Managed shipping
Summary: The discussion centers around eBay's new "Ship With eBay" program, focusing on concerns about shipping carriers and fees. bashort expresses frustration with the potential requirement to use FedEx instead of UPS and criticism of eBay's fees on shipping. inhawaii and monroe67 clarify that sellers choose the carrier and that eBay still charges fees on total sales, including shipping. dhbookds voices concerns about eBay possibly retaining rate differences, while monroe67 counters that there’s no evidence for this. roccotacodad54 and sfau indicate a preference for USPS due to local FedEx limitations.
So far not liking what I see.
A big deal for me is that this uses USPS or Fedex.
Currently we ship USPS and UPS.
My nearest Fedex drop off is 20 miles away but we have 2 UPS drop off locations.
Also the myth about ebay being forced to charge final value fees on shipping because sellers were selling $5 items with $100 shipping to avoid fees is exposed, they are still going to charge fees on shipping.

·1 week agoI don't like the part where eBay picks which shipper.
I only buy and try to avoid FedEx as much as possible due to the service in my region.
I'd gladly pay more to have an item sent USPS.
If I'm not offered a choice at least it looks as though I may be buying less on eBay.......................

·1 week agoIt would be nice if the seller didn't have to pay a fee on shipping for the managed shipping. Dollar General is the nearest Fed Ex drop off and I don't think they can handle the increase in drop-offs.

·1 week agoFrom what I've seen in and of your listings, you, bashort, will probably not be added into this new Ship With eBay program.
As a very experienced eBay seller, you may already be using Business Policies, or Seller Hub, or eBay International Shipping, all of which currently disqualify any seller from this new Ship With eBay program. Also, the fact that you use UPS for shipping may also disqualify you.
It seems to me that only newer sellers and returning or infrequent sellers are being -- how to say it -- "enrolled" into the Ship With eBay program. I don't know if they get an choice to opt out.
And about this:
"Also the myth about ebay being forced to charge final value fees on shipping because sellers were selling $5 items with $100 shipping to avoid fees is exposed, they are still going to charge fees on shipping." - - - - -
It's not a myth. There's nothing to expose.
The percentage portion of eBay's Final Value Fees (FVFs) will still be a percentage of the Total Amount Paid By The Buyer. As they have been since, I believe, the second quarter of 2011. The Total Amount Paid By The Buyer usually does include some money paid by the buyer.
A gripe we sometimes see in these forums is about eBay's FVF on shipping prices being "unfair". The "reasoning" is that since the buyer pays for shipping, for the label, and the seller uses the buyer's money to actually buy that shipping label, that eBay has very little to do with shipping or the label.
in this Ship With eBay program, eBay does in fact buy the shipping label. That's why it is "prepaid": eBay pre-pays for the label. eBay then gives the seller the choice of printing the label or taking the related QR code to the post office for printing the label there.
Therefore, it seems to me -- there could be an argument that --
eBay actually deserves the FVF on shipping in these transactions that use the Ship With eBay program.

·1 week agoAlways been more than one argument for the fvf on shipping. Those who offer free shipping pay it......so it was a disincentive to offer free shipping.......there's also the argument that ebay provides the info/forms etc........plus handles the payments involved......

OP1 week agoI just read it again and found that business accounts are not eligible, that's good news, hope it stays that way

·1 week agoWould you please give us a couple examples of your listings that are in Managed Shipping?
bashort
OP1 week agoI am not in managed shipping ,yet anyway, just concerned about the possibility
mam98031
·1 week agoOh. I wouldn't spend a bunch of time worrying about this when there are so many things that are currently happening to keep us all engaged. Managed shipping is just getting introduced to New Sellers and will likely change a great deal in the coming months. So what concerns you today may not be a problem tomorrow.
bashort
OP1 week agoI wrongly assumed everyone would end up with managed shipping.

·1 week agoAs I get it.....ebay will decide what to charge the buyer for shipping........if they go with retail rates for the buyer.......they will retain the difference between retail and commercial rate of USPS. (don't know how Fedex works)......so the benefit to their bottom line could be huge. Meanwhile, sellers will lose that discount $$..........

Sounds like a lot of scare tactics ......... without facts to back them up.
Yes, in the Ship With eBay program, eBay will "decide what to charge the buyer for shipping." A recent eBay notice from about this new program stated as the first benefit of using Ship With eBay is "Competitive Bay shipping rates."
I read that as -- ok, people using Ship With eBay will get the same eBay discounted USPS prices that my selling ID does (and I am not eligible to be added into Ship With eBay).
Which seems only fair, especially to the buyers, who will have no way of knowing whether the sellers are in Ship With eBay or not.
I don't believe there is any evidence that eBay "will retain the difference between retail and commercial rate[s] of USPS" or that "sellers will lose that discount $$.........."
dhbookds
·1 week agoIt's not spelled out, so no evidence either way (as I read it)......so there are still questions to be answered. Was not try "scare" people, just stated IF they went with retail rates, etc would happen. Competitive rates could mean they won't charge higher than retail.......

There's no myth about that.
They are doing it and will continue to do so.
bashort
OP1 week agoNot possible with ebay managed shipping, the buyer pays ebay for the shipping, ebay provides the seller with the label.
Also ebay picks if it will be USPS or Fedex
inhawaii
·1 week agoI'm confused.
What's not possible?
Under the old system: eBay takes fees from the total sale including shipping
Under the new system: eBay still takes fees from the total sale including shipping.
monroe67
·6 days ago"Also ebay picks if it will be USPS or Fedex"
That is false.
The seller chooses whether to ship by USPS or by FedEx -- as always.
The buyer chooses to pay the shipping price shown in the listing -- as always.
Currently, eBay is using only USPS and FedEx as the shipping carriers participating in this new Ship With eBay program.

OP6 days agoBack when ebay started charging final value fees on shipping the story was that they were forced to because sellers would sell a $100 item for $5 with $95 shipping to avoid fees, my point was if that was the reason then if they manage shipping that form of fee avoidance would no longer be possible so charging final value fees on shipping would no longer be necessary
