Left a Buyer Negative Feedback and Rating But They Are Showing 100% Positive Feedback
I left negative comment and a negative rating for a buyer who did not pay AFTER I cancelled the transaction per the policy and AFTER eBay requested the feedback.
I did not violate policy as others originally stated by some in the "now deleted" post. My rating matched the comments. The buyer did not ask me to modify the comment nor the rating.
The user had other feedback that was similar (negative comments but a positive rating) so there is obviously something off. They only had 3 feedbacks - all negative comments but 100% positive rating.
Unfortunately, I was not able to see the feedback prior to sending out an offer since I am not able to see who is a watcher on an item.
Has anyone seen this before?

·2 years agoSo there is "no testing going on for sellers to give buyers negative feedback".
But a star rating would be different, wouldn't it? A tool possibly to help the AI weed out the bad buyers. Maybe those that were employed to do that left in the recent cull. If there ever was any.

·2 years agoGeneral comments on the can you or can't you leave FB on a cancelled transaction sub-discussion happening on this thread.
As far as I'm aware, sellers have always been able to leave FB on cancelled transactions. That option was never removed.
So many here saying they do not think it's possible so we did some testing this weekend on an account w/o autoFB.
Found that from seller hub>orders the option to leave FB does not appear in the drop down, nor does the option appear on the order details page. Perhaps that is why some believe it is not possible.
However the option does appear on this page linked below and always has. In fact, regular poster here Mr Lincoln has complained numerous times over the years about it because you cannot delete those cancelled items from this page. Hitting the X just temporarily removes them and they come right back when the page refreshes. https://www.ebay.com/fdbk/leave_feedback

OP2 years agoNo. It didn't have all those options and it wasn't a pop-up.
After I cancelled after the 4 days, I had returned to where all my orders are listed.
I was curious to see how a cancelled order appeared since this was a first for me.
I noticed I could leave feedback for the person through the normal process. You can see the screen shot below but obviously, the option to leave feedback is not there since I have already left feedback.
Once I clicked "Leave Feedback" - the screen came up, similar to what we normally see when we leave feedback for buyers however it didn't have the 2 fields for "custom" or "stored" feedback.
There was a star rating and a field underneath to leave text. It was not the eBay feedback window (with just the 1-5 stars) either because that appeared at the bottom while I was leaving feedback and I closed the eBay feedback pop-up window.
Also, when I was leaving the feedback, I also recall it looking like the older eBay site, if that makes sense. Even when the eBay feedback window popped up, it seemed like it was "newer".
Some have also mentioned that I am not even able to leave feedback but the option was there after I cancelled after the appropriate time frame.
I'm starting to wonder if I stumbled up on the OLD feedback page but that would be extra weird.

·2 years agoGo to your buyer's FB page @cminichiello0528 - does it show they are registered in another country?
I doubt it's the issue here, but we have seen in the past where a buyer makes a purchase on an international site that's not as updated as the .com site - an item that was listed on .com but purchase took place on an international site - so we've been dumped into old pages for cancels, returns, etc. One of the reasons I doubt that's the issue here is because we haven't been able to leave negs for buyers since 2008 so it's hard to imagine those old FB pages would still be lingering despite the layers of old code. But I thought it was worth mentioning in case the international purchase element was a factor.

Since we know phone support is about non existent, that's a waste of time. And since I have no social media, I do not have the avenue to use.
Sometimes folks have entirely too much confidence in what eBay will or will not do. eBay does not follow it's own rules. It arbitrarily enforces them selectively when it feels like it.

Buyers can leave negatives or neutrals for sellers. There is no reason to leave a "false positive" which is a negative comment disguised by a green positive FB.
Leaving honest but unhappy feedback for a seller is not a false positive, even if the blow is softened by a green dot, and would not be removed.
Sellers cannot leave "false positives" for buyers, and it is pointless to do so.
It does not affect the sellers rating nor do future buyers usually read positive Feedback Left For Others to see if there was a problem.
farmalljr
·2 years agoA false positive is a positive feedback with a negative comment. It's against the rules. It happens. The OP left a false positive feedback. I have received them myself. Sellers CAN and DO leave false positives. Regardless if the false positive has the desired affect, it does happen and it is against eBay's TOS.
Doesn't matter how you want to paint it, it IS happening and it IS against the TOS.

·2 years agoTrue. But let's remember the process to remove a neg feedback is different than removing a false positive. While eBay will occasionally remove negs through the hub, to get a false positive removed you have to report the seller. Those forms don't appear to be even looked at.
Though I think eBay has changed it's attitude about removing negs. You refund in full, then they will remove it.

