My Sales have stopped dead! What is going on???
I've been selling clothing on eBay for well over 10 years. This past week I have no sales, no offers not anything! This has never happened for this long before. I'm truly concerned. Is there anything else to try besides the obvious, listing, promoting, etc????

·10 months agoThis not going to help your question because I have the same situation. I sell a random selection of things. I used to get at least 3 or 4 sales a week at least. Now I maybe get 3 or 4 a month and they are very small sales. No offers, lots of watchers. I have lowered pricing, sent sale offers, promoting all of that and yet nothing is looking good. Sooo, if anybody out there can help PLEASE let us know.

·10 months agoYour sold items show that you are getting more sales that 3-4 per month. Granted still one could easily expect more sales than you are currently getting.
One suggestion I would make is to revise many of your titles. They are not very informative and many are extremely short. Your titles are so important for buyers searching for items like you are selling. But if you don't give the title enough information that buyers often search by, the buyers will never see your listings as they won't come up in their search returns.
For example. One of your listings has this title: Zirconia Earrings.
I would suggest something like this. 1/2 kt Zirconia Stud Pierced Earrings, Goldtone
Merely a suggestion to look at your titles as I think many buyers may not be even seeing your listings to even consider purchasing them due to a lack of information in your titles.

·11 months agoMy sales were very slow in August, which is typical, but they were slower than normal. I attributed it to market slowdowns and lots of economic uncertainty, plus the cost of shipping going up. I think we're all waiting for the other shoe to drop with the economy... On a positive note, my sales have started to pick up a little this week, which is also typical for the end of summer. Sales are still not great, but starting to move, which is positive. I did run sales during the summer, and that helped move some inventory, so you could try that. I have to admit there have been days I've looked at job listings...

·11 months agoHang in there Girl. It’s no secret, whispered in the shadows of the marketplace. If your sales have flatlined, it’s‘ cause you’re not paying eBay’s toll. Want your listings to shine? Fork over the gold. Partner up—50/50, or better yet, 49 you, 51 them. Don’t play ball? Your shop’s a ghost town. Period.
We ran a test, me and a buddy,. I covered his losses; he cranked eBay’s “Promoted Listings†dial. Boom—His sales exploded, up 40%, just as eBay swore. But the catch? Every sale bled him dry. losing on every sale. He dialed back, saved his wallet, and poof—sales vanished. Like a switch flipped off. Cold. Done.
eBay’s got a vision: your merch is free, right? No overhead, no storage, no phone bills, no hustle. No employees, no packing, no midnight messages. Just you, magically churning profit from thin air. Fair, right? Wrong. Truth is, you’ll make more greeting folks at Walmart Than slaving over listings, storing stock, shipping packages. We’ve got proof—numbers don’t lie. But when I shouted this truth, eBay yanked my post. Called it spam. This one’s next, I bet! and then the algorithm turns us off every time.
Still, I’m not quitting. eBay’s a beast, but it’s our beast. If I ran the show, I’d probably play the same game. Pay to win, or watch your dreams collect dust This is geared for he who has the most money to lose wins. Me this is My Family been with them since 1997 watched the good and bad of the Marketplace. Good luck, sellers—keep fighting, keep listing. The game’s rigged, but the bold still play.

Are you aware that MOST sellers do NOT use Promoted Listings?
Your friend was lucky. That isn't the average thing to happen. But it is wonderful for your friend. Promoted listings can work very well for some sellers and not so much for others. Which is why we don't all use them. If he lost money on those sales because of how much he was paying in fees, that is on him. Sellers control the additional percentage of fees they pay for promoting their items.
I wish you the very best of luck and a strong holiday season.

