Now eBay is slowly killing sellers
I've been selling on eBay since 2009. Now eBay is slowly killing sellers by charging more fees. But it doesn't help boost sales for sellers at all. It was as if he didn't need vendors in his system anymore. He is more pleasing to the buyer. The fact that the sellers make money for them. I am very disappointed with eBay. Every time they update the system, it's going to be a higher fee every time. Why didn't he adjust the system to help sellers? Sell better stuff at a lower price. What do you think about this?

·2 years agoHere is what is going on.
The current ceo came from wal-mart. Wal-mart is extremely harsh and adversarial, mafioso-style, to their suppliers. Wal-mart constantly requires suppliers to lower their prices for items and takes a higher percentage of the sale price.
That is exactly the same identical strategy ebay is employing against sellers, because the walmart ceo guy running this place, is "walmarting" the sellers here.
Its why ebay has turned so extremely anti-seller in its policies, and why ebay is unnecessarily adversarial and punitive towards sellers whenever possible.

·3 years agoI think ebay is playing a slow long game. They want you to leave and go to other sites. So they can become popular, then ebay will buy them all, and become a monopoly again. And you have no choice or say in the matter.

·3 years agoHmmm I never thought of that.
Drive your customers away to the other sites,
then when they become popular,
buy them out and become a monopoly again.
Brilliant business plan!

·3 years agoAt the risk that you are NOT being sarcastic (which would be fine if you were, because I would), eBay is too busy buying up sites to support their vertical strategy, which has become their mainstay. If we leave and go to other sites and they become popular, one of them is more likely to buy up eBay then a vice versa. But please don't let it be Etsy.
my-cottage-books-and-antiques
·3 years ago@chapeau-noir I'll preface by saying I'm not being sarcastic here: I sometimes think that the CEOs strategy is designed to give ebay something of a moat around certain categories (we authenticate! We have the vault! etc---stuff that other sites either lack or don't have at the same scale)....and then, once they've added the rest of the categories they care about, they'll just put the whole place up for sale, and those of us (if there are any) who are still here selling in non-focus categories, well, we can stay or go, ebay and its purchaser won't care.
chapeau-noir
·3 years ago@my-cottage-books-and-antiques so strip the site to verticals and their supporting infrastructure and then sell it - that's gonna take a while to accomplish, though. Joe K. at Marketplace Pulse was already citing that there is a very high percentage of 20+ year sellers here and not enough new blood, so that would work in a way, I guess, but it might be hard to get we old fartes out of here, some of us are pretty agile. I guess we'll see.

Look up Amazon vs diapers.com
mam98031
·3 years agoThe Amazon thing was on specific types of products. FYI they can only cut pricing on the items Amazon sells, not 3rd party sellers. So is Amazon the place to go for diapers now? I am asking that in all seriousness as I'm a bit removed from that stag of my life.
That is quite a bit different that what you said in your other post. "I think ebay is playing a slow long game. They want you to leave and go to other sites. So they can become popular, then ebay will buy them all, and become a monopoly again. And you have no choice or say in the matter."
Ebay has never been a monopoly. Auctions is the only thing Ebay use to have far more of them than they do now as Auctions isn't very popular with most buyers anymore, so they only work in certain categories. Ebay has competition out there. Are they as big as Ebay, no. But other sites are growing.
mn467462
·3 years agoYou didn't do the assignment I asked you to do. But that's okay, here some free education.
Amazon is the best example of this. Jeff Bezos has tanked amazon multiple times with Amazon.
Everyone talks about the diapers.com story. Long story short, he wanted to buy diapers.com, diapers.com said no, so amazon started selling diapers dirt cheap, losing $200 million in the process, but diapers.com lost ALL of their business. because who's gonna pay $25 for diapers at diapers.com, when amazon is selling the same diapers for $5? And diapers.com ends up selling to Bezos for less than what originally offered.
They've done the same with amazon prime. Amazon lost billions in amazon prime. Because amazon made prime dirt cheap, free 2 day shipping, free movies, and discounts on everything. And everybody bought it. And in the process took away business from all the big box retailers. Because you could get cheaper on amazon, and you don't have to leave the house, deal with people, or lines, and have it delivered to your house in 2 days. Now there's 200 million amazon prime users.
And now everybody is trying their own version of prime. Walmart has Walmart+. But nobody uses it. They already have amazon prime, and they've become fully integrated with amazon prime.
Same thing with the kindle. When the tablet craze was happening, and these tablets were crazy expensive. Amazon made a cheaper tablet under $100, that was just as good as the ipad, and it came with a free year of amazon prime. Bezos lost billions on that. But ended up with way more prime users, who stopped shopping at walmart and target.
So yeah. I'm being sarcastic.

isaiah53-57
·3 years ago@hughescollectingcompany
No, ebay cant "do as they wish" - They are contract bound to manage the site to shareholder benefit - If you think they're doing that, then by all means, sell the farm and put it all into ebay stock.
And by the way, you advising this person to go sell elsewhere is, I am fairly sure, against the policies of posting here.
and finally, what you are tired of is irrelevant, "No one is forcing you" to read them - This person has every right, within reason, to speak their mind - If that was taken away, we would be living under a tyrannical regime.

