Never had a customer do this before.
Summary: onefootflipper shared an experience where a customer created a song on YouTube based on one of their eBay-related videos. Participants in the discussion were impressed and found the video entertaining and edgy. gurlcat pondered over the specifics of content creation and the generational terms used within the song, noting that the term 'Boomer' was used for effect rather than accuracy. The conversation evolved into a discussion about technology preferences, such as laptops versus desktops, keyboards, and trackpads, with personal anecdotes shared on adapting to changes in technology.
So, as some of you who follow the forum know I make videos about ebay.
One of my customers made a song out of my newest video and put it up on youtube.

I had never had a customer do anything like THAT before. That link is my customer, not my content, which I do not link to on these forums.

Best line: “Who do you hate?” “The poor.”
I watched that video last night!
They should have had a line about you tossing junk from the bins over your head.

·2 weeks ago · EditedI bet if you asked 100 laptop owners why they have one, you'd get a wide variety of answers. Considering how cheap computers became over the years (especially if you include used and refurbished), I wouldn't be surprised if there are a lot of people who own a laptop, but in addition to a desktop (and a tablet, and a smartphone, or two), but owning and using are not the same. Just last week I had to convince my friend to dust off her laptop to use for eBay because she was selling from her phone and running into the limitations of the awful app.
I'm probably someone you'd say should have a desktop, because in truth I don't travel much, in fact the rare cases I even unplug my laptop is to bring it in the kitchen to follow a recipe or cooking video. Even then the sound will come not from the crappy little speakers but bluetooth'ed to the living room pair of giant Radio Shack ones I bought after graduating high school in 1992 (I'm GenX too 😉).
Oh! One major reason a laptop is advantageous for me: I live in Mobile, the rainiest city in America, not by days/year with rain but inches/year ... inches that come in the form of severe storms including hurricanes. My power goes out all the time.
But I do need my computer to be light and nimble too, and here's why: most of my day exists on one large WHEELED table in front of my cozy chair. This is where I do jewelry restoration, photography, various tasks like bill-sorting, and yes all my dining, all with my computer close at hand and usually playing videos. And any time I want to relax and single-task entertainment, I can just scoot the table far enough away to recline and kick my legs out in front of me.
Oh btw, I can't recommend the Dollar Tree corn cob holders highly enough, for holding/sorting tiny things and then pouring them neatly into tiny ziplocs, if you need to do that sort of thing.

OP2 weeks agoI could not function on that keyboard. Once you get used to typing on an expensive mechanical keyboard you can never go back to a laptop one.
At my last actual job with a paycheck at first all the young guys complained about how noisy my keyboard was. Then I was off one day and one of them worked at my desk. The next day he asked if I could order him a keyboard too. Pretty soon everyone except the boss had one. I was technically only a part time employee, but it was a small company and all the other guys besides the owner were really young, and since I always made decisions without talking to the boss they would end up asking me to order them stuff like that.

·2 weeks agoThat's a legit advantage for sure. And funnily enough, one I'm experiencing real buyer's remorse for right now. -I just got this 2017 Macbook Pro on eBay for what seemed like a great deal, $250, after my 2012 one finally started having enough problems to justify replacing it. But what I didn't know was how Apple had done one of their big stupid ideas in those years, slimming down the profile. WHY?? The old Pro wasn't exactly thick anyway, and if anyone wanted paper-thin they could get the Air!!
Anyway, I immediately noticed how much harder it was to type with so much less key travel (which the old Pro had plenty of -not desktop level, but it suited me well). I guess it's been about a month now, but I have not adapted to this flatness as much as I hoped. I suspect this is as good as I'll get with it.
Oh, and not only am I having to correct typo's left and right; turns out the sliver of space is PERFECT for dust and whatnot to get in and not easily blow out, resulting in stroke failures and double-strokes. Any key that gets like that must be popped off for cleaning, ERRR!!!
This is like deja vu from when I "upgraded" my awesome iPhone 7, made a huge leap in models to the 13 -also what seemed like a great deal, only to find out afterward that it had lousy macro photo capacity compared to older models. -And macro is what I need all the time, for shooting things like jewelry hallmarks. 🤬

·2 weeks agoForgot to say: What I could never go back to is using a mouse, after being used to a trackpad.
onefootflipper
OP2 weeks agoI used the Logitech "Marble Mouse" trackball for so long that I had serious trouble transitioning back to a mouse when applications started expecting a scroll wheel. My wife STILL uses them as they are ambidextrous and she is a lefty. They stopped making them years ago and new ones now run about $200. I still played video games heavily in my early 40s and moving to a normal mouse with those was even harder than it was for windows apps. I hadn't used an actual mouse in any video games in 20 years (they had all started to want the scroll wheel and extra buttons too).

·2 weeks ago · EditedOne remaining mystery for me: you say this was a customer, do you mean a recent one? How did he know you had a Youtube channel?
I could pick your brain for days because I watch a ton of Youtube (haven't had cable in about a decade), and from what I hear content creators say about the platform, it seems to have so much in common with eBay selling. They were both early-internet pioneers of what they did, both still dominant, both ways ordinary people can potentially become very successful, starting with very little capital or know-how, BUT both have also become a lot more complicated over the years, because of growing competition and the companies' strategies for getting as much of the 'pie' as they can.
onefootflipper
OP2 weeks agoAlmost certainly watched the channel before he bought anything from me. I don't inspire a lot of viewer sales because I don't present the sort of fantasy lifestyle that draws in people who don't sell, but I do get a few who go from youtube to ebay. Probably never have anyone make the reverse journey, except Timmy, Timmy has caught me talking about my dealings with him more than once.
A "Timmy" is an excitable but easily distracted and mind changing customer who tends to be a young man with nerdy hobbies. They send a lot of messages, a lot of offers, make a lot of complaints and file a lot of returns. Timmy is the one who buys a Pokemon card and then tears it in half when he gets it and claims shipping damage because the value went down $2 in between when he ordered it and when it arrived.

