New automatic positive feedback policy for sellers
Just putting this out there to see if anyone else has the same thoughts…
Anyone else thinking that this new automatic positive feedback policy for sellers may have the unintended consequence of buyers leaving more neutral and negative feedback? I both buy and sell on eBay, and a lot of times as a buyer when I leave no feedback, it’s based on the idea that if I have nothing good to say, I will say nothing at all. Now, if I know eBay is just going to leave positive feedback for the transaction, I may reconsider, leaving neutral or negative feedback for a seller that I would’ve just left no feedback for at all.
For me, only about 25% of my buyers leave me feedback. As much as it can be annoying to have buyers not leave feedback, at least I know that when I do get feedback, it’s been earned by me. I feel like eBay is trying to solve for a problem that doesn’t exist. We’ve all grown our accounts slowly and over time, sale by sale, feedback by feedback. I also think the eBay automatic feedback will just dilute the account and make feedback scores more meaningless.

·2 months agoAs a small seller I get positive feedback about half the time. Usually if people have a problem they are going to complain. So I think eBay’s policy of generating a positive feedback after 30 days a big plus.I have 100% positive, and if there would be a problem,I would try to resolve it.

But no, we haven't been seeing any complaints of this, so I don't think it's been a big consequences. I haven't experienced it & haven't heard of anyone else experiencing it.

·5 months agoHave been thinking about this policy for past couple of days and think as you do --- it is not good. If buyers don't leave feedback, how can ebay assume they are happy with seller? To do so way overstates the likely actual feeling of buyers of that seller. Just made a purchase from such a seller --- this person has never left feedback for any buyer, so very few buyers leave this seller any feedback, so most all of the feedback is the automatic feedback from ebay and as consequence seller has 100% positive score. But, seller ships late, turned postage into profit center, has not yet started shipping info on my purchase when was "scheduled to come yesterday". I will leave feedback for all the issues, because I have already decided to never buy from this seller again.
jonathanbrightlight
·5 months agoIf the order isn’t received on time, it won’t get the automatic feedback. Or if there are any other issues that eBay can track and see, like any claims or returns.

·9 months agoI dont know yet. I tend not to think so. Most dont leave feedback, most dont want to or want to spend time to, much less go back and alter automatic feedback - unless there is an issue - but thats how it has been, automatic fb or not. If they are happy chances are they dont leave fb, they just use their item.

·9 months agoI completely agree. In the past, I never left a negative feedback comment for a bad buying experience, I just left no feedback. Now ebay is leaving positive feedback on my behalf in those cases. This will inherently lead to more buyers leaving negative comments; I don't think there will be a huge increase though.

It's going on two months now, and I'm not seeing your prediction come true in my own account or from any seller complaints here in the forum.
jonathanbrightlight
·9 months agoAgreed. We’ve received feedback on well over 1000 orders since this started, and none of them have been negative. At least 40 have been changed from automated to the customer’s comments, although my tracking method on that is imperfect, so it could have been more.
linenandlaceltd
·9 months agoIt's been nothing but positive for me so far. Not a single person has come back and changed the feedback at all. This way, it helps potential buyers see more positive feedback for me, which means they're less likely to have an issue with me or my items and feel more confident buying from me. I've had 39 automatics since this feature was rolled out. That's a lot, considering my feedbacks were in the 300s prior to this.

·9 months agoThe recent feedback policy introduced by eBay represents yet another move that clearly hurts sellers — especially those who participate in the Free Returns program and already carry additional costs to keep buyers satisfied.
With this change, eBay has significantly limited the possibility of having unfair or abusive feedback removed, even when the seller has done everything right: shipped on time, communicated clearly, and offered a free return option. This shift leaves honest sellers more exposed to dishonest or manipulative buyers, who often use the feedback system as a tool to pressure sellers into refunds or benefits they don’t deserve.
We sellers work hard to maintain quality, deliver quickly, and follow eBay’s policies, but this new rule once again shows that the system favors the buyer while ignoring the reality that fair trade depends on balance and mutual respect.
However, sellers still have one powerful tool — the ability to block abusive buyers. Whenever a buyer leaves a false or malicious feedback, we can and should block them from purchasing again. If every seller consistently applies this measure, those buyers will eventually face the consequences: either eBay restricts their accounts due to multiple reports, or they simply run out of stores willing to sell to them.
This isn’t about revenge; it’s about restoring balance. Sellers are the foundation of this marketplace, and we deserve fair treatment and protection against bad practices. eBay should reconsider this new feedback policy and bring back a system that truly supports honest sellers and fair business.