Shipping has been the major increase over the last 5 years, not the eBay fees.
I dont care about the Promoted Listing fees as that is a choice to pay or not to pay.
isaiah53-57
·3 years agoYou better start caring - If you dont think ebay isnt looking to push this program as essential, then you are naive - regardless of whether you use it or not, You WILL be affected by this program - the Program itself or because of the way its structure, even the threat of the program will affect you.
Promoted items are being shown before yours - You dont think that will affect you? - If you dont think this will increase then just stay with your current business plan and see how it works over the next couple years
This is the future of ebay fee increases - They have pretty well maxed out their FVF's and done away with all the kudos/discounts/services etc they could axe - I'm fairly sure they are banking on the desperation and paranoia Promoted Listings will create in the market.

So I go all " obtuse" right back at them:
Hey sellers!! I haven't a clue what y'all are babbling about when you keep saying stuff about " the economy ".

We dine out often, buy whatever we want, and can even afford to hit the casino every few weeks".
We're doing just great!
So if you're blaming "the economy" it must be a YOU problem!"
It's not affecting us.
You see how clueless that sounds?
That's half the sellers on this board.
They don't care about other sellers.
They don't care about the direction Ebay is heading.
They don't care about anything but their sales.
And when their sales slump to nothing and they make the decision to leave the Ebay platform, we won't hear a word.

·3 years agoNow eBay is slowly killing sellers by charging more fees. But it doesn't help boost sales for sellers at all.
eBay makes business decisions to benefit eBay, not to benefit sellers.
If Seller A sells $1 million and Seller B sells $0, that is good for Seller A and bad for Seller B.
If Seller B sells $1 million and Seller A sells $0, that is good for Seller B and bad for Seller A.
But in both cases, eBay collects fees on $1 million.
isaiah53-57
·3 years agoThats all fine and well and apparent - Thanks for the 101 schooling - problem is, both seller A & B are being stretched thin by the venue and both are finding it harder and harder to make a living here - The sites active users have dropped from approx 185 mil to 135 mil in a span of a few years - the sites domestic market share has dropped from approx 12% a decade ago to approx 3.5% a year ago - In my opinion, there are obvious unfeasible strategies at work in this market that are rooted in unsustainable exploitation.
"eBay makes business decisions to benefit eBay, not to benefit sellers." and eventually to not benefit anyone...

·3 years agoThe playing field is level. eBay raises it's prices, All sellers pay more. USPS raises prices, We all pay more.
Ultimately these price increases have to be passed on to our buyers. One way or another
the buyers have to cover our cost increases for us to maintain the profit level we've been getting.
Nobody wants to raise prices. We all get that. We want to make money, ebay wants to make money, The
USPS wants to make money. Inflation hits at every level from bottom to the top.
After doing my taxes and comparing 2022 to 2021 with virtually the same amount of sales, When '
I saw the difference in net profits I was staggered. Either the USPS increases have to be passed on
to the buyers or we absorb it, and make less money.
I resisted raising my shipping costs to international buyers and that was a mistake and affected
my bottom line.
Losing the ability to buy forever stamps at 65% of face on ebay has affected my bottom line.
The price increases in Printer paper, Ink, Tape, Boxes, and etc has affected my bottom line. Blame ebay for raising the prices on shipping supplies is typical on these boards. But Walmart and staples have raised their prices too.
As I said above, Every issue with postage increases, ebay fee increases, Supply
cost increases affects ALL OF US!
eBay is where the customers are. If the buyers were buying our junk on a different site then we'd be smart to leave ebay and make the switch.
I'd rather let ebay line their pockets at my customers expense (After all, The buyers pay all my expenses) than go elsewhere and get a better deal on fees and make no sales.

