Monday, October 13th Post Offices are closed | Selling

Despite me knowing this already, I didn't realize the impact it has on my stupid buyers. By that I don't mean my buyers are stupid in general, but I'm calling out the portion of buyers of mine who are just plain stupid.

Because of this holiday, I will end up losing a lot more money on returns. I recently have had a ton of buyers getting items from me that they need by Oct 14. Many of them are last minute buyers, and many of them not realizing that Oct 13 is a holiday. And of those last minute oblivious buyers, many of them are plain stupid because they flood my message inbox with threats and entitled demands just because they were the ones who didn't calculate their timing correctly. So yea, according to them I'll have a ton of returns coming back because of their stupidity.

Surprisingly it feels to me this wave of irrational buyers seems more troublesome than my Christmas season last year. If this is an indication of how things are this year, I'm totally not looking forward to the late frantic oblivious Christmas shoppers this year. Heaven help us all.

It's not so much the product as it is the lack of planning.

I got an order this past Tuesday along with a note asking me to rush it out the door. It was a birthday gift for a party on Sunday the 13th. And I did.

According to racking it got delivered Friday the 12th.

In the meantime, the labels I printed Saturday evening were all dated Monday the 13th.

If this is how you feel about buyers, especially at this time of year, why not just put your store on Vaca during the holiday season?

But yea, closing shop earlier before the USPS cutoff would be a good idea on the ol' stress level. Gotta find that sweet spot timing tho. DEFCON 5 level buyers I can handle but I definitely would close up before the DEFCON 1 buyers start looking at my store.

This Oct 14 thing crept up on me and was unexpected.

I just think it is sad how you talk about buyers and the names you call them. The vast majority of my buyers are terrific people and I have many repeat buyers. I would never think to talk about them the way you do.

What USPS "cutoff"? Do you mean for packages to arrive to the buyers before Christmas?

I stay open the entire season. For me my busiest times of the year are the couple weeks after Christmas and throughout January. If I get lucky, February is pretty good too.

Oh there are likely lots of reasons to question this holiday in the current climate in our country. I come from American Indian heritage. We are often forgotten in conversations about the beginnings of our country as well as many other conversations.

It was mostly a political move. It's a ridiculous 'holiday' and a great example of revisionist history. It's fine to celebrate Italian achievements but let's be real - Columbus just sailed to an already settled landmass which had already been visited (as above), he didn't 'discover' anything (save that you can fool a lot of men into sailing beyond their comfort zone by jiggering the log books and telling them they didn't come all that far that day).

They'd run it right into the ground.

I recall when Washington State voted on getting rid of the state stores and having regular stores carry liquor. I voted "yes" to get rid of the state stores because I don't see the state having any business peddling liquor, but a lot of people who voted the same were SURE that private enterprise would mean cheaper prices on booze.

As far as the price increases in Washington on liquor--> 20.5% state spirit sales tax, $3.77 per liter tax plus 6.5% state sales tax and whatever local tax is. The highest in the nation.

Seems as if they didn't like losing their piece of the pie and decided to get it anyway.

I went to Nevada with low taxes on spirits and the prices in the hotel gift shop were a little over half of what they are here. That was in the most expensive place in LV to buy spirits.

The high prices are just state imposed is all.......................

P.S. I just checked in another window and the scotch I drink is less than half of what I pay here in Washington if I bought it in Nevada. It would drop even more with a case discount that I can't get here. (That case discount might be a retailer thing though).

Because a corporation's only interest is profit. Do you really think Amazon would pay for gas and a driver to deliver a birthday card, utility bill, or license plate renewal sticker to a house out in the boonies for 73 cents? At best they would jack up postal rates to rural locations; at worst they would just eliminate them from mailbox delivery. Imagine having to drive several miles to the nearest gas station or whatever, to get your mail from one of those big plastic kiosk things, and then some days the touch screen isn't working. Oh but there's a 1-800 number to call. ðŸ¤£

There is nothing quite like the United States Postal Service anywhere in the world. A lot of people won't know how special it is until it's gone.

I have a shipment I could send to Czech Republic for $3.61 untracked letter. (Not legal but it would arrive.)

If I use Canada Post Air Mail Tracked International it would be $68.

By UPS it would be $212.

I'm waiting for the Canada Post strike to settle.

Well yes and no. To be a member of Amazon Prime, you have a fee you have to pay. Prime shipping only costs 14.99 per month. The program has add ons for a few other benefits available, but of course that drives up pricing of the program too.

It's Thanksgiving Monday in Canada, so it would not be open in any case.

Even if Canada Post was not on strike.

At least they are moving to rotating strikes so the mail may start moving.

I've been holding an item destined for Czech Republic which will ship air mail tracked for $68 with Canada Post or $212 with UPS.

But everyone knows that privatizing the post office would be cheaper and more efficient, of course. /s

A little off the subject...but I thought I give a shot-out to Canada..with the strike and such.

With my government shutdown...no Blue Angels show.

However, The Canadian Snowbirds will be doing the air show in San Francisco October 10-12 instead.

And I heard them today flying overhead...than you Canada!

It was great for a nation to step in...
