Opened a case on a buyers return not receive.

I need to refund today, but then opened a case on the matter and now I can't seem to finish a refund. Have I just screwed this up?

Typically eBay gives a grace period for the seller to issue the refund AFTER the return arrived to the seller, never before. I think the grace period is 2 days I think, I forget. So it’s weird that OP is saying they “need” to refund today. I know eBay sometimes tries to scare and mislead the seller to prematurely issue a refund before the return arrives. It’s a shady tactic and they use scary words but they used to try it on me many times in the past. This might be the case here, I’m not sure. Screen shot please?

Who paid for the return shipping? If it’s the buyer, then they are responsible if the return doesn’t arrive to you. If the seller paid for the return shipping, then you are responsible to refund the buyer regardless if the return arrives to you or not.

Shouldn't have to refund until tracking shows it was delivered.

That's the problem. It shows it was delivered, but it was not in my mailbox when I received notification from Ebay.It took too long for PO to supposedly get it here as it went from Seattle (where mail distribution would go for my area), to going back to Dallas where it came from! Guess I'll just have to take my lumps regarding the refund that's going to be late. Thank you.

If tracking shows it’s delivered and you don’t have it yet, sadly you’re responsible for issuing the refund in time. You might get slapped with a higher penalty if you don’t and the buyer decides to have eBay step in.

If I were you I would issue the refund (sadly you’re responsible for aren’t able to inspect the item beforehand) and just hope the package arrives to you and the item inside is still in the same condition (or not a brick).

I ask again, did you provide the return postage or did the buyer? If you provided it, I would have more assurance that your return will arrive to you eventually. If the buyer provided it, sadly some are clever enough to game the system and you may run risk of not receiving the return back. I’d say that’s a small chance though.
