my store has been hacked
Summary: r32013 raised concerns about their store possibly being hacked and asked for advice. slippinjimmy and jonathanbrightlight provided guidance on steps to take if the account is indeed compromised, advising to check eBay's resources and to change passwords as a precautionary measure. r32013 explained they were unable to promptly respond due to personal issues. Other participants, such as itsjustasprain and dhbookds, highlighted that sales decline might not necessarily indicate a hack, considering the economic conditions and changes in consumer behavior post-COVID-19. There was some debate among participants about involvement and what constitutes marking a 'best answer.' Overall, the community showed varying levels of support and skepticism about the hacking concern.
I believe that some bad players have hacked into my store. How can I find out and what can I do about it? TIA

·2 months ago@r32013 Just for info: Neither of those indicate a "hack"........... Hack is quite serious: when your account is taken over: expensive stuff listed at cheap prices on your account with payments to go to someone other than you. If it happens, needs to be reported immediately so Ebay can shut down the hackers before they garner alot of sales. Hackers take over your account completely, change the password, so you can't sign in or do anything on the account. They can divert payments due you to their own account.
It's NOT a term to be used lightly.......which is the reason people reacted to no response from you.....
It's not unusual that sales are down from 21-23, that was during, at least part of, the Covid shutdown and sales were abnormally high, just because people shopped on line rather than travel about shopping.

I think you hacked my store, you're selling the same items I have.😀

OP2 months agoI have not marked any as the 'best answer' yet, so someone else is doing that.
I haven't been on this forum before and didn't know I had a short time frame to respond. I am taking care of a dying relative so not focused only on ebay. I'm a part time seller and trying to figure out why my sales have deceased to about 1/3 of what I had 2021-2023. There is a player who has threatened to destroy my store & I don't know how to protect myself. I will contact ebay w/ the contact info I was given on this forum. Thanks all!

And sorry to hear about your relative.

·2 months agoYes, in addition to the Original Poster (you, in this case), responders with a title of Volunteer Community Mentor and a Mentor badge (shown in the footer of their postings) are able to label others' replies as a Solution if they think it's appropriate.
@r32013 : No, you're fine. The only actual deadline here is that you have 24 hours to edit any post of yours before it's locked in. (It used to be just 5 minutes after posting within which you could make alterations, but fortunately that's no longer in effect.) The topic thread itself might not get closed out by moderators for months if not years from now.
It's helpful to respond to any questions you might get from others here so that we have a clear picture of what's happened so far.

I hope you are not thinking that your sales are down because of a hack rather than just the way things go on
eBay and e-commerce in general.
2020 - 2023 was the peak period in eBay's history, free money was widely available, remote working from home was the norm My sales quadrupled during that period and have declined since then, initially back to pre-Covid levels up until the chaos that began 16 months ago and it's been downhill since then.
When money is tight but retail sales are holding it's generally the result of the wealthy getting wealthier and spending lots of money on big ticket items. Your average eBay shoppers of trinkets are just trying to cover their bills, that $50 - $100/month they might spend on eBay just isn't there anymore.

·2 months agoIf your account has genuinely been hacked and someone else has access, eBay has a dedicated number for Hacked Accounts: 1-866-961-9253
You can call directly for those issues (but only those issues, that number cannot be used for any other issues).
r32013
OP2 months agoWhat is BSUM?
I will call the number tomorrow, thanks very much.
There is a nasty player who has threatened to destroy my ability to sell on ebay. Probably both the account and the store. My sales have decreased to 1/3 of what they were 2021-2023. Is that just the economy or a result of being hacked. That's what I'm trying to figure out.

·2 months ago@r32013 what you can do is post on a forum and then never return to get/give any information.
That otta do it.

·2 months agoThe seller posted their original post a whopping four hours ago and y'all are ready to start shrieking about being abandoned? I hope you (not you personally but the collective "you" here) at least noticed that the OP is still logged in... not to mention that they can read replies even without being logged in...

I'm not sure who owes who a nickel?

·2 months agoMe neither, as the OP is not necessarily the one to have marked Best Answer. Community Mentors can do that as well.
soh.maryl
·2 months agoSo others than the original OP can mark a reply as the "best answer"?
So I can go through the forum and mark all my replies as "best answer"?
Excuse me, have some work to do.

Well, I learned something from this thread.
What's your paypal? I owe you a nickel.

·2 months ago@r32013 : When in doubt - change your password. That is Step 0. After that you can look into what might have happened.
You have not told us anything that we can explain or maybe solve. Please click the Reply button and tell us what has happened so far. I see no recent sales or new listings in your account that look out of place.

·2 months agoI wouldn't worry about some nutbag getting mad at you on eBay. They will eventually (probably sooner rather than later) get mad at someone else, especially if their current audience is ignoring them.
I really can't think of any particular hack that could decrease your sales. If you're not seeing any items getting listed that you did not produce, and sales that you do get are proceeding normally, then I doubt that anyone has gotten into your account.
Maybe try listing some different things and see if they get more interest, or trying a discount on your current listing prices, something like that. Yes, the economy is certainly taking a hit these days.