·2 years agoUnfortunately, you did violate policy by giving them a positive rating and then leaving a negative comment. I saw those 3 feedback and all of them were done the same way. The customer probably asked ebay to remove them and they did, because they ARE against policy. You very well might have a deficit, on your account, for doing that. The only way to report a customer for non-payment is to cancel the transaction and indicate that they didn't pay. You cannot put it into the fb. As I said yesterday, those 3 green positives gave them a 100%. A negative brings your score down, but you can't leave them for a buyer. Stinks, but that's how it goes. Positive and negatives are what are used to determine the score. Neutrals are not included.

·2 years agoUnfortunately, you, as a seller, must have skipped some part of the rules for eBay sellers when you read the instructions.
Sellers are not ever allowed to leave negative FB for buyers. That's why the negative you left had a green positive donut beside it.
If the buyer had received other negatives, then apparently the buyer, for some reason, did not ask eBay to remove them.
The buyer probably contacted eBay and reported that negative and that's why it was removed. And you possibly received a defect.
What makes you think you did not violate policy?

·2 years agoI didn't see it mentioned so I'll add my two cents here. A customer made a mistake and won an auction I had. Afterwards, he apologized, said he already had it would I please cancel the sale. Since he was the only bidder, I said okay and relisted it. I found it odd however, that he was able to give me feedback on the transaction and gave me a positive FB and said something like "Went great, let me cancel the order". I thought that was interesting he was given that opportunity.

·2 years agoContinuing from the previous thread:
Because buyers cannot receive anything other than Positive feedback.
The way to handle this deadbeat, once the minimum 4-day payment window has passed, is to cancel the transaction. You will be able to select "Buyer did not pay" as the reason for cancelling (you must wait 4 days from the sale time before that reason will appear), after which you will be able to relist the item, and the deadbeat will get an Unpaid slap on his record. Two of those within 12 months and he will be blocked from many sellers' listings.
Do not leave false-Positives (negative comments on a Positive buyer feedback) as that can get you penalized. I see that two other sellers did the same thing, but it's still a violation if the deadbeat decides to complain about it.
Be sure to add the deadbeat to your Blocked Buyer list, and maybe tighten your Buyer Requirements to block buyers with more than two Unpaids in the past 12 months.
In the process for a seller to leave feedback for a buyer, the green Positive rating is hardwired in; you don't get any option to change that. You can only leave comments, and yes, those comments must be Positive.
So it's best to leave no feedback at all, and let the Unpaid slap (behind the scenes) function to get the deadbeat screened from future purchases.
Just to confirm: you didn't cancel until you were past the 96-hour (4-day) mark; is that right? You cannot cancel for non-payment until at least four days have elapsed, after which the Buyer Did Not Pay option will be available, and there would be no prompting for feedback after that.
cminichiello0528
OP2 years agoCorrect. I cancelled after the proper period and chose the buyer did not pay option.
I was able to leave feedback and no, it was not the "pop up" window for eBay asking me to leave feedback for them.
I immediately closed it and continued to leave the feedback that including a star rating and the text field for the comment. I've never had a buyer not pay so I can't compare this experience to any previous experiences.
I learned about blocking a buyer so yesterday, I went to look up the user name - looked at the feedback and thought it was strange to see the 100% positive rating and then came here to see what might have happened. I proceed to block them.
Thanks for the info you provided though!

