ETA: I think AI crafts the response to the bias of the prompt - I can make it say anything because all it does is pull from the rubbish heap called Teh Internets.
But I have no idea what the forums here will do - I've been sanctioned for jokingly expressing non-conservative views - I don't dare going on the progressive side. Maybe it depends who is on shift that day?

·2 months agoMeh, who cares, their days are numbered. AI won't get its widdle feewings hurt and send us FINAL WARNING!! messages. Honestly, I'd rather be piled on by every single one of my dear leftie friends here than continue to be threatened (oh the irony!) with "time out" because a bunch of nincompoops can't even read the posts they're calling disrespectful or threatening. I've never threatened anyone anywhere online in my entire life. Even in real life the most menacing threats I've issued have been to my kids and involved the loss of gaming privileges over homework that didn't get turned in.
I'm betting they just use their magical little erasers and do what they usually do...disappear the whole exchange.
How does one even get a job as a moderator and not know what "cool off" means?? Pretty sure even Koko the gorilla knew what that phrase meant.

The lack of consistency is what really chaps my hide. The humans babysitting us here don't even try to hide their biases.
I had a really interesting "exchange" with Google's AI recently. I asked it why it was so biased in favor of progressive policy and here's what it said...
It'll be a cold day in hell before any of our babysitters here even consider the possibility that they're doing the very same thing. We all have of biases, but at least AI knows it has them.

·2 months agoThat's a genuinely neutral answer. What about it is conservative? That's the answer you get from an intelligence devoid of emotion or an agenda.
A conservative answer would have been full of insulting monikers for each of the groups outlined as being responsible for influencing the way the AI answers questions.
For example, one of the greatest embarrassments of my life is the decade I wasted in academia amongst navel gazers and fart sniffers (conservative position). 😄

Where's the best place to get the right answer? Generally not ebay employees of any sort. It has to be the forum. Getting rid of older posts will mean forum answers will have a better chance of being current. Maybe the new forum is designed to be easier for AI to read/view it.
Yes I am pretty much making it up as I go along but who knows.

This is actually a good point in my opinion. Some older threads with a Solution accepted may not even apply anymore if policy, feature or functionality has changed. For myself, about the only thing I have gone back in time to see again are a series of "Giving credit where Credit is due ... (subject)". I created them to compliment something positive about eBay ... I will have to review them, some may not apply any more if something they referred to changed so no value in having them in the new forum space.

So for example a thread started Dec. 29, 2022 would not make the cut, even if it had discussions and thumbs-ups going on past Jan. 1, 2023.

Good question, I am erring on the side of caution. If I decide to bring certain topics forward I will copy the title, original date and OP and paste them into a word doc. Then I know for certain it will be brought forward if I decide to create a new thread in the new platform space. I just hope I don't have to reformat them to avoid a potential HTML posting error which I occasionally see here.
In my humble little opinion, of all the thousands of threads and subsequent thousands of replies from more than 3 years ago there is probably only a very small percentage that are important, relevant or of interest to most members.

·2 months ago@mr_lincoln I know one thing I'll need to take a long look at is the photos I have uploaded here, to see if there are any that I would like to keep, and this is the only place they currently exist.
I already have to do some 'culling' once in a while because I am such a ridiculously prolific photo/screenshot poster that I reached my 3000(?) photo limit about a year ago. 🤣 Up to that point I hadn't even noticed the My Photos feature on my profile page, but that limit notification got me digging, found that feature, and saw that I could delete old photos to make room for new ones. It's quite a pain in the butt (takes forever for the page to refresh).
Anyway that first time was such a joyful occasion, because I previously believed I had lost all photos of my very first eBay sale (Cy, my pickled cyclops piglet), as well as the 2 'purse' photos of a hilarious scam buyer situation that never fails to crack me up (foul-mouthed scammer tried to cuss me into refunding her for an alleged porch pirate theft, where the thief (allegedly and inexplicably) ripped the box open at the scene of the crime and left the box -which I wouldn't be responsible for even if it was true. But the best part was her sending a photo of the ripped-open box to "prove" her claim ..... and you can see the red purse right in her photo, behind the box.

I have to "cull" my 3000 images several times a year. I am a high screenshot & image user. However, I work from my computer picture file(s) and screen shot file not the Profile Photos file so I actually have all the ones I want for the next platform ...
I am sure you know that when you delete old images Khoros goes back through all the threads those images were posted on and deletes them off the thread. So, back to the older thread subject and those with images that have been removed will have less meaning.
So, while a picture is worth a thousand words, in this case around a hundreds words without a picture is meaningless ... or is that trying to be too clever?!?

