Make Offer or Auction Auto-Payments
I did a best offer on an item and it got decline...today...but
But I did get an eBay email immediately "we've saved your selected payment method" for Best Offer & Auctions!"
Last week I won auctions and got to pay them in 2 days for 2 different auctions.
I guess now I am also one of those who win an auction or do a best offer that is accepted it will be immediately paid using my one credit card(I have 5 credit cards on file I use.)
I use different credit cards for payments...guess that's over. I thought I was one of the lucky ones.
Now I'm in this...guess I will be careful with auctions from now on. The retractions of other bidders is what can be scary. Not thinking I win but I might win with retractions from bidders. Combined shipping looks like a problem with I win more than 1 auction in a day.
I know, a lot of people are complaining...I thought I would put my 2 cents in also.
I sure do wish they wouldn't have done this.
It seems its only domestic for now:
I had someone ask for a combined international shipping total...it sat and they never paid...my items sat unlisted for 4 days until I cancelled the transaction.
As a buyer and a seller I see a lot less buyers buying and bidding on auctions.

OP2 years agoIt is becoming more complicated to buy and sell on eBay.
I understand everyone trying to be helpful but....well, the response is if you do this and this and this and this then that and that will correct this and this. I have to opt-in or opt-out or do this or do that. Like with EIS and this auto-pay or change default this. Really? I spend more time changing stuff for listings and buying then actually trying to list items. Can't someone on eBay just send an email to a buyer or seller to opt-in or opt-out or do you this or that?
I have to search myself for this and that to change this and that because eBay made changes that will create changes that I want or do not want.
I feel I am becoming a computer programer rather than selling or buying on eBay.

·2 years agoI just deleted my preferred method for payment (auto pay) on auctions/offers. so now I will see what happens on my next auction bid or best offer if the seller has the auto pay options enabled.
Not sure how it will affect my payment for shipping labels as a seller, but should find out shortly. On the label generation I think I can just tick off the method of payment at the bottom.
I also messaged the seller who accepted my offer 2 days ago ( which is how I found out I have auto pay as a Buyer also). The seller was unaware of this and was not happy. He unchecked both.

·2 years agoMost changes you speak of can be made using the Bulk Editor which saves a lot of time. Well as long as you don't have these shipping terms and other things stated in your description rather than or in concert with the specific fields that Ebay has given us for certain information.
Changes are not a new thing to this site. And yes at times it is simply overwhelming to be sure. But this is nothing new ESPECIALLY leading into the Holiday season. I am just grateful that Ebay has apparently heard us and is easing us into these changes well ahead of the holiday season instead of dumping a bunch of things on us that we need to fix our listings for while we are creating listings, bringing in inventory and simply gearing up for the Holiday season.
No one will every like every change Ebay makes. There is absolutely no way that ANY company can implement a change that everyone will like, want or need. It just won't happen, there are just too many of us. And then there is the human character. Most typically don't like change. Good or otherwise. Change can be very hard on people. Especially with sellers like me that have been here for so many years. As we age, change gets harder and harder. And Ebay is full of sellers that have been here 20+ years.

·2 years agoGotta love all the gnashing of teeth over this. For years (decades) sellers have complained about non-paying bidders and best offers. Now eBay decides to do something about it and make buyers put up or shut up and sellers complain.
Name one other site where you can commit to buy something without immediately paying for that item. eBay has been the only site that allows this. That is changing and IMO that is a very good thing. I do agree that eBay should have been much more up front about how this was being done and also the idea that they randomly pick a card you have on file is bad and should be fixed, but the idea of making bidders put up a payment method prior to bidding or making an offer is a very good thing. Once they get the bugs worked out, I personally would like to see it mandatory for all sellers and buyers. No opt in or opt out. Honestly, I think the only reason why bids/offers are down for some is because it is optional. Remove the option and bids/offers will come back more evenly. If you make an offer or bid, plan on paying immediately or don't offer or bid.

