No longer a registered user, already paid, not shipped.
Summary: chris_wholesale_outlet received a warning email from eBay about a buyer who is no longer a registered user, despite having already paid for an item that hasn't been shipped. They are unsure whether a refund is required and how to proceed. Another participant shared their experience of receiving a similar notice after shipping items, noting that eBay usually advises not to ship but does not provide clear refund instructions. devon@ebay, an eBay representative, clarified that in such cases, eBay credits the seller for any transaction fees and suggests canceling the sale. cqcollectiblesshop expressed concern about potential risks after shipping a package and suggested that eBay should offer more support to sellers.
I got a warning email from eBay about a buyer today. I checked their profile and lo and behold, they are currently "No longer a registered user."
The thing is, they already paid, but I haven't shipped out the item. Am I required to give a refund? If so, how? Should I just cancel the order...how will that impact me?
Thanks.

·Aug 12, 2026 at 9:01 PM · Editedhello, i received a similar email but had already shipped the package 3 days earlier. To intercept the package i would have to pay $20. Also when i called eBay, the AI bot kept hanging up when i asked to get transferred to talk to someone about this. Am i risking my personal information (on the return label) to be at risk because of a bad actor? I think eBay should jump in with more information and also assist seller in paying for the intercept. I am worried that my name and return address could become compromised, let alone the item being sold and possibly taking a loss. This is actually quite frustrating and the first time I have dealt with something like this. I may consider not selling through ebay due to the risks involved and the lack of support for the sellers. Any suggestions out there?

·3 years agoThis just happened to me recently. The buyers are generally a problem in these cases. You can simply ignore the whole thing, but they'll likely just file a chargeback anyway. Once the payment clears, I recommend cancelling the order and refunding the buyer. They'll get their money back either way.

·3 years agoHere's the way it happened to me this month. Sold item. Buyer paid. I shipped. A few days later package returns. I check tracking. Went to P O box and was refused. I went to refund and guess what? Buyer is no longer a registered buyer. No way to contact or refund. Never heard from Ebay on any of it. I suspect maybe he never had paid for the P O box? I don't know. But, he has no way to contact me or Ebay and I can't contact him. Small item, not much $$.

·3 years agoI have received messages in the eBay Message Center stating that they had Cancelled The Transaction.
It said not to contact the buyer.
In all cases, I had shipped the package between 1 and 45 days earlier.
The message stated something about I might want to intercept the package.
I ignored that because I did not want to pay the $15.00 intercept fee.
These packages had a Delivered scan or got one a few days later and eBay let me keep the money.
If I ever get a new message and have not shipped the package, I will issue a refund. I prefer to finalize things now rather than deal with a reversal later.

·3 years agoShip the item unless eBay sends an email inquiring if you shipped or not, you won't lose any money if you do or don't.
chris_wholesale_outlet
OP3 years agoEmail specifically says DONT ship.

Bad advice.

·3 years agoIt's happened to me a few times after I shipped the item out. Didn't lose any payments. eBay didn't send me an email until after I mailed items out. So I guess the few buyers I mailed out items the buyers got them. I didn't lose any funds from them. You are rather lucky you got the email before shipping out item. Never heard from the buyers as well. What is strange is it showed items were mailed out already and then I got the emails not to mail out the items. Might be why funds were never taken back from me.

·3 years agoWow that's a really good question.
A) Do nothing. Don't ship. Don't refund.
B) Ship.
C) Don't ship and refund.
D) Don't ship and cancel the order.
Curious to see what people say and if there is an "official" ebay stance on this situation.
What was the value of the item?

To make it simple I would do D. Buyer may be NARU'ed but they could still do a chargeback which personally I would rather avoid.

·3 years agoI've gotten the notice AFTER I've shipped and never had a problem......no refund, etc.
Doesn't the notice say "do not ship"? but doesn't say anything about how to refund.......if I remember correctly.
@devon@ebay
What should a seller do? does ebay void the sale someway and refund the buyer?
devon@ebay
Hey @dhbookds! In cases like this, we will send an email to the seller just as @chris_wholesale_outlet described letting them know not to ship the item due to concerns we may have with the buyer.
dhbookds
·3 years ago@devon@ebay question concerns refund............does the seller refund or will Ebay do that.........or does seller have to refund at all?
devon@ebay
@dhbookds In this scenario we would credit the seller any fees they occured from the transaction and ask the seller to cancel the sell if it has not been done so already. The buyer would need to reach out to us for more details on refunds.

·3 years ago@devon@ebay I'm dense this morning.......my apologies in advance......
What reason would a seller use to cancel.....? Problem with address?
Can a seller cancel WITHOUT refunding? From your answer, I'm assuming a seller should NOT refund....
@chris_wholesale_outlet has anything further happened? lol.......has the whole transaction disappeared? do you still have the money?

·3 years agoI am curious about what happened with this case? Today I got a email from ebay stating they suspected my buyer of fraudulent account activity and that they canceled the sale. It said don't ship the item. I had not received a payment email notice from ebay so I thought the buyer didn't pay so no problem, right? Well I look in the seller hub and under orders it says to ship the item, its paid for and ship by 5/22. But if I click on the buyer, no longer registered. It was someone in another country that was using a well know freight forwarding address I recognized. So yes the user isn't registered anymore, but hub says ship. Also there is a payment made that is still processing. I don't want to cancel the order and refund if that payment never clears either. Its 50 bucks so not too much but still....not sure what to do. But ebay said they canceled the order and don't ship? And when I click to look at the listing, its completely vanished with the "we've looked everywhere" error message.

OP3 years agoAbout $50. Not too bad, but I'd avoid loosing it if I can.

·3 years agoMy opinion is it depends on your threshold for loss. Meaning can you afford to lose the item as well as the money? What does "payments" tab say? is the money received still processing, on hold, refunded?
chris_wholesale_outlet
OP3 years agoCurrent status is
"Processing. Estimated funds availability on Mar 15, 2023"

·3 years agoWell, it's never happened to me, but I suppose you could cancel citing 'Problems with buyer's address'. It won't negatively impact you... other than the $.30 Transaction fee, which might be credited back to you. Good luck.
dbfolks166mt
·3 years agoUnfortunately eBay doesn't give you a cancelation choice to cover this situation. I would just cancel as a problem with the buyers address or as buyer requested since they are NARU'ed. No impact to you and buyer will be refunded.
chris_wholesale_outlet
OP3 years agoI'm thinking that route. I was just at a loss since it is still "Buyer paid—ship by xxx" on my Selling page.
The email was pretty specific with everything besides the cancelation:
