·8 months agoWonder if this could result in us getting any bump in views from sellers checking out who made these quotes, @mamacassidy .
My guess: NOPE. 🤣
Oh well, kinda fun anyway.

I don't think "nobody wants your stuff" would play too well in a marketing email.

·8 months ago@gurlcat as to the context/reasoning behind this email, all I can say is it appears to me like the current Chief Communications Officer has finally decided to take some advice eBay got from an outside PR/comms consultant circa 2018 that if eBay had heeded at that time, they might have avoided multiple federal felonies, fines, and a potential 9 figure judgement that may be heading their way in a few months. 😂

·8 months agoThank you SO MUCH!!
So, I'm pretty sure I know what 2018 thing you're talking about, but how does it relate to this email? Did outside consultants recommend sending sellers puffery about how well new features were working, and they didn't? How did that culminate in the way it did?

The 🌎 world knows you now!

·8 months ago@gurlcat pretty much.
The consultants recommended several possible strategies for dealing with/countering media coverage the company wasn't thrilled about, including but not limited to things like being more proactive at addressing hot-button issues here in the community to prevent them from being raised elsewhere more publicly (eBay still has a lot of work to do on this one imo) and launching a company created "competitor" blog or newsletter - or potentially even "quietly" investing in an existing one that could be relied on to be more "neutral." 😉
Doing something like this through eBay messages doesn't accomplish one of the main suggested goals which was to have the positive/company approved source be able to push the "targeted" source down in Google search results, but that's probably a wise/safe move considering ongoing litigation. 😂
But pulling positive quotes from the community to use in seller-facing comms touting impact of policy changes or new features certainly seems to me to be in line with at least the general concept of what the consultants were recommending.
And to be clear, I'm not saying it's necessarily bad or wrong of eBay to do that and if sellers really do find changes or new features to be positive, I actually think it's great eBay is taking that feedback from the community.
I just hope they are also taking any less than positive feedback on board as well and that what they glean from community posts is being used internally for more than just credibility building for curated corporate comms.
As far as how it culminated, I wouldn't say it was a direct cause and effect sort of thing. More like if eBay had put half the effort into actually listening to sellers and addressing issues proactively, coverage about the company would have likely reflected those positive improvements....but that apparently didn't occur to the people in charge at the time who instead decided that people saying things they didn't like online needed to be "taken down....whatever it takes."

·8 months agoCan anyone take a screenshot of the message, or is it too long? I'm just wondering what the body is about. Are they only now "informing" sellers about automated feedback, which has been going on since September?

PS, I did not receive the eBay message either 🙃
gurlcat
·8 months agoWell then DOUBLE THANK YOU, because I was starting to wonder if I was the only one somehow! But I really wish we could know why not everyone received it. It makes me wonder what other messages I didn't get.

The only other message you didn't get is the one where eBay tells you they found 35 of your items that haven't sold in 90 days, and here's some brilliant ideas what you can do about it.

This is due to an annual increase in system activity experienced during this period, which has caused processing delays.
And thanks to @44012 for reminding me to post this.
