply to experiment & find what works best for you, since every situation is unique.

OP3 years agoI sell both used and new. The discount applies per item not on order level, so how do you think the multiples purchase affect the choice of the one or the other?