vintagecraze50
·3 years agoEvery bit of it correct. Understand your business costs and act accordingly to maintain profit, ebay does it, Walmart Everybody HAS TO DO IT.
isaiah53-57
·3 years agoPoint One: The Playing field is NOT level - Promoted listings will see to that - The use of them, or even the threat of them, will drive fees up for sellers and push what used to be healthy sustainable business models out of the market due to inflated and desperate use of the program - Of course this will only continue to drive prices up for buyers and drive them away in droves. Healthy competition keeps prices in check - Promoted listings pervert the laws of a fair market by exploiting the human drive of "fear of loss" through means of desperation and paranoia. The more desperate the market becomes, the higher the fees go and it ends up feeding upon itself like a cancer - Its barbaric and utterly diabolical in my opinion
Point 2: Allowing ebay to line their pocket at the customers expense by you raising your prices to offset selling cost increases is exactly the short term business strategy that is negatively affecting the site and driving customers away - the same short term business plan that has reduced users from 185 Mil to 135 mil in a few years span - You can only raise your prices so much before they surpass the items value. Thats a HUGE problem on this site right now - You may get a few organic sales from the dwindling loyal user base, but anyone doing google searches for an item and seeing used ebay prices higher than new prices on other sites wont even come to ebay and have discounted it as a viable source for any commodity.
Its people thinking the way you do that will eventually make this site unusable, nonviable and irrelevant.

As for my eBay selling, i am resigned to the fees, but do not find them excessive. As for the numerous changes, i just adapt and move on. Don’t like some of them, but like selling here, so i stay.
mhosong14
OP3 years agoI just thought, in the past, eBay's fees are no more than 10% of the item's price. But now it's almost 20%, and the cost of shipping to my country is almost 100% due to inflation. Therefore, it is very difficult to sell quality products at a lower price. The buyers buy products at a higher price, too. If the cost of our products is lower will allow us to sell products at a lower price like in the past This is why It will bring many buyers back to the eBay platform as in the past and allow us to sell more.
kenneth686321
·3 years agoRaise your prices like every other business. Every single cost of running a business is going up.
Cut your promoted listings ad fee. Is it worth the extra 6-7% in expense for you? You have to do a cost benefit analysis. Do you want to sell at a higher price and put your in front of more buyers? Or cut the promoted listing fee, sell your item at a lower price but fewer buyers will see your item.
In the past Ebay charged 10% FVF and PayPal charged 2.5-3% payment processing fee. Nothing has changed.
mhosong14
OP3 years agoYes, I want to sell at the lowest price but can always be sold out. The fact, it prevents buyers from seeing my listings at all. The promotion via 5-7% did not show to the buyer, I got only 0-2 views. Usually, if I need my listing to show more buyers, I must promote via 8-12% in my category. It will allow buyers to see my products. I think it's too high. Because that's equivalent to having to pay about 30% of the fee.
vintagecraze50
·3 years agoCOMPETE with BETTER pictures, better descriptions, better storefront if you have a store. Buy one get one half price. If you are in a massively over saturated category you may have to continue to promote, but raise the price for God’s sake to survive.
vintagecraze50
·3 years agoYou know that all makes sense. Sell in higher volume you get more ebay gets more from you if you sell, but you are in this with many other’s who for whatever reason may be able to obtain goods at a lower price than you and then also be able to afford the extra promotion bump. Ebay certainly counts on that. All this depends again on how many sellers you are competing with for the same thing. If you are in a non saturated category product you can get by and do well without the promotion bump.

0.35% which is how much the fees went up recently. So $3.50 per hundred in selling price. Well except on your really high priced item as there will be a break in fees somewhere in there.

What category are you selling in that you are being charged 20% FVFs??
I August of 2020 Ebay started bringing their MP [Managed Payments] program site wide. Once you were in MP, sellers could no longer use PayPal as their processor because Ebay now performed that function. That was back when our FVFs in most categories was 10.2% and the PayPal fee was 2.9% for a total of 13.10%.
Don't forget that you no longer pay fees to PayPal of 2.9% for processing your money, so Ebay needs to be paid for that service too.

·3 years agoEbay is very slick. Because of their last fee structure change a few years ago of charging the total fee of the sale(price+shipping+tax) I paid around 35% in fees because of shipping being expensive. So I learned to stop shipping heavy items. You have to really look at the total formula rather than Ebays generic fees. And if you pay for a Store(spoiler, it's a waste of money) and other bells and whistles, even more money gone. The new slogan for Sellers...."eBAY, You'll love our Fees! And more Fees. And More Fees. 🤣

mam98031
·3 years agoYou seem determined to blame Ebay for any carrier increases we have had over the years. Ebay has zero control over that as they are not part of nor do they own any of the carriers we have available to use.
If you are loosing money it, it means one of two things. You aren't pricing your products correctly or the market just won't bear the price you need to make a profit. You may need to consider selling different items. Some research should tell you which direction you need to go.
I can do the math. Let's say you sold an item for $20 that included shipping, estimate the sales tax at 8%, makes a total of $21.60. $21.60 x 13.25% = $2.86 FVF to Ebay.
How are you paying fees on $55. Is your shipping not included in the $20? I've looked at your sold items the last 90 days, I don't see anything that is $55. I could have missed something. Or are you saying you sold something for $20 and had $35.00 on the shipping of that item?
What you net after all costs is not on Ebay or even money going into Ebay's pockets. Your payment for carrier costs is going to the carrier, not to Ebay.
isaiah53-57
·3 years agoSo if he sold this for $20 with a $5 shipping charge(same as what buyer paid) with no sales tax, his fees at 13.25% would be 3.31?