·11 months agoYes I am .It all comes down if your doing this as a Hobby or just trying to rid yourselves of accumulated Stuff. Or your doing this as a Business. I see most of the sellers replies on this site and if you look at their Dailey sales, if their items were Free they could not support a Shop with overhead and expenses.
I can testify to that myself when we started on here and going into the 2000-3006 we had 6 full time employees and a large warehouse. Unfortunately we slowly had to let most everyone go. Given todays PAY TO SELL, unless you give up a large percentage of your Revenue to eBay. YOU CANNOT SUPORT a Business its impossible!!!. yet everyone on here is so scared to say the TRUTH, And Until that starts happening NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE. But like I said this is my family and if you cannot say what your going through to the other family members than something is truly wrong.

·11 months agoI run a business on eBay (I don’t own it, I’m just a manager, so I do realize my situation is different from many). We do approximately $400,000 in revenue on eBay in a year, and we do zero advertising on eBay currently. No Promoted Listings, no Promoted Store, nothing. We list, people find what we list and want to buy it, and we sell it. This idea the you have to pay to play is not grounded in reality most of the time.
The key is having items that aren’t dealing with high competition and no way to get an advantage over other sellers. If you’re dropshipping the same junk that 100 other people are dropshipping (not saying this is what you’re doing, I didn’t even look at your listings, just giving a common example), then you can’t really compete without using promotions to maybe be seen by more people. But if you list uncommon and sought after items, and you can distinguish yourself by your photos, descriptions, return policy, reputation, etc, then you can definitely support a business on eBay without paying a dime in advertising.

Yet he does not show a single listing in fact he shows "0 feedbacks-Zero Sales!!!.and not one sale if your so proud, why are you not sharing this secret? seems all the successful people on here that claim to be experts have ZERO LISTINGS with the exception maybe of "mam 98031" She is not afraid to let people know she is a true seller on here. PROVE WHAT YOUR CLAIMING!! as a Member on here since 1997, I honestly don't believe this. I know too many other sellers. I have over 25k listings in almost every category you can imagine if I knew I could sell $1100.00 a day selling books I'd list the 30,000 books I have in inventory. only problem is they are really slow sell for everyone but JonathanBrightlight . And I'm not upset at you challenging my facts. I did post them on here for everyone to see last month and eBay immediately took down my post and called it SPAM! AND MY SALES HAVE YET TO RECOVER FROM THE POST, my sale immediately shut off after the post. I would guess in my humble opinion that the algorithm shuts down the TRUTH. But I cannot prove this so its just a theory right now but we are testing that currently .so since we all live together on this community why don't you Share???

There are many posters that use posting IDs instead of their main selling IDs. It really isn't unusual.
When I started posting in the Community, I used one of my Selling IDs. It has presented a problem a few times over the years, but now it has been so long it would be hard to change. But if I could not it effectively I would absolutely use a posting ID.

·11 months agoHow were sales in August? How about September? My sales have been anemic this month so far, I have done everything possible and its been DEAD. Any thoughts?
mam98031
·11 months agoFor me August was a little better than expected since August is typically the worst month of the year for me.
As for August, we are only 4 days in, so I reserve my opinion. Typically I don't see an increase in sales until about mid month and then things start coming to life.
jonathanbrightlight
·11 months agoAugust was a 0.5% increase in sales over July for us, but a 3.9% over August 2024. And that’s about the lowest increase in sales I’ve seen in a while. So far this year we’re up 16% over the same period of 2024. And 2024 was a 74.6% increase over 2023!

·11 months agoI thought the topic was why a specific ebay reseller is seeing extremely low activity. There are other forums to rant about politics or the economy including consumer sentiment but she, like me, is probably looking for tips on what to adjust to her store.
I have $23,000 sales over 3 months which runs quite consistently. My sales have recently slowed almost nothing so I changed my store to free returns hoping that would create more activity - nope. Then I upped my promoted listings percentage - nope. Then I increased the percentage off for ALL of my sales - nope it continued to slow.
Finally, it stopped! Where I normally expect about $400+in sales on the weekend I sold $37 yesterday and $10 on Saturday.
I came to this forum with the idea of putting my store on vacation mode for a day or two or getting new ideas. But instead I generally find amateur blow-hards who think this is the place to opine on their hated of Trump, etc. Grow up people.

