not on every listing, but some
note the "show more" and the lighter line at the bottom (not enough coffee to figure out what to call it)
this is on a pc, not mobile........ What now?

·3 years agoI just noticed this post by Devon here https://community.ebay.com/t5/Buying/We-are-testing-a-new-View-Item-experience-on-desktop/m-p/33652116#M442006
about newly designed listing page. I notice that post mentions seller information, seller description, and item specifics as important info of the listing to be highlighted. But it doesn’t mention anything about item description. So is it confirmed that eBay is intending to hide that further and further into the back of the closet?

·3 years agoI'd like to chime in here and say this change is atrocious. It makes descriptions harder to read and is terrible from a UI standpoint. I'm also a lot less likely to continue buying from this site if this isn't reverted.

·3 years agoThis combined with the eBay store quick view pop up just made some buyers required to click 3 times to view a listing description versus once.

·3 years agoI'm here because I saw the same thing and googled "ebay show more button" and found another thread that was talking about this, which also linked to this one, so I figure I chime in here as well.
Add me to the list of people that are now seeing this, and I HATE this new feature. There's also a convenient "tell us what you think!" Feedback button on the right side of each page. I clicked it, gave 1/5 stars, and told them to get rid of this "show more" button or at LEAST have an option to always show the full description.
I don't need more clicks to see things. I have a scroll wheel for this.

·3 years agoI'm seeing either SHOW MORE or last lines fade on every listing I view. That includes single line descriptions:
For now I will add garbage lines underneath my descriptions so they fade and not the information lines that buyers need.

·3 years agoI suspect this is a test applied to some buyer accounts. When I view my three example listings (and other seller's listing) in Firefox :
1. First listing has HTML and a long description, so there is a button to show more.
2. Second listing has HTML, but it fits within the vertical window, so not button and only a bit of fading at the end of the description.
3. Text only listing is three lines, but third line shows shading, even when no button is needed.

·3 years agoHey @shipscript - would you mind testing something? Add 2 line breaks to the end of your description on that third listing to see if it prevents the last line of text from fading out?

·3 years agoThe window opens larger. In my view, there is still an interior scrollbar and a "show less" button. The scroll was about one character height. But when I changed the zoom to make the font smaller, the interior scrollbar was eliminated.

I could not get the shading to show on this listing, but there is an internal scrollbar. Internal scrollbars are usually due to slow loading content, where a refresh after the page has loaded will cause the description window to open fully. Not so in this case. The scrollbar remains and there is no fading either before or after scrolling.

I had thought the test disappeared on my accounts, but it seems if I refresh the page, it may appear again (in most cases). I know what you are asking. If there are two more empty lines, the fading will occur on those empty lines and not on the actual text above it. However, I don't know if I would then be able to conclude I was seeing the test version. So I took a different listing that first showed one line dimmed. Then I added two more text lines and a couple of line breaks. However, to be able to tell It was still in the test, I revised again and added a row of dots a few lines down which are very faint, indicating I am still seeing the test version.

·3 years agoYes, exactly. If the description is short enough it is fading out text with no scroll bar so it looks like the only solution (if eBay makes that version of the test permanent down the line) is to add extra line breaks at the end.
The scroll bar and see more links are extra work but at least the info is there. The fade with no scroll is flat out obscuring text.
Thanks for testing that.

·3 years agoI'm seeing it too.

·3 years agoWhat happens with the see more link - does it expand the description within the listing or does it result in a pop up? If the result is a pop up I would one thousand percent prefer a scroll option instead of a see more button.

·3 years ago@wastingtime101 thankfully no pop up - it does just expand the description within the listing.
fern*wood
·3 years agoJust below the faded line is a 'show more ' button that expands to show the rest of my description.

Maybe Devon is off today....... Could one of y'all figure out if this is a test or permanent? Obviously, considering the way the displays are showing (message 14 and 5), some sellers are going to want to change their descriptions........ especially that almost greyed out line.
valueaddedresource
·3 years agoIt definitely appears to be based on size/length rather than a specific type of content, as I'm seeing it both in plain text descriptions and those that have custom design elements and/or images in the description.
I'm sure big name brands will be thrilled their listings now look like this:

·3 years agoWhen I look at this listing I don't see this, I see a group of photos one after the other, the way I would expect.
I'll go out on a limb and say its because I'm using a real operating system Win 7, not the temporary Win 10/11/12 etc.
my-cottage-books-and-antiques
·3 years ago@deltilogical That's what I'm seeing, and I'm not using the real O/S.....I am using Chrome, and not Firefox, if the browser makes a difference.
rosszonebricks
·3 years agoAt first glance I'd say it's because that image is making the description 'too long' so it's trying to save some space.
dhbookds
OP3 years agoI see someone else posted about it also.
https://community.ebay.com/t5/Selling/Why-is-eBay-hiding-descriptions-again/m-p/33606686#M2175631
and @rosszonebricks you are right about the length of the listing.........lots of huge pictures...... other listings I saw like it, weren't nearly as lengthy...
but question for you........
On this listing of yours........note the "lighter" last line......did you do anything to cause that? (I can't figure out how/why a seller would do it)........

·3 years ago@dhbookds I don't see a lighter last line on that listing, or any of mine. I also have a 32" monitor, so it could be a smaller screen size kicks in the 'Responsive' design changes, where pages display differently based on the screen size to try and make a better experience. I.e. tablet vs phone vs small laptop screen vs desktop larger screen, etc.
dhbookds
OP3 years agoShould have done a screen shot, sorry........ my monitor is 18" long....anymore I don't know if that is small or not...lol
rosszonebricks
·3 years agoInteresting. I'd say that it's just on the 'edge' for that responsive change, but not enough to kick in the 'show more' because that's the last line of the description so there is nothing to 'show more'.
Good to know though, maybe I'll go through and shorten my descriptions by one line. lol
dhbookds
OP3 years agoWould be an interesting test.
I have no problem with the "show more"........altho I think the "style of it" looks really dinky......every site I go to from Etsy to Walmart has "show more" in the description areas......
Don't like that lighter gray line tho.......looks "unimportant" to me.....which may not be true in many cases.
I'm guessing it's a test........lol, but who knows?
fern*wood
·3 years agoYep, that light colored line in my description threw me when I first saw it. I thought, what the heck, since it was an important line about condition. Definitely something I wouldn't want to minimize. It's bad luck for depending on which line is the designated line to show more to come if you start clicking to find the rest of the description.
wastingtime101
·3 years agoDo you get a scroll bar within the description sandbox of that listing when you hover over it? Not talking about the main page scroll bar on the right.
With all the changes to search view, listing view, profile view, etc I would not be surprised to hear this is a phased rollout and not just a test.
slippinjimmy
·3 years agoI do not see the shaded line and I have yet to see a listing with the "show more" button.
I usually use firefox, just tried chrome....no difference? 27" standard resolution monitor, Win10 Home Edition.
