·1 month agoSellers are allowed to charge above the actual cost of shipping. There is a reason for that. There is more costs to shipping an item that merely the cost with the carrier. A seller has to PURCHASE packaging materials and pay Ebay FEES on the amount charged for shipping. In the old days this was called S&H = shipping and handling. Because no one or no company can ship just for the cost of the carrier, there is always other costs.

That right there is the issue in a nutshell. There is something YOU want to buy but it costs more than you can afford or are willing to pay, plus the postage added to it puts it over the top.
How do you determine what "retail" is? On brand new items, maybe, but on vintage or antique or highly collectible or rare or "whatever" items, the "retail" is whatever someone is willing to pay.
Do you have any idea how much postage costs these days? You can't mail anything for less than $6.00 or $7.00 now unless it qualifies to go as ESE and there's no tracking on that. Not only does it cost a lot for postage, but there is the cost of shipping supplies, i.e. padding, bubblewrap, boxes, bags, tape, label paper & ink, etc. These aren't cheap.

There are many items which cannot be successfully sold by sellers who are not buying at the very best wholesale price or a lower liquidation price.
For many mass market items, the only way to be competitive is to match the bigger stronger, higher value sellers, who are established on the site.