·2 years agoIf there was a star rating to be chosen, what was it for? The only star ratings that can be given are for description, shipping cost, shipping speed and communication. How could you possibly rate a buyer’s shipping cost or speed?
cminichiello0528
OP2 years agoIt was only one option for the star rating specifically for the user.
And underneath, a field for comments.
This was NOT the eBay feedback pop up.
And this wasn't the "normal" screen where as a seller, you can leave feedback such as "custom" or "stored feedback".
In a way, I was surprised but left the feedback. If there was some type of policy violation, it would be really weird for eBay to allow the star rating. I'm going to guess that it was possible I somehow, landed on an outdate page or something odd to that affect. NO clue but I know what I saw and did.
wastingtime101
·2 years agoHi @cminichiello0528 . From everything you've said, I believe you were on this page:
https://www.ebay.com/fdbk/leave_feedback
Stars appear only when leaving FB for sellers. If you made a recent purchase, it's possible you saw the item you purchased directly above the item that wasn't paid for, and thought the stars for your purchase were tied to the non-payer's line item. That's definitely within the realm of possibility.
I do not think you are making anything up, but I do believe you misunderstood what you were looking at, perhaps you were moving through things quickly.
If there was some kind of test, as others have speculated above, please take a screenshot if you see it again and come post it here! People posting changes here is, unfortunately, how we usually learn about them since eBay's awful when it comes to communicating changes.
Go to this page:
https://commspreferences.ebay.com/commsprefs
Scroll down to "general preferences" and turn off feedback reminders. Then you won't be pestered to leave feedback for non-payers (or anybody).
If you like, you can set up automatic feedback for buyers here - I think it's an incredibly useful and time-saving feature: https://www.ebay.com/uas/selling-pref?show=automated_feedback
I don't put a single thought into leaving buyer feedback since it's automated. I save space in my brain for more important things. 😉
The good news here on violating a policy you weren't aware you were violating, is you said the buyer has a lot of similar FB. That means the buyer is highly unlikely to report your FB to eBay so you might skate by on this one. And now you know not to do it again. I saw someone's account suspended when they kept violating that policy. Sounds crazy, but they were an habitual offender.
Hope at least some of this helps.

·2 years ago@wastingtime101 The good news here ... is you said the buyer has a lot of similar FB. That means the buyer is highly unlikely to report your FB to eBay so you might skate by on this one.
It also means that they are buying from a lot of sellers who don't know how to use the Seller Protection policy that we call Strikes.
If all those false positives had been UID Strikes, that deadbeat would likely have been booted.

Hey @cminichiello0528 , go to this page:

You've already added the buyer to your blocked list, but take a look at the settings under Buyer Requirements. The most strict block you can apply is to block buyers who caused 2 cancellations of unpaid purchases within 12 months.
That will help you avoid at least some non-payers in the future. Don't forget to hit the slider that says "Apply above settings to active and future listings" before you click the submit button.

OP2 years agoThank you. I did look at the feedback page you sent and that wasn't the screen.
The questioning was along the lines of "Rater your buyer" 1-5 star rating and directly underneath, a text block so a comment could be written. I'd never seen the screen before but I have also never had a "customer" not pay.
If it happens again, I'll definitely leave a screen shot. I am wondering if the other 2 people who left feedback saw the same screen.
momtoabeautifuldaughter
·2 years agoIt is not possible to leave a true negative for a buyer, the negative comments you left on a positive (green) feedback will be removed if the buyer reports you and you will get a violation on your account.
cminichiello0528
OP2 years agoYou didn't read my other responses where I added more information. You're only repeating what others have already stated and I provided additional information. I now the difference between a pop-up and not a pop-up - not only as a former developer but as a normal web user.
What's a shame is that I came here as part of a seller community to share my experience in hopes that others sellers would be aware and to read feedback regardless of the positive rating. I truly assumed that this was a scam account or some other odd activity that I stumbled upon.
I would have NO other reason to believe that I would be violating a policy if eBay provided an opportunity to provide a star rating in addition to written feedback to user who did not pay and AFTER I cancelled the order due to non-payment. This was NOT a pop-up and not the regular "leave feedback" screen. I know what I saw and I know what I did.
Fellow sellers could have simply responded with "Huh? That's weird...." or "Nope, never saw that before..." but instead its either I am hallucinating or I am "violating" a policy.
Besides, if you read the policy itself, it does state a "rating" along with a "comment" in the same sentence. If all buyers including those who did not pay, why write the policy as if someone could deliberately post a negative comment with a positive transaction rating?
Maybe this should be followed up with "By the way, we default all buyers to positive." ?
Seems that eBay relies on the community to interpret policies rather than spend time to clarify their actual policies.
Anywho....I'll say it again. I know what I did and I know what I saw and I definitely will think again before I return to this community for any future support.

