Measuring Unmarked Cowboy Boots
Hello!
I've got a handful of custom made unmarked cowboy boots. (I rarely sell boots/shoes)
I'm having difficulty sizing them based on the pointed tips.
They measure 12" long x 4.5" wide. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time.

·2 years agoI have been wearing 12 D shoes for more than 50 years without issues.
I can never predict what size cowboy boot will provide a comfortable fit, nor can the any shoe store I have bought at.
The problem is usually the arch. Sometimes changing sizes can solve the problem, sometimes modification with a baseball bat is required. I would not trust an Ebay buyer to properly modify anything without doing damage.

And thinking about your issue, I'd like to add another thought. Since I'm so afraid for you to list them here, I'm with the 'Sell local' crowd. To expand on that thought... I worked for an upper-end consignment shop for a few years, and we'd have LOVED to have those boots for our 'local' clients.
Check for such in your area. If they know their customers (tastes, sizes, wants), they might be able to get buyers to come in immediately with only a phone call. (We sure did, anyway!) Your boots would be on display (with no out-of-pocket costs/headaches) and you might be able to bag half of what they sell for. Sleep on that...

·2 years agoMy rather large, extended family knows that on a family occasion I may show up with several pair of oddly sized or unknown sized boots and shoes for them to try on for me.

·2 years agoAre you measuring the sole... from the front tip to the back of the heel? Or the footbed... from the front tip to the back of the boot? I only ask because I'm a big ol' tomboy from Nashville and have several pairs... all fit; all Women's Size 9.
Here's (some of) what's in my closet:
- Reba (pointed toe) @ 10 1/2" x 3 3/4" (tip to heel back), but 12 1/4" x 3 3/4" (footbed)
- Custom (pointed toe) @ 10 5/8" x 3 5/8" (tip to heel back), but 11 1/2" x 3 3/8" (footbed)
- Ariat (snip toe) @ 10 7/8" x 4" (tip to heel back), but 12 1/2" x 4" (footbed)
- Old Gringo (snip toe) @ 11" x 4" (tip to heel back), but 12" x 4" (footbed)
- Old Gringo (snip toe) @ 11 1/8" x 3 3/4" (tip to heel back), but 11 3/4" x 3 3/4" (footbed)
^^^ That's a whole bunch of numbers... so I guess what I'm saying is that great-fitting cowboy boots are as personal as great-fitting jeans. I tend to lean toward the suggestion to see if you have friends or family to use like rhesus monkeys for you. (Oh... and your photo is of snip toe boots, not pointed.)
I also think they'd be a risky item to sell here... maybe a Return or two (or three or five) before selling to the right buyer. Good luck and good golly...

·2 years agoPart of the reason for all the inconsistencies is that the true size measure of shoes is from the heel to the ball of ones foot.

·2 years agoI thought that was just the arch length - wouldn't it have to be compared to the heel-to-toe length to make sure the length is proper? If the heel-to-toe length is longer, I thought that then would be the measurement one took. At least, that's what I offer when I sell shoes (though TBH, I haven't sold anything other than sports shoes on eBay for quite a while). The snipped or winklepicker toe does cause problems.

·2 years agoSelling on line is a different story and even harder when the size is missing. Probably defaulting to total length is the best solution. Heel to ball of foot is probably the same as measuring the arch as ball of foot is really the end of the arch

·2 years agoRight - heel to toe is about all one can do. I had a customer who insisted on measuring shoes by backing the heel against a wall and taking the inches measurement on the horizontal from the wall to the toe as equivalent to the size measurement, i.e., inches number equal size number. I went down a rabbit hole trying to verify if that was true but it just made everything more complicated.

·2 years agoA soft measuring tape helps - measure the length of the insole rather than the outside. A pointy toe would throw that off too. I don't have flat arches, I have pancake flat arches and other problems with sizing, and can't buy boots for love or money. Boots sales are just begging to be boot returns. Another vote for sell local.

Interesting... the last time I was measured for shoes was at the Red Goose store as a child. I remember putting my foot on a device that measured it from the back of the heel to the end of the toe and another piece that snugged up to the side of the ball of my foot.
Oh... and if "Half the fun of having feet is Red Goose Shoes!", then the other half is growing up and buying boots. 😀
I always thought it was as @chapeau-noir does. I have a killer high arch... it's difficult for me to get boots, anyway. 😟

·2 years agoYes that device measures your foot two ways. Total length and length from heel to ball of the foot. Ideally the widest part of your foot(the ball of your foot) should be aligned with the widest part of the shoe

·2 years agoYou might want to sell them local. Mail order is asking for sizing issues and returns. You will be wagering the profit of the sale vs shipping both ways. Shoes are tough enough to fit when you know their size.

·2 years agoyou can measure the length and there are charts on google that tells what size equates to the inches. Just make sure NOT to include the unusable part of the boots bottom like the toe if it is too narrow for the foot to fit into or a very thick sole that. protrudes outside the leather

·2 years agoIf it was me, I would ask family or friends with different shoe sizes to try them on. That's what I did when I had an unsized coat to sell. People might not like trying on all shoes though.