·10 months agoEBay is overstepping, and it is wrong. When did leaving feedback become almost mandatory. The whole point of feedback is to give customers and buyers the opportunity to leave honest reviews, if they choose. It should not be forced, which is what eBay is doing in a roundabout way. I am both a buyer and seller. As a seller, I am very good about leaving feedback for my customers; however, my customers do not have to leave me feedback. When they choose to, it has meaning, and I sincerely appreciate them taking the time to do so. As a buyer, more often than not, the items that I receive are just okay, and not packaged well. In these cases, I prefer not to leave any feedback, rather than negative feedback. If on the other hand, the seller goes above and beyond, I do leave feedback. This is my choice, as it should be. The items that you sell, the customer service that you provide, etc., will bring customer's back, not false, and forced automatic feedback.

·11 months agoI have always said we put too much into feedback scores. Sellers should be allowed to leave, at least, a neutral for buyers. Buyers have the upper hand and know they can leave negative. But, can't receive a neutral or negative it from a seller.
I like the way poshmark handles their site. Seller has 3 days to mail an item to buyer. The buyer has 3 days after delivery confirmation to look the item over. After 3 days the transaction is COMPLETE.
For poshmark, I don't remember exactly how long a buyer has to mail the item back to the seller. But, it's not long. Maybe 5 days. On ebay, it's 3 WEEKS. And, sellers have to mail the item, to buyer, within 24 HOURS of purchase.
Buyers and sellers are not treated equally.
gator08041971
·10 months ago@backpacksbymelissa
And, sellers have to mail the item, to buyer, within 24 HOURS of purchase.
False. For a couple reasons.
One: If the seller is using same day shipping, they have till Midnight that day or Midnight the next available business day.
Two: For one day handling, the seller has till Midnight of the following day to ship the item out. You could get an order Monday morning, but have till Tuesday evening to have it shipped. But it will need to be SCANNED by Midnight to count.
There is no official "24 hour" requirement. But its up to the seller to get it into the hands of the chosen shipper and have it scanned by those cutoff points.
For the whole feedback issue that some seem to have, here are my thoughts as a smaller seller:
I get maybe at best 30% of the items I sell feedback left. I leave feedback for 100% of the items I sell.
I strive for 100% feedback, but that was wrecked earlier this year by a buyer that left feedback, but didn't bother to even contact me, or even open a return. Just dropped a neg and never worked with me to resolve it. Until nearly 2 months later when they realized it was too late then I get the angry messages.
Point is, its hard to dilute that out when you only get 30% of your item sold in feedback. At least now it will be more balanced.
Good news, and I have stated this in multiple threads:

·11 months agowonder if ebay will be require to make a notation on the feedback alerting us as to if its genuine or AI auto-created feedback? Seems like it would be illigal to misrepresent a buyer/username without permission to speak on their behalf. Kind of like in the beginning of when they started promoted listings and they did not let people know if the listing was promoted or organic. They had to add the verbiage to the search view page because of the manipulated search results- you must tell people if you are forcing them to view a result that someone has paid to have their listing come up as paid advertising.... Wouldn't this be similar?

