EBay is sending out a message saying that in the next few months all coins for sale must be described in a narrow range of conditions, ranging from Uncirculated to Below Fine. Do you just type the required phrase in the "condition" box? There is no menu to choose from, as you would think there would be.

This just makes me so glad I'm not into coins so much anymore. It's bad enough I now have to choose from fairly arbitrary condition terms for jewelry (which the buyer may have totally different views on), but coins .... ooof.

Then again, isn't coins one of the categories they're going to (or already did) change the return window to only 3 days after delivery? Or is that just bullion?

I think this is a bad idea. I think the best way is to let the buyer determine the grade of a coin to his or her satisfaction by providing quality photographs. Although I have been a collector for 7-8 years now, I don't feel comfortable grading coins and I don't want to get into an argument with someone over the grade I give to a coin. Grading a coin can be very subjective and I think this sets up the seller to have to deal with "item not as described" refunds when it is merely a difference of opinion. If implemented I will likely give the lowest grade to my coins to avoid such hassles. I would rather underpromise and overdeliver.

I started a thread on this yesterday.

Seems like it's not possible to implement yet. In my other thread we've paged the Blues to get some answers as to when and how we'll be able to do this.

While I don't like going and changing 1000+ listings, I do like the range of grades for condition to state how circulated my stuff is. Almost everything I sell is "circulated", but with eBay's strict rules about grading, I don't want to risk a violation by describing the condition using terminology used for grading.

I suspect there will be a list of conditions to choose from with a drop down menu. Good photos seem to be the best way I would think.

Most any 'coin value' book (probably available in abundance on the interwebs) will tell you exactly how to 'condition' a coin.

Proofs typically in the 70's. Coins typically rated 1 to 70.

About Uncirculated (AU): AU-58, AU-55, AU-53, AU-50
Extremely Fine / Extra Fine (XF or EF): XF-45, XF-40, XF-35
Very Fine (VF): VF-30, VF-25, VF-20, VF-15
Fine (F): F-15, F-12

This being ebay they will almost certainly have their own standards of grading that are completely different than industry standards. That is exactly what they did when they started forcing grades onto CCG cards.

If it's happening in the 'next few months' then in the 'next few months' there will be a 'drop down box' where you choose the condition.

It's NOT now.

Like collector books were in the past, coins were UNC, VERY FINE, FINE etc.