·2 years agoIf everyone in the world had one bank account and one method of payment this would be great, but they don't.
As a regular buyer of higher value items I use numerous payment methods and don't need to have those methods tied up waiting to see if a seller accepts/declines/ignores my offer. I also use PayPal pay in 3 and paypal credit, both are now not even an option! I haven't made offers on 3 items this week because of this and those items are still sat on ebay unsold.
As a seller, the amount of negotiations I've been doing recently via messages rather than the offer system also tells me that my buyers are in the same boat and are sidestepping the issue. How many just walked away because it's too much hassle , I have no idea.
As per the post above, this doesn't appear to just be just a seller setting. Buyers are also being forced into this with no option to opt out.
Non paying bidders are a pain and absolutely should be put into this type of measure. Putting obstacles in the way of all buyers, limiting the ways that they can pay and treating everyone as a potential non payer is a cack-handed and wrong way of achieving what's needed.

·2 years agoI agree 100% with @ukdomainshop We have a system that already limits non paying buyers (2 strikes in 12 months) why not apply this auto pay to those buyers?
As a seller and buyer, I understand the intent of auto pay, but I do not think it was well thought out.
As a buyer, if I delete my preferred method of payment will I be able to leave it blank until the next auction win or BIN or offer and then select method to pay? If the answer is yes, what about my auto pay on ebay shipping labels that I currently use paypal?
I am not against the intent of Auto Pay, My biggest problem with this whole thing is no one was notified! this is typical, just shove it in there and let the buyer and sellers figure it out. Not a good business model.

·2 years agoThis is one of those "be careful what you wish for situations". Sellers have complained for YEARS about non-payers so eBay put out a solution. This has two pieces and involves the seller having the option turned on in their account settings as well as the buyer being in a pool of users that must provide the payment method. How they figured out who to put in that pool is anybody's guess and I am not sure the buyer has the option to turn it off.
As a seller I was unilaterally opted into the seller pilot pool but have since turned off the option as I do not have a lot of non-payers and I would much rather deal with the occasional non-payer than with a seller that either requests to cancel the order or waits till they have the item and simply open a return request. Frankly I don't see a lot of difference between the new feature on the auctions and best offers when compared to BIN/IPR.

·2 years agoI would assume that if there is an account setting that allows a buyer to specify or change his automatic payment method, it will only be available to those who are opted into the program.
I would start to make an offer on another item, and see if eBay offers you an opportunity to change the automatic payment method.
eBay lets seller change the payment method for shipping labels in this manner.

I don't know if this will work or not, but if it's possible, then this should be how you can do it. (I don't have any payment methods there, so I can't test this myself.)
You may be able to remove all your cards on that page, and that way, you would be prompted to enter a payment method each time you place an offer, so that would be one way that you would be able to choose your payment method for each purchase, Unfortunately, this would be a massive inconvenience, but if nothing else, you could choose your payment method.

The link is on the eBay.com domain, and the screenshot shows that it is on the My eBay page.
To get there without the link, go to My eBay, click the Accounts tab, which takes you to this page:
Then click on Payments underneath Payment information.
That account is not registered in Managed Payments, so any payment methods there are for buying, not for selling.

You should be able to delete that payment method and add a new one directly, or wait and see if you are prompted for a new one the next time you submit a bid or make an offer.
Not sure if removing all payment methods will cause a lowering of your open transaction limits or not, so it might be a good idea to add another payment method before you actually need one if you are removing your last or only payment method.

·2 years agoWhen PayPal completes the auto pay authorization process, a send button then appears for buyer to submit the authorization information to ebay, however after clicking the send button if a notice of "technical problem" appears ebay has not received the offer into it's system for submission to the seller.
Unfortunately Buyer is then prohibited from submitting another offer to the seller on their item, because ebay commerce has not accepted & processed the previous offer.
I contacted both Ebay & Paypal, both of which were of absolutely no help to address the situation, so I next contacted the seller who provided a new offer link on the item, which allowed me to send another auto pay offer, which the seller received & accepted
The first autopay authorization continues as pending & is estimated to last about 30 days to time out.
Thanks ebay for the dismal buyer experience

Would you please share with us what / how that email read. Copy and paste it here, less any personal info, of course. I'm curious exactly how they worded stuff.
I ask because I too am required to give a payment source when I place an offer on an item. I don't have a problem with doing that as when I make an offer, it is my desire to purchase the item, so for me, not a big deal.
With that said, when I go to make an offer, the payment source info presents on screen and defaults to whatever I set as the defaults, but I can still change things if I need to or want to.