·11 months agoAnd why doesn't ebay simply ping buyers with reminders when they've not left feedback? Others do that.
siamjane8
·11 months agoThey do message buyers to leave feedback. I've gotten those B4. As a seller I've always felt that no feedback is good feedback! As a buyer, I want to see real and accurate feedback, not eBay generated fake feedback. When we purchase on eBay we are interacting with an individual sheet NOT eBay so I value their feedback history to help me decide. If I buy on Amazon, I don't care because it's a large faceless company. eBay is different that other companies and needs to act like it instead of copying everyone else's policies.
baydealz
·11 months agoIt just doesn't matter - they've diluted the system by halting negative feedback, but now they may as well fully remove it because now it's 100% positive. No differentiation, what a joke. And it provides LESS incentive for the buyer to leave feedback, since he got his. I guess it'll save a minute for those of us who do leave feedback - but I bet it's immediate, whereas I wait until delivery or after, kind of as a reminder for them to leave.

·11 months agoI am a seller (first) and a buyer.
I almost always leave feedback (99.99 positive).
When i am unhappy as a buyer (not enough to return but not really happy), I am loathe to leave negative feedback as I know how much damage it can do.
and usually, I won't even bother leaving the neutral.
However, now, I am not going to let ebay leave a positive for a transaction that wasn't that great in lieu of my neutral or negative and will definitely be leaving my honest feedback.

·11 months agoAutomatic positive feedback mostly helps the dropshippers and sellers who put minimum effort into anything, like shipping a video game in a polymailer and shipping something nice in a diaper box. Positive feedback should be an award for good service. When I want to buy something I look at feedback, if they sold 20,000 items but only have 500 feedback I stay away from them. This is a bad move from eBay...and i'm a seller that works for positive feedback saying this.

·11 months agoI am a seller. When I buy, I never leave FB positive or negative. It is meaningless to me because I neither buy nor sell anything which is essential and if a sale goes bad for me as a buyer, I will get a refund one way or the other.
I like most of my buyers, and some of them reciprocate that liking. Their FB is irrelevant. The items I sell are items people want and want to keep. Some of them use FB to tell me so, others message me. All is good.
Perhaps once a year, I have to deal with a return request.
My buyers are exceptionally forgiving of my errors, and I am grateful for that.

·11 months agoJust out of interest I re-looked at the recent feedback of the last two sellers I bought from.
Out of the last ten feedbacks - six were ebay auto’s on one with five on the other.
At that rate how long before all feedback, except perhaps the red kind, is left by ebay?
siamjane8
·11 months agoUnfortunately this was just an eBay bandaid fix to some other problem but in reality- large volume sellers that don't care about feedback because statistically (percentagewise) negs don't effect them because they have so many feedbacks- will now have even less reason to provide good service because any neg will be even less detrimental.
eBay has been putting more investment in feedback while at the same time making policy that negates any value of feedback.
It's just nonsensical.
Couple that with the new forced free returns policy in P&A and the fact that a sellers can do everything right and pay the shipping both ways and now get unjustified neg feedback!?, eBay is really screwing the sellers and the platform as a whole