·1 year agoHave you ever tried selling anything other than clothing and shoes? Between thrift shops and church sales, where you can fill a 50 gallon bag for $5, it must be getting more difficult to exclusively re-sell used clothing.
powell-collectibles
·1 year agoFrom what I have seen and heard, there are much better venues for selling clothing, depending on what you have. One of my sons has made a killing off of things that he buys at thrift stores and eBay and sells on Poshmark and some other sites. Thing is that he understands what his demographic wants and what they’re willing to pay.

·1 year agoClothes on ebay is a young person's game now. If you don't have access to a goodwill outlet and are not in good enough shape to sift through 1000+ items per day there in order to purchase 20 then you are going to have trouble succeeding as a clothing specialist.
There are always exceptions, but daily refinement and technsports spent years teaching their assembly line model of clothing sales and it has really flooded the market.
chapeau-noir
·11 months agoLate to this, but as a clothing seller I disagree. And I don't shop at the bins (they're too far away to effectively shop there). Plus these days I'm a lazy clothing seller - the stuff still sells. It's all in the selection.
birchy-36
·1 year agoSelling clothing is a dead end on eBay. Too many sellers, too few buyers. My advice, which I am following myself, is to stop buying ANY inventory and liquidate what you have by lowering prices and allowing offers. Forget auctions. There are no other viable outlets to sell clothing as all the others have too little traffic. Be happy that it was good until it wasn’t and move on. eBay is not going to have a comeback.

·1 year agoThe Consumer Sentiment Index registered at 52.2 in April, down from 57.0 in March. The Index of Current Economic Conditions also decreased, while the Index of Consumer Expectations fell as well. I on average ship about 8-10 packages on a Monday, this Monday 0. People will buy my stuff in a good economy, people do not buy my stuff in a bad economy. Been like that since 1998, I personally have cut back on my spending to essentials only and it looks like a lot of people are doing the same.

·1 year agoSome sellers confuse a drop in the value of sales with a drop in the number of sales.
IE -they sold 100 items last month for $1000, but this month they sold 100 items for only $500.
My sales have a very regular pattern of stalling in April, but last year my January to March busy period extended all the way to July.
Not this year.
I'm back to normal, except that I am selling more overseas and less to the USA. Domestic (Canada) is normal.
My guess is that US residents have finally realized they are going to be paying federal sales taxes on imported goods.

·1 year ago@scorwin814 As a long time clothing seller, I will just say that sadly, a lot of your brands are not in demand & also your prices are quite high for some of them (and I say this as a high pricer). Jacyln Smith was a Kmart brand, several of your brands are Target brands, Lands End tanked when Sears started selling them (even though they're good quality), Worthington is Penneys, Old Navy is a discount retailer. $18 for that Jacyln Smith top is close to what it sold for new.
I'm in the same boat as you, so I def feel your pain, but if I were you, I would drop those cheapo brand or drop your prices on them. Even your better brands are so saturated in the market unfortunately 😞

·1 year agoWouldn't consider 16 items sold in April, one sold on April 16 as being dropped dead activity. There are only 3,900,000 listings in the clothing category just for eBay - lots of other venues too. Maybe Easter has something to do with a slow down especially - winter type clothing. When it is June in January your probably in Rio de Janeiro. The last 90 day you sold 105 items -that's just a tad over 1 item sold ever calendar day. In April your sales rate is just a tad under 1 a day and the month ain't over yet. Our less than friendly Walmart and every other clothing store have lots of clothing at clearance prices.
In a nutshell it looks like it ain't a bad as you think - from my viewpoint.
Sold stuff for 41.5 years in the same industry - sales activity goes up and down like a yo yo. The only things that stays constant is beer and good whiskey.
Oh as for me that social security 2.9% increase and increase in medicare that I paid into since I was 16 netted me about a half at tank of gas each month but was offset by a 50% increase in my co-pays for my in network doctors ($30 bucks to $45) - 30 million over the age of 65 in the US not counting those that swam the Rio Grand - thats ~ 10% of the US population. Insurance for home, auto, and property taxes . jumped up too plus food and other every day expenses Yep had to tighten the belt. Glad we saved for rainy daysj