·2 months agoI'm mostly hopeful about this. The main thing I like the sound of is the idea of streamlining -as long as they mean ditching so many special-topic subforums. That's an ancient format, about as old as eBay itself. And made even worse by moderators having limitless individual discretion to decide whether an OP's forum choice 'sticks' or not. If everybody used only the exact subforum to post about their return, payment, tech issue, or whatever, why would there even be a need for ones just called 'Selling' and 'Buying'? As it stands, those two get the vast majority of posts, and replies. If you post a topic-specific question in its "appropriate" subforum, you get way less eyeballs and help.
Oh and I REALLY hope there's no more Mentors forum. -No offense to Mentors at all; I think it's unfair to everyone that only you can reply to those posts. The OP usually gets only one reply, maybe a couple, possibly none, any non-mentor with potentially important input can't chime in, and Mentors (or at least some) must feel some amount of 'duty/burden' about it. I imagine it gets old really fast when the same newbie questions are posted day in, day out, way more frequently than in Buying/Selling (which is bad enough).

·2 months agomy guess is the new discussion board will be 100% AI moderated. Why pay humans to do a job that AI can do.
I think the next step will be to just completely eliminate the discussion boards and replace them with a box to ask ebay AI your questions instead of relying on humans to answer them.
That way you would always get the correct answer

Lets hope they do not try to "roll their own".
The decision of what it looks like is likely to be based on what some Ebay middle manager thinks will allow him/her to build their empire, and we who use it will need to adapt in many ways.
On the internet, nothing gets better when it is "improved".

And why are you trying to warn only "sellers"?
These community pages include many many communities and subcommunities.
Personally, I'd like to see additional available "reactions", rather than just Helpful. Some regular posters here -- you know who you are -- are part-time comedians, so I'd like to see a "Ha Ha" or "Laugh Out Loud" reaction.
As for the four or five day read-only phase, anybody who has been involved in any kind of a program rollout may well have experienced glitches that nobody ever imagined, or bugs that nobody could detect in advance. I think that read-only phase is planned for those unknown problems to arise and be handled.
I'm looking forward to seeing what's new !!

The thing that I am most proud of in my long life are the 265 stand up comedy 🎭performances I made when I was 42, 43 and 44 in every comedy club, nightclub, disco and dive with a stage for comedians that would let me on to do my act..in New York City and the surrounding areas, boroughs and suburbs, Etc., etc., etc. Even traveling to New Jersey, Brooklyn and Long Island.
That was such FUN! I can still hear laughter, hanging out with the other comics until 4 in the morning every night and only thinking about, “Is it funny?” Writing ✍️ my own act.
I’m kinda sure on my Deathbed I shall remember this most fondly.

·2 months agoThank you for your interest in my comedy act that I performed almost 40 years ago but unfortunately I don’t have any tapes of it from way back then and of course now I’m 81.
I do have a headshot from then (when I was pretty) that I left in the comedy clubs and I ran into a fellow comedian a year ago and I taped him talking on the street outrageous as he was so broke that he was now collecting cans from the garbage. 🗑️

·2 months agoGee! All the really famous comedians were performing at the same exact clubs that the newcomers like me were playing in too. We all knew each other and each other’s acts too! We were all trying to get anyone in the clubs, other comics, audience members and even the waitresses to laugh! We all had our moment in the spotlight alone with the microphone 🎤 on the stage. One nightclub only opened up the comedy open mike at 12 midnight Friday and Saturday nights. I used to leave my apartment building at 11:30 pm to go perform on my turn after 12 midnight with the others who also were on the list for that particular night. Sometimes I would go up to Harlem to 100% black nightclubs to do my act up there thinking that I should be able to got any people to laugh and I went up there to work at this challenge many many times! When the comedy clubs would close up for the evening the comedians would all go to some all night diner late at night and we’d sit around joking and laughing and talking and having an outrageous ball…kinda every night!

So what happens to all those sale listings that were created before 2023? Won't they be transferred?
Or purchase histories, sale histories, emails, and so on?
That's a lot of $$$ and back-up data to potentially disappear from many of our accounts.
And how 'bout "In an effort to create a more streamlined experience, some existing activities will not be available on our new platform"?
WHICH activities will no longer be available?
While you as a mentor may not be overly concerned, the wordings of these eBay "preview" memos seem to be overly weighted in a negative direction, which will be mostly detrimental to eBay sellers, rather than eBay buyers.
And THAT'S why I directed this thread specifically to eBay sellers.

I guess now is the time to try to remember any of those we can, find them and save them somewhere for posterity.

·2 months ago@gurlcat I suppose a good place to start for most would be to look at their own community profile for threads they've started and ones they've replied to - that's probably a decent indicator of stuff you may have personally found important enough at some point to maybe want to save somewhere.
The other thing I can recommend if you want to maybe save some of the responses from the blues or any other member in particular - when you search the community, you can put in your keywords and then filter to a select user name.
So just as an example, if you wanted to find things Devon has said about Promoted Listings, you could do this:

The new platform will involve ONLY comments and threads here in the Community Forum.
So if there's a particular post or thread you recall from 2022 or earlier that you really want to keep, you should probably block out some time to locate it and copy it, print it, save it to Word, whichever is your preference. Because after the switch-over to the new Community platform, it may be gone with the wind.
Your sales histories, purchase histories, current listings "and so on" will not be transferred to the new platform. They cannot be transferred. They were never part of any Forum in this eBay Community to start with. (Indeed, trying to sell anything in/on/through these forums is against eBay's Community Guidelines.)

