Lost Package - eBay International Standard Delivery - $1000
Summary: thefindfactory sold a $1,000 Garmin watch internationally using eBay International Standard Delivery but encountered issues when the package lost tracking 20 days post-dispatch. Facing a buyer's "item not received" (INR) claim, kensgiftshop advises refunding and opening a case with the carrier if not resolved soon. Other participants recommend using eBay International Shipping (EIS) for better protection, emphasizing that EIS covers sellers from claims once the item is received by them, even though it may cost more for buyers.
On June 1, I sold a Garmin watch for just under $1,000 to an international buyer in South Africa.
When purchasing a shipping label through eBay, I was given the option to use eBay International Standard Delivery. It was a little cheaper than the other options and appeared to offer similar services and protections, so I went with it. The only thing I noticed at the time was that it didn't allow me to purchase additional insurance, which was something I would have wanted on a package of this value.
After purchasing the label, I shipped the package via USPS to Asendia's facility in Bell, CA, with the label they provided.
According to the tracking, the package was received by Asendia and was dispatched from their Bell, CA facility on June 10. After that, it appears to have been transferred to PostNord. The last tracking update I can find is from June 11, when PostNord shows the package departing their sorting hub in Los Angeles, CA (see tracking screenshots).
I've also checked the tracking number through the Universal Postal Union Track & Trace system, and it only shows the same June 11 PostNord update.
At this point, it's been about 20 days since the last tracking update, and the buyer has now opened an INR claim.
For the best chance of either resolving the claim without having to issue a refund, receiving full compensation if the package ends up being lost, or otherwise resolving the situation without losing money, what would you recommend I do next?
TIA.

In the future, don't ship via eBay Standard Delivery -- use eBay International Shipping (EIS) instead.
If your international orders are shipped using EIS, you are covered from any buyer hassles once your item is confirmed received by EIS -- even from "item not received" cases.
It may cost your buyers more, but EIS is the best insurance policy for eBay sellers.

·3 months agoThis post is a suggestion for the future. I am adverse to as much aggravation as possible, therefore, for non-USA sales, I ONLY employ the eBay eIS program. For 5 sales, 2 complained of incomplete items, but e-Bay handled the problems at no cost to me.

·3 months ago · EditedFor $1000, EIS should be the only way an item like that should be shipped, at least by the average seller. This kind of carrier or customs liability is why I only ship EIS internationally now.