·2 weeks agoIn your (same title) video you said you're 49 - you're not a Boomer! 🤣 You're GenX. Toward the younger end, at that!
onefootflipper
OP2 weeks agoYes, but "boomer" sells a video title where "late gen-x" does not. And in many of my videos I am specifically talking about the the common practices of the sellers of the generation before mine, which is the generation that really holds the most experienced ebay sellers. My audience also swings a bit older than I am, with my core audience being earlier gen-x and late boomers.
gurlcat
·2 weeks agoWhat's so funny about that is I watched the song video first, and I couldn't understand why you didn't seem p!ssed off in this^ post, because it seemed like the guy was totally making fun of you! It seemed that way before I even hit 'play' because of the title. I thought 'Boomer' was just his assumption and/or chosen for purely smearing effect (like "Okay Boomer"). Even the word 'Reseller' is more loaded than 'Seller' because ... well I get the sense I don't have to explain why to you; you seem to know social media very well, LOL!!
So then I found your video and found that the song was essentially a word-for-word recap. I wonder how much AI he used, like did it write the lyrics, did it create the melody, is that his own voice or a simulator's??
onefootflipper
OP2 weeks agoOh, it was certainly AI, but given the other output of the guy he isn't just letting the system slap out whatever, he has to be the type that gives the AI incredibly complicated instructions and then makes it keep doing parts of it over and changing things.

Wednesday morning, coffee and complaints. 30 days ahead and zero restraint. Listings in the queue, videos on the shelf.
Everybody's doing it wrong but himself. Get a month in the basket.
Listen to his long form with the calendar. Shipping every day. That's the one routine.
Everything else gets batched through the machine.
One day list, next day shoot, next day to keep it moving through.
Every time you jump from a different thing, you're burning up hours, just mode switching. 300 a day was the number before back when covid money came
through the door. Now the sales ain't hitting like they did back then. Don't squeeze every minute for what it's worth again. Mix up the hats, mix up the feed. Don't post 20 clips of the same damn scene.
Time is inventory. Time is everything.
Boomer Reseller is mad at everything. Laptops, labels, photos on the screen.
Oh, Boomer reseller is mad at everything. Why you make it simple?
harder than it needs to be. Oh man. Yelling at the digital clouds. What the hell are you people doing now? If
you waste 10 minutes, hear the war crying. Boomer reseller is mad at everything.
Kristoff finally sold froze and faded away. Take $8, get him out today.
Vintage beer sign sitting for a year. 15 bucks. Fine, make it disappear.
Mr. T sign comic number 1, 10 grand sounds impressive till you understand. 10,000 signatures ain't exactly scarce.
Issue two might actually be the rarer part. Old card games and obsolete tech warhammer motorcycles judge dread wrecks repeat buyer comes back around
to the whales when the categories found inventory moves at its own damn speed profit over sell what you need boomer reseller
is mad at everything laptops labels folders on the screen oh
boomer reseller is mad at everything why you make it simple harder than it needs to be up oh up oh up old man
yelling at the digital clouds. What the hell are you people doing now? Waste 10 minutes. The war cry ring.
Boomer Reseller is mad at everything. And while the hell are laptops still king? Everybody's got a phone for the portable thing. And then you sit down trying to actually work. Desktop's
better. So what's the perk? Then the seller forums open the gate.
Warehouse hero wants to demonstrate. His employees sell more. Well, no sxxx friend. Congratulations. What a shocking end. Then somebody saves every
photograph, every listing image from the distant past. Hierarchical folders name every file. 10 minutes daily just to build that pile. Do the math. 1,200 a year in labor spend.
Keeping pictures you'll never go near. If it doesn't make money, what exactly did you save? Another little ritual keeping you chained. Then
the lights go low and the investors arrive. Before we begin, who do you hate? The poor.
Welcome to the seller. Built like a maze. Zero seller fees. Just shift to pace. Make every sale. Send 12 alerts. Hide what matters underneath the dirt. Everything happens
through messages. Now make new sellers figure out how but never shipped. Keep it on hold. Fun when they notice that's digital gold. Don't let them
choose how the package goes. One wrong button and everybody knows. Wanted a label but you clicked QR. Guess who's getting back inside the
car. $3 item. FedEx run. Nothing can be changed once the choice is done.
Get to the counter. Wait in line. Scan doesn't work cuz you came too soon this time. No printer. Find one. Wrong button. Drive. QR code. Stand in line. Code don't work. Try another time.
Another click, another screen, another pointless middle machine. Boomer reseller is mad at everything. QR codes notification screener is bad at
everything. Every wasted minute it is a personal tag. Old man yelling at the digital cloud. Why the hell would anybody do it that way now?
Boomer Reseller is mad at everything.
Mad at laptop, mad at mad at sellers saving crap at folders. Mad at being mad at pointless
processes. But there's one last thing before we kill the sins. There are still sellers.
Thousands of sellers forcing priority mail on every customer. Years after ground advantage came out. Why?
Why are you doing this? I don't get it.
Boomer Reseller is not at everything.