Okay. . .well, that's a relief.
Except for the non-availability of earlier threads regarding eBay policies which many of us have relied upon for quotation, when newer "adventurers" or "trailblazers" (or whatever term is used now to refer to eBay "rookies") have asked us for clarification.
But those answers will still probably be floating around on Google, somewhere -- so we'll just have to rely upon some other internet service, in order to dig up pre-2023 answers.
However -- does this mean that all of us will lose our current eBay "status symbols"? I've grown so used to being an eBay "rockstar" all these years -- will we all have to go back to being "tadpoles" or "larva" or whatever the lowest form of eBay life is nicknamed?

Good questions and good humor !
BTW, it wasn't eBay who decided to add these silly labels to people here in the Community Forums. It was Khoros, the managers and monitors of these forums. And it was based only on the number of posts made by that eBay user ID. My selling ID sometimes posts here, and she is not a "rockstar."
I doubt that the labels from "trailblazer" to "superstar" will transfer over to the new Community platform. As far as I know, there may not be labels of any kind. If they do, I sure hope they don't use words like "tadpole" or "larva", but time will tell !

I'm about fed up with mods continually allowing personal bias to determine what is/isn't "appropriate" or worthy of discussion (e.g. recent thread about the lawsuit regarding Promotions). Either zap it all or don't zap anything.

·2 months agoI remember when eBay first introduced the Seller HUb, and I read thread after thread on this board bashing it primarily because "you can't find anything now".
After a couple months, I finalyl opted in and never looked back. I was quite angry with myself for letting other people persuade me to avoid what I discovered to be the biggest improvement in the selling experience that eBay had ever made.

That's almost like a deja vu reading your post. I seem to recall they were opting Sellers in early on with the opportunity to go back to the Classic view ... which I did once but then the next time it showed up I just started using it.

I've always thought that that "opportunity to go back" mechanism was offered not so much to soften the blow of having to get used to new software as to actually serve as an emergency workaround (or fallback, really), in case anyone discovered some glaring error or omission that had gone overlooked before they turned the new revisions loose on the unsuspecting populace. Testing and peer review of the code, as I have said many times, is one of those boring and yucky parts of the design process that seem to get skipped here.
To this day, I can't remember the last time I actually visited the Seller Hub itself, as I have all the pages I need to visit individually bookmarked, and I just jump right there.

If all posts before 2023 will be lost in the migration, that's a lot of helpful content - not to mention crucial records of historical issues buyers and sellers have experienced with/on eBay - that will be going down the memory hole.
If you have certain threads/posts bookmarked or wish to retain records of any conversations you've been involved in prior to 2023, I'd highly recommend becoming familiar with how to use the Internet Archive Wayback Machine at Archive.Org . 😉

·2 months agoI would like for there to be a HUGE search bar at the top of the homepage saying "WHAT'S YOUR QUESTION/ ISSUE?" in the search bar.
Then users would be prompted to search before starting a new thread. That would help eliminate the thousands of identical threads that pop up every week (ie, why does ebay charge fees on shipping? why am I receiving these offers on items I just looked at? etc)

Second: All the changes in the world won't matter if you continue to NOT post announcements about changes, and if you fail to respond to over half the queries directed at the Community Team. What we really need is much better COMMUNICATION from ebay. Just one simple example:
".... some existing activities will not be available on our new platform."
Real communication would not leave us hanging like that, speculating on what will not be available. Real communication would be " "The following activities will no longer be available:..."
And the cynic in me asks: I wonder how long they've been planning this, or is this a response to the GameStop takeover effort? LOL

I am actually looking forward to this change. I know this may not relate to all users but one thing I think this will address is new Community Members being able to find their threads when they come here for the first time seeking advice, guidance and answers to questions they have using eBay (both Buyers and Sellers).
Regardless of the board, and there are currently many, OPs post questions and receive answers from members but often seem to ghost their own thread ... or more likely can't find it.
Change is inevitable and I seem to recall going through a similar experience years ago when this space used to be referred to as The Discussion Boards and was changed to The Community. Will there be a few bumps in the road with the new launch? Sure. Will there be a few glitches that need to be corrected? Sure. Will features be added, subtracted, refined over time? Sure.

·2 months agoAyup; saw that. It seems to suggest that they're dumping Khoros. Hopefully they will not be relying on their own contract programmers for whatever the next iteration turns out to be.
