Yesterday I removed all of them so the first time in 26 years I have none to sell. Just auctions which haven't been doing so great. I'll start having people in to shop my shelves. I sold a lot at the used bookstore but hurt my knees doing it and not really getting more cash then just selling them at a buck a book.
I'm a little worried about having so much free time now. I've started gardening my shaggy beds but can't do much at a time with bad knees. REading a lot of course.

·4 months agoRelax & enjoy your free time, & try & take care of those knees!, Gardening at this point is probably not your best option, Glad your selling your books.

OP4 months agoGardening will have to be in brief spirts like a half hour or most days. Now I will certainly have the time. I'm on my last batch of around 10 things to ship and that will be the last harrah even if some of my auctions sell since I have them spaced out through the week.
Icing did help and today I water walked. I have a whole book on knee exercises for seniors though I don't get the floor exercises. It's very hard to get up from the floor without putting all body weight on your knees.

·4 months agoOnce, years ago, after a nasty crash stunt riding, I was on a cane while I recovered. I got one of those foldable ones with a shock cord as I could ride a bike but couldn't walk very well, so I had the cane folded up in my courier bag. Once I was in a crowded food court having a bowl of soup, my bag next to me, when all of a sudden I heard a "POP!" I looked down, and my cane had flown out of my bag and was reassembling itself on the floor! Two other tables were staring at this mad thing jumping around until it lay quietly, all assembled.

I hope you take some time to pat yourself on the back for your many years of service to book lovers.
I was reminded of how important bookselling is when I recently received grateful FB from someone who had purchased a favorite childhood book from me. It can mean the world to have a bit of your life's memories back.

OP4 months agoNot long ago I couldn't find a book for a customer who explained how much it meant to him and I felt terrible and offered to buy him another copy though they were $100. He said no and the other day when working with the books I found it! He was so happy and grateful to get the book and that I remembered him. That felt good.
Then the lady who said my anime was for her autistic son. I explained sniping to her and bidding her max and we were both happy it sold to her for less. She left me multiple loveograms. This is what make the tedious work so special. Never anything like that in the Arctic wasteland that is Amazon.

·4 months agoDo you have an exercise/ice program for those knees?
And...more time to go swimming!

OP4 months agoI haven't tried ice, did try heating pad. I have trouble on stairs but right now it's the leg that is so stiff and sore it hurts to get out of the car and also up from sitting and sleeping. Hubby asked why I go to bed so early and I said the pain wears me out. I broke down last night and ordered a cane which makes me feel older than my age is 64.

·4 months agoIce is fundamental - I fell hiking last December and broke my kneecap, and icing 2-3 times a day and moving around as much as I was able made a huge difference - I'm back to hiking and running distance. I did use my hiking stick like a cane during the worst of it and it made a big difference in getting going again - I understand how you feel about the cane, but it'll help right now. I don't think a heating pad will do you much good in the long run, and it may be just aggravating the inflammation. Seems that a visit to a physical therapist would help with this painful situation, but I'll stop lecturing now.
Glad you found that book for your customer!

OP4 months agoMy SIL just broke her kneecap and it sounds dreadful. I will have to look up the ice method and thank you very much for your advice.

·4 months agoIt's painful - I couldn't bend my leg for weeks, though I could walk in a stiff manner. Turns out that walking was the best thing I could do for it as it gradually brought back the range of motion.

OP4 months agoYes. You brought up swimming which I still do but have recently read that the breaststroke and sidestroke I do are bad for knees. Freestyle is better but I don't swim that way due to contacts. Backstroke is also OK and I do that. So now it will be more of a combination of backstroke and water walking. I think it does help but the bad knee is tough.
I tried your icing tip after reading about it and I think it did help! I didn't have quite as much trouble standing from sitting.

·4 months agoThat's great! You can swim with a pool noodle between your legs, just using your upper body, too - your legs are at rest but you get quite the workout anyway. A lot of swimmers use that for the upper body workout.

My mom started accessorizing with my step-father's canes after he passed a couple of decades ago. Now she needs one, so she's all set! If you go long term, shop for a couple of wooden ones with pretty handles! Good luck.

OP4 months agoThanks! I did some research and bought a metal one that is adjustable, will see how much help that will be. I'm hoping cutting way back on all the heavy lifting will help too.
