There are a lot of reasons buyers may not pay which I have posted multiple times in multiple postings. Like anything else there are trade offs between auctions and BIN/IPR. There is also now the autopay feature for auctions and offers that pretty much puts auctions on the same playing field as BIN/IPR.
The trade offs are a potential increase in requests to cancel and order and increased returns or NAD's. I use the auction format almost exclusively, I have disabled the autopay feature but I don't do OBO. I get the occasional non-payer but just chalk it up as part of life on eBay. I prefer it over dealing with returns or cancelation requests.
There is a way to possibly reduce the non-payers. I am not sure if it has been fully deployed but if you enable the following in your account settings it will require the offeror or bidder to provide payment information before they make an offer or a bid. When the auction ends or you accept the offer the payment is automatic similar to BIN/IPR. To activate from your account settings go to selling preferences and click on it.
Scroll down to Your buyers and managing who can buy from you and click on the edit
Scroll down until you see the following two boxes, check them and hit submit.
There are trade offs to enabling this feature which you can find in a number of posts on this forum.

Why not. There are pro's and con's to auctions a lot of it depends on what you are selling. I use the auction format almost exclusively and have for years but I do it more from a time management perspective than anything else.
If your having so much trouble with auctions why not change to BIN? You set your price and if you like you can accept offers. I do not think non paying buyers are just limited to members with 5 or less transactions. Hope things improve for you.