·2 years agoAs a seller I learned about this on the boards in July, I had no knowledge I was opted in and immediately unchecked the auto pay requirements for buyers (offers and auction bidders). Non payers on auctions occur, but I think this is the wrong approach making a bidder go through this process. I knew I had the option to opt back in if needed.
They should apply this to those buyers who have 2 unpaid strikes in 1 year, not to force it on the buyers who pay quickly....99% do.
Fast Forward to today, I made a best offer and had to list a preferred payment on file to submit the offer, seller accepted and boom paid. I offered on another item and it was accepted, I thought I would be able to designate preferred payment but nope, that went right through. Now I have this auto pay set up on file, so what do i do when I bid on multiple auctions and ask the seller to combine shipping?
What if I want to change my auto payment method for different auctions in progress. I have 3 or 4 options I can pay with, do I have to keep changing the preferred auto payment prior to each auction won?
I understand this may be what some sellers want, but as a seller and buyer I think this is ludicrous. As a buyer I was going to hit the back button when I got this pop up. I am sure there are bidders and buyers with offers that do just that..the seller will never know.
I am not going to message sellers to add me to the exemption list, heck.... some sellers do not even know that they are opted in. ( like I found out as a seller thru these boards)
eBay, give buyers an option to change the preferred payment on each transaction after it ends (maybe 24 hrs) but not auto pay, and allow a better way for combined shipping.
just my 2 cents worth....

·2 years agoWHAT? Isn't this the basic purpose of this site. People come here searching for something they want or need to purchase. Find it, purchase it and pay for it.
Now auctions are very different from Fixed price listings.
Buyers here are spoiled in many ways, especially when they purchase something and then take days to pay or never pay. Most sites require payment at the time of purchase. But somehow here it seems wrong for some buyers. I think that is interesting.

·2 years agoThere is a little more to it. We all have these options in our Buyer Requirements now, but even if you have them checked off does not mean that they will apply to your listings. This is because this is not a site wide rule. It is still being tested. So only those in the test group are affected by this rule right now.
In the test there are some sellers in the test and there are some buyers. IDK how long it will be before the test is ended.
Ebay is aware that there is an issue for combined shipping. They are working on a resolution for that problem.

·2 years agoWas there any kind of an agreement between you and eBay that you authorized them to keep your payment method on file for future purchases? If it just does this automatically without a ok for each purchase I could see eBay getting some chargebacks.
I am with you on the auctions. Once I am outbid I consider that the end of my participation. I do not like when someone will out bid then rebid just below my bid. This just seems like fraudulent activity that I want no part of.

OP2 years agoI have 5 forms of credit on file...and one I have is "Pay Pal" credit for purchases only on eBay...credit but not a card.. I guess I am done using that. I don't know. It makes no sense.
They picked my debit bank card...not my real credit card with same bank with routing number for bidding and best offer...just like that.
And I rather not change anything because that could just cause another problem.

·2 years agoHave you reviewed your Buyer Requirements recently. They changed about a month and a half ago. There are two additional options at the bottom of the page.
With that said, those two options are not in play for everyone. Ebay is still testing this, so not everyone sees the same stuff.
I see your point about auctions. It may be advisable if you did not want to pay the lesser amount for the auction [because you were outbid and then the buyer removed their bid], when you get notified of this, you may want to go and retract your bid. However many likely would be excited that they were actually likely to get the item for less than what they thought. But I can see where it can be an issue for others.

·2 years agoI can relate.... my purchasing is way down... I estimate eBay and it's Sellers have lost approx. 125 transactions from me alone over this....
Alot of fees and profits on 125 transactions..... and probely a few million Buyers just like me doing the same thing....
When this update first landed I posted this would hurt commerce but the cheerleaders declared I was wrong....

·2 years agoThis is where communications with your seller is so important. Especially if you are a repeat buyer of theirs. All you need to do is explain to them that you are interested in several [or more] of their items. However you would be required to pay for each purchase at the time of purchase, which in turn would prevent you from getting a combined shipping discount.
Some sellers may put you on their exemption list so you won't have to pay for each item. Or they will refund you the overpayment on shipping after all purchases have taken place. However that option would give you less of a discount since there is a 30 cent per payment fee.
Now if you are contacting a seller that has never dealt with you before, they may not be as likely to want to put you on their exempt list because you have private feedback, so you are blocking them from being able to see it. That could make them reluctant to take the risk. I am NOT suggesting you have done anything wrong. Private feedback is allowed on the site. I'm just saying a seller may not be as willing to extend putting you on the exemption list without being able to review it.