Wow - You are right @inhawaii But Im confused - how can he have a different fee if the percentage he is paying is the same??
hahaha just playing your little game...
Here is the real question, and there is only one right answer: If he owned this item for $10, what percentage of his profit did ebay take after fees and shipping on the $20 item he sold with the $50 shipping cost...
I'll give you a hint ...its 93% - you wont even be able to say it - It would be like asking you to drink poison to do so... so dont bother...but wait... a few posts back you said you like the Kool-Aid...

Here's an example math breakdown from one of my own sales that shows this:

If shipping is taking that much of a chunk out of your bottom line, you need to increase what you charge for shipping in order to cover it.
lakefor94
·3 years agoIf any seller is allowing shipping costs and the FVF on shipping costs to bite them, they won't last long in online selling or certainly won't be as profitable as they could be. They are selling and shipping the wrong items online and/or they don't know how to price.
I ship some heavy items, up to ~100 lbs UPS Ground and also some items via freight. All the FVF's have to be figured into the total price the BUYER pays or it is not worth selling and shipping. The desired margins have to be there, it is that simple.
Coming back after the fact and complaining about the venue when you knew the FVF costs upfront is petty/whiny. Makes a seller look uninformed.
Everyone does know the costs upfront, correct?
mam98031
·3 years agoSellers are NOT required to set pricing exactly to what the actual cost of shipping is to be. Sellers can add on a reasonable handling fee. A seller that knows how to price an item KNOWS to include all costs into the price of the item you are selling. Again, you should know all this stuff as you have repeatedly told us.
When pricing an item you need to consider the following costs.
Product
Shipping
Selling Fees
Shipping Materials
Overhead [if any]
To forget to increase your price for shipping to accommodate selling fees or put it into the price of the product would be a rookie mistake.

·3 years agoAs many times as it takes. Some members ignore the details being given them and ASSUME that their FVFs are that high when they use the Performance Summary on the Seller Hub. They simply don't see the breakdowns that CLEARLY tell them Ebay fees, shipping costs and taxes. While the shipping costs pass through Ebay as does the taxes, Ebay doesn't keep any of it. It is a pass through. However Ebay does charge a fee for the total amount a buyer pays as their Seller Fees.
The answers are in the details, but one has to be willing to open their eyes and mind to see them.

mam98031
·3 years ago@slyders_finds
So you think that the cost of shipping is an Ebay fee they get to keep? If so, how do the carriers get paid?
Ebay's fees are clearly stated on the site. If you are looking at your Summary Performance data from the Seller Hub, you need to look at it more closely. It clearly tells you how much you paid in Fees to Ebay, your shipping costs and taxes. Each are separate numbers, not all one number.
What Ebay is showing you here is the COST OF Gross SALES [COGS] . Not simply the fees you pay Ebay but any other costs that you had that were ran through Ebay. Because one of your costs is ran through Ebay doesn't mean it is part of the Fees we pay Ebay.
Ebay doesn't have "generic fees", their fees are clearly called out in the policy for Seller Fees.
"...if you pay for a Store(spoiler, it's a waste of money) ...", well that simply isn't true for all sellers. First you have to understand when a store will save you money. Your account is clearly one it won't. But for sellers like myself or others that list more than 251 listings every month the answer will be different.
You need to keep in mind that all sellers aren't of the size you are. Nothing wrong with your size, so don't take that wrong. But Ebay is made up of a diverse group of seller that many will have needs that you simply don't have. You need to think beyond what you need as there are many of us out there than are different than you and your needs.
Have you compared Ebay's fees to other similar sites? If so do those site offer what Ebay does? You feel the fees are high. High compared to what?

What you seem to miss here, is that Ebay did not make a flat rate fee increase (in most cases), but rather a percentage increase in fees. With inflation, we should be able to sell things for a higher price that reflects the degree of inflation, and therefore Ebay will receive more in fees. They should not have to raise the percent of their take. With inflation, would you be OK with it if your realtor said that due to inflation the commission to sell your home will now be 8% instead of 6%?

I didn't miss that. Ebay doesn't have a flat rate on FVFs, it is a percentage. I was unaware that some would need that clarified.
I'm unsure why some sellers would think they should be able to make more money, but Ebay should not be allowed to do the same thing. That way of thinking doesn't make sense to me.
