eBay is not going to change the data structure used by 1.5 billion listings just to accommodate you. So you will need to make accommodations if you want to list it.

I drop all punctuation when possible as long as it doesn't make it too difficult to read. I have run into situations where something like "Book: Series" did not come up in a search for "Book Series" (notice the colon symbol up against the word "Book"). I don't know why or if that consistently interferes with searches, but I try and avoid any punctuation that isn't absolutely necessary.

This is what I do, even with short titles. All you need is your key words. Your buyers aren't going to be using the punctuation in most cases, and @jonathanbrightlight is correct in that the punctuation often "sticks" to the word it's adjacent to.

Use your remaining characters for the author and year. Your item will show up in the listings that include punctuation.

I would do what 1richdoug said but leave out all punctuation and if space available indoor outdoor should be included. Use all the characters and words you can that would guide someone to search for a book about growing stuff.
