New $500 policy bypass: $1,700 shipping mentioned in description only?
Hello everyone,
I am a seller affected by the new policy (effective August 27, 2025) that restricts certain international sellers from listing items valued at $500 or above (including shipping) for delivery to the US.
While I was browsing yesterday, I found another seller from a restricted country who is using an unusual trick. In his item description, he wrote:
"The original value of this piece is $2500. However, due to eBay’s restriction on listing items above $500, we have listed the item at $499 and included the remaining value within the shipping fees."
My questions are:
Is it okay to list a $2,200 item for $499 and charge $1,700 for shipping to bypass the $500 limit?
Also, how can the seller get that $1,700? In the actual shipping section of his listing, he make it "Free Shipping" This means the $1,700 isn't in the eBay checkout system at all.
Any clarification would be appreciated.

·8 months agoIf the Seller you mentioned has "free shipping" that means they will not get paid $1,700 for shipping.
You also mentioned the US law restricts certain international sellers from listing items valued at $500 or above (including shipping) for delivery to the US. If that is the case, even if Seller had item priced at $499 and $1,700 for shipping they cannot bypass $500 limit (because total amount is more than $500).