·1 year agoalso may I add that eBay does no advertising
I've seen eBay advertising on YouTube and FaceBook - in spite of AdBlockPlus- and eBay is occasionally crosslisting to FBMarketplace.
They don't advertise on TV . If you only watch broadcast TV, you will never see an eBay ad.
They shop on TikTok, Temu, Poshmark, even on Walmart and Target! (of course I don't want to mention the big A!) Oh, and FB Marketplace as well.
I've seen ads for WalMart on TV, but the last ads I saw for AZ were searching for workers when they were building a new warehouse on our Island more than two years ago. PoshMark stopped advertising on cable TV about four years ago.
I've never seen an ad for any of the other companies.

·1 year agoSame here. April 15 was last good sales day. Since then its 80% drop off out of no where. Has not recovered. Wondering if the Facebook integration is affecting functionality of the site (check out, cart, payment, etc....) Have heard from many others with multiple thousands of item stores same thing. Economy and tax time could cause a drop off some, but having so many people go to 70 - 80% drop off in sales & offers overnight in many cases looks like an eBay technical issue that they are NOT disclosing or more worrisome don't even know about.
mam98031
·1 year agoJust looking at your sold items show in the past 90 days you get a bit over 200 transactions a month. Your April sales seems to be in line with that number as well. Maybe a little behind. Unfortunately, many of your brands are so supersaturated - I'm talking about here and local thrifts - that they sell for pennies on the dollar. They DID sell to a certain extent up until a few years ago, but the pandemic brought a huge number of sellers online who clear out thrifts and dump everything here. This swamps our nice selection and presentation. I'm giving mine a last few months then they get packed up for donation or returned to the original owner (unless they want me to donate). I'm looking for more gig work beyond my research job - this train is running out of track.

·1 year agoOk, a quick glance at your store told me some really important information.
Your sell through rate is 64 months, that is over 5 years. It is nowhere near the worst I have ever seen, however it is indicative of some sort of major overall problem.
Your titles are good, your photos are good, which means only one thing, that you are consistently listing things that people don't want or at prices they are not willing to pay.
A browse through you store tells me that you price guess. That is you seem to price items without doing any research as to what those items actually sell for. This is easy to spot due to the very repetitive price points you use and the prices you put on your plush items. Those items are extremely easy to price research. There is just no way someone checing their prices would put $15 on an item that tends to sell for about $3 plus shipping.
Now every once in a while the stars align, you guess right on the price, the price changes to what you had guess in the first place or someone happens into the overpriced listing and buys it anyway. My entire card store is based exactly on that, putting 2.99 on every single trading card and having 11,000 of them so they clear me $500 a month after expenses. However 11,000 trading cards only takes up a tiny fraction of the space of 2000 clothing items.
My suggestion?
Use the bulk editor to lower all your prices on your old items 10 percent across the board (minimum price 2.99) and keep doing that until all the old ones are gone or they are all sitting around at $2.99. Meanwhile, actually price research every new item you list looking at both "price lowest first" and at "sold items".
After all your old listings have been 2.99 for 3 months then end them all and bring them to goodwill, if they didn't sell through a series of markdowns and then still didn't sell being at 2.99 for 3 months then they never will sell.
I specifically say $2.99 because $2.99 plus shipping is the price point I figured via timing my processes as the lowest one that is even worth shipping out.

That's the market that small, pre-owned clothing sellers like myself try to serve - that style, that brand, that size, that colour or whatever, that our buyer cannot find locally, or simply does not have time to go from store to store looking for, from a hand selected range. We fill in the gaps.

·1 year agoThere are always lists of "reasons", and they're always the same no matter what the economy is doing or if the Superbowl is on or not - they are often subjective to each individual - but March/April is transitional and often a dead period for clothing sales.
Also, for those who have a lot of mart/mall level brands - they're increasingly over-represented and these days can be had for a dime on the dollar at any catalog or store clear-out. I try not to carry them anymore and am trying to get rid of the ones I still have. The glut after the supply chain problems from Covid guaranteed that.