·11 months agothis has absolutely no impact on buyers leaving whatever feedback they want to. absolutely nothing is changing for buyers
siamjane8
·11 months agoAgreed. This was only a way to remove some of the seller protections/ conveniences. No automatic removal if the buyer screws you with a bogus return....by default if a buying is going to rip off a seller and send a different or won't item back... Them why is eBay protecting their right to leave feedback?
Also punishing sheets that offer free returns is just an evil move.... Talk about spitting on your customer(sellers). So not only does the seller pay the initial shipping and the return shipping- now eBay says guess what you might also get a neg!
eBay is back to its old ways of despising it's sellers
jaz_zy89
·11 months agoActually I buy quite a bit and about 20% of the time I do not leave feedback because even though the quality or service or product wasn't really that good, I just don't like leaving bad feedback unless a seller really deserves it. But now I will be leaving neutral feed back for those transactions because I don't want other buyers to think that a mediocre seller is awesome due to a high number of false positive feedback.
siamjane8
·11 months ago@jaz_zy89 I can see your reasoning and imagine that other sellers will think the same...... I guess 20 years of trying to build up good feedback for exceptional service was all just a waste of time. Now it will just be a watered down waste of useless AI feedback that is of no value to shoppers. Its what ebay has always wanted- an evening out of sellers- they do not want to reward sellers for good product or good customer service or anything.... apparently that is not fair and seller should get a participation badge!
chlipp-78
·11 months agoYes, this update isn't the positive news people are thinking... they are empowering petty buyers once again. There are a lot of unreasonable people out there who will get mad simply because automatic positive feedback was left for them. They will now leave negative when they otherwise wouldn't have and it will replace the automatic positive.
But the bigger issue is sellers are losing some feedback protections as well with this update. They're making it easier for unreasonable buyers to leave negatives that can't be removed by giving them an opportunity to revise comments that violate feedback policy. They will also no longer automatically remove negatives in return scenarios when you've deducted for damage/usage... and even if you totally satisfy the customer by offering free returns and issue a full refund they will now allow them to leave negative again.
What really bugs me is not only do they nonsensically blame "global regulations" (could just make it regional), but only sellers who have had a negative automatically removed in the last 12 months will be informed of these return feedback changes in the update email. Are all sellers not worthy of hearing what protections they've just lost? They have to bury it and hope nobody will see it? Do better, eBay. Your sellers are just as important as your buyers.

OP11 months agoI do see the benefit for new sellers, where just a few negative feedbacks can really drag down your rating. There should be a mechanism for the automated feedback for those accounts (which was rolled out earlier this year I believe).

It’s not just new sellers whose % rating can be dragged down by one negative.
I suspect that there are quite a few sellers like me who have been on eBay for a long time who steadily sell only about 100 items per year.
Thus, I am happy with this change.

·11 months agoFor eBay: This might be good. Sort of makes it look like most every transaction goes off without any issues.
For a wreckless seller: This is good. You'll have a much better reputation than you would otherwise (than you have now).
For a good seller: Not so good. That reputation you built by going above and beyond to maintain in hopes of snagging a few more customers? It's going to look just like everybody elses.
rugerskick
·9 months agoYeah, again, its probably done not really for the sellers, as much as it was done for ebay to report/have better metrics about positive buyer transactions to point to.
Remember ebay never really does anything for sellers. They say they do, but they really don't.
Remember also the same time they announced this, they also took away 2 important, valid reasons sellers had for unfair negative fb removal.

·11 months agoMultiple threads are already going in regards to this topic. I am personally ok with automated feedback. If buyers aren't leaving feedback now they most certainly aren't going to leave feedback in September. If a buyer has an issue they need to contact the seller about a return. Just because negative feedback or neutral feedback is received doesn't mean it will stick. Buyers are encouraged to work with the seller. My percentage is much less for buyers leaving feedback. This is an issue cause it doesn't give an accurate rating of a seller. Most transaction go smoothly.

·11 months agoI dont think it will be an issue. Im about the same only 25% of items i ship on time and as described get any kind of feedback. I feel the other 75% could care less or even know what feedback is used for. I for one am glad to see this.

OP11 months agoI do agree that a lot of buyers won’t even be aware of the policy, therefore it won’t be an issue in that case. Thanks for the quick reply and your input!

·11 months agoI don't think anyone will change with buyers. eBay looks be be trying to dilute the feedback to help sellers with low feedback numbers keep up with having a higher feedback percentage and not losing top rated maybe?.....
If course ask they are doing is splitting the value of feedback. As a buyer who consider feedback B4 a purchase, now I have to wade through ai generated fake feedback.... This company is being hopeless. They put no effort into making the search better or the customer service better but they have every one possible working on feedback.... Makes no sense
As sellers we should be more concerned with the removal of seller protections that come with this change. Notice eBay will no longer auto remove negs if you offer free returns or receive a used damage item back and have to deduct from the return! So not only can bad buyers return a broken item to you and you lose 50%, now they can leave neg feedback to boot.... Why does eBay think making they're sellers/partners look bad is helpful to anyone?