Is that in fact the bottom line? I am not experiencing it -- either as an eBay seller, or as a regular old consumer. (I should hasten to add that I have never bought things that I do not need... and as a general rule I am not into "things" anyway. ðŸ˜)
From what I've observed, perceptions of the economic environment -- let's say, whether it's "safe" or a "good idea" to spend money -- is a highly subjective.
If a person lives within their means and manages their finances responsibly, then the economy is always in good shape.
Conversely, the economy is usually lousy if one is broke, living paycheck to paycheck, or deeply in debt.
There are also vast regional differences to take into account. The area where I live (DC metro area) traditionally is pretty immune to economic vicissitudes. Same applies to other locales I'd imagine.
And of course there are areas where the opposite is true, for example, these days, the US-Canadian border.
I'd enjoy hearing other perspectives.

To delete emojis you need to use the backspace key, not delete. Delete is grayed out for emojis..

·1 year agoI think dirk12955 basically sums it up; also may I add that eBay does no advertising and 90% of the people I work with and know ( I know A LOT of people!) either do not shop/buy on eBay at all and many young people ask bewildered-like: "Ebay is still around?" They shop on TikTok, Temu, Poshmark, even on Walmart and Target! (of course I don't want to mention the big A!) Oh, and FB Marketplace as well. Times change, people change, what was hot is not, etc. Best advice I can give: diversify, experiment, sell on other platforms, don't keep all your eggs in one basket. De-list your oldest listings and tweak them somehow and sell them similar so that they look fresh. Promote if you want to, and don't expect much of a profit. Ebay is more like a chick farm than ever before- cheep, CHEAP, CHEAP! This ain't 1998, or 2008, nor even 2018- every year gets harder, its more of a grind, has more adversity, and remember the song line- "money's tight, nothing free, won't somebody come and rescue me?" Maybe that should be eBay's theme song CROSSFIRE by Stevie Ray Vaughan (or 16 TONS by Tennessee Ernie Ford ha ha!)

·11 months ago100% true, they havnt evaluted and there are many newcomers, they have (so they say) 134 million members but that could be per household, one is logged in and say "Hey look what I have found" the reply is great, buy it and charge it to my card, so now that 134 million is 67 million, then take off those who only sell and thats 51 million, then take off people who also have a business account for buying, say 10 million so looks like the total amount using ebay is not much above 56 million WORLDWIDE out of 7 BILLION people, a mere % point of possible buyers.

·1 year agoI would think with money being tight people would look for used items on eBay and deals. The opposite effect.

·1 year agoYep , that's exactly what the experts are predicting
I read this article last night saying used clothing and accessories sales should increase due to tariffs and there has been an increase in downloads of ebay"s app.
"Stores selling secondhand clothes, shoes and accessories are poised to benefit from President Donald Trump'strade war even as businesses the world over race to avert potential damage, according to industry experts.
The number of mobile app downloads for nine resale marketplaces the firm tracks — eBay, OfferUp, Poshmark, Mercari, Craigslist, Depop, ThredUp, TheRealReal and Vinted — increased by 3% between January and the end of March, the first quarterly gain in three years, Sensor Tower said.
The firm estimates downloads of the apps for eBay, Depop, ThredUp and The RealReal also surged compared to a year earlier for the week of March 31, which was when Trump unveiled since-paused punitive tariffs on dozens of countries."
Secondhand stores are poised to benefit if US tariffs drive up new clothing costs

·1 year agoThose 10 points are the best explanation in all the threads - we too have seen the same thing and had an Ebay store since 2004... ever since the pandemic - nothing has ever been the same.
Ebay too doesn't do anything to help... they can't figure out if they want to be a place for "new" items or "garage sale type items" so they're all over the map which doesn't help anybody.
They could have had it all... we thrived in the beginning... but evidently their Management didn't know how to grow.... IMHO