·2 years agoSorry, but you wont get any 'support' when you are not following Ebays guidelines for buyer feedback. The rules are the same for all of us. No exceptions, sense of entitlement or not.
cminichiello0528
OP2 years agoEntitlement? Wow.
Here's the policy from eBay:
"Any misuse of feedback isn't allowed. Feedback content should match the positive or negative rating that was given in both buyer and seller feedback. For example, a negative comment should not be left with a positive rating. "
Key words: feedback content + positive of negative rating.
Whether you believe me or not, I was asked to provide a rating. My feedback content matched the rating I provided. End of story.
lacemaker3
·2 years ago@cminichiello0528, I understand where you are coming from, but I'm afraid that you are mistaken about this.
The policy does not refer to the buyer star-rating that you saw, which appears to be some kind of test that eBay may be conducting. The policy refers to the visible feedback that you left on your buyer's feedback page (and your own feedback-left page).
By eBay's definition, any user who wins an auction or commits to purchase a fixed price item is called a "buyer", whether or not they have paid (yet). So the user is still considered a buyer, in the eBay policy, even if they don't pay.
Sellers are not allowed to leave anything but positive feedback ratings for buyers (by eBay's definition), and they are not allowed to leave negative comments in a positive feedback.
I understand that your feedback was truthful, but the truth can still be negative, and the feedback comment you left was negative. eBay policy doesn't allow sellers to do that.
If your buyer reports that feedback comment, it will be removed. Like this feedback comment has been removed, which you left for another buyer sometime in the last 10 days, since this item was sold. What happened with this one?
broto_64
·2 years agoIf by "lack of support" you mean sellers aren't co-signing your nonsense that will not happen here. These sellers are all speaking the truth, none of us truly know what happened but we do know your "glitch" did not happen as you stated simply because sellers are not allowed to leave negative feedback for a buyer and there is also no star rating system for that.
The only negatives and stars that can be left would be from a buyer to a seller, however I also don't see that under your feedback "left for others" tab. What I do see is the negatively worded positive feedback you left for one buyer that stated "The buyer never paid & no communication. No wonder they have "iou" in their user name." And that was for this item:
momtoabeautifuldaughter
·2 years agoYou are positively wrong. I did read your additional posts, and as a seller with over 50,000 feedback I know very well how it works. You did not actually leave a negative feedback, you left negative comments but for around 16 years you can only leave a positive (green) mark for a buyer.
cminichiello0528
OP2 years agoI could care less if you had a million feedback ratings. You are positively wrong. I KNOW that you can only leave positive feedback ratings for buyers however, technically this person was not a buyer of MINE. Oy.
lacemaker3
·2 years agoBut you did leave a negative comment with a positive rating, which is what you're not supposed to do. See the screenshot below. eBay doesn't have AI that scans the comments to identify whether they have a negative or positive meaning. They enforce this policy when the user who received it makes a complaint about it. Apparently, your buyer is not aware of that, or doesn't bother.
I think that @bennotbill may have been right, in this post here:
And if so, you probably did see the 5-star rating that you reported. eBay has been making a lot of changes lately, including changes to feedback. Buyers can now include a picture in their feedback for a seller, for example.
eBay may be testing out a kind of DBR or detailed buyer rating, like the 5-star DSRs or detailed seller ratings. They may or may not implement it, eventually. I would not be surprised if they don't display the DBRs publicly, although they might use it behind the scenes, perhaps to enable a bidder-requirement block.
iamalwaysright
·2 years agoIf ebay is actually doing this, I'll bet sellers would ONLY be able to leave buyers 5 out of 5 stars for every "DBR" category, and nothing less. It'll need to follow suit with not being able to leave buyer's anything less than positive "100%" feedback. More redundant fluff to feed buyer ego. But hey, if it means they'll come back and buy more, create a higher feedback level than "positive" like "extremely positive" feedback and make it a violation to leave any feedback comment less than "extremely positive."
One of my automated feedback comments calls the buyer "hands down the best buyer in the world."
cminichiello0528
OP2 years agoThis has to be what happened. It appears that there were 2 other sellers that left similar feedback and when I saw that, I wondered if they knew that their rating had changed, assuming they went through the same process. This is why I came to the community because I thought maybe scam buyers found ways to hack the system! From my perspective, this wasn't a buyer of MINE so I didn't think twice that the feedback screen looked different. It was also done after I cancelled the transaction and most of the people on here are stating that its not even possible to do that yet I did. So this is the only plausible explanation.
fern*wood
·2 years agoThis I can wholeheartedly agree with your above statement!!! I'll meet you in the middle. If ebay has started offering star ratings for our buyers as lacemaker speculates, more of us will start seeing them. From your last post, I think you do now see you left negative comments for your "buyer", but it was not a negative rating and was in fact a green positive, thus a violation unless that has also changed without an announcement of any kind. ·2 years agoHaha. What a weird policy change. What was eBay’s logic for this?
“Okay [seller], your buyer didn’t pay you after they won so you didn’t get your money and you’ll have to relist the item again to sell. We’ve cancelled the transaction and gave the buyer a payment strike which may affect their ability to buy or bid in the future. We see that you’ve already added this buyer to your blocked list as to not let history repeat itself. Also the buyer won’t be able to leave any feedback for you for fear of any retaliatory or disgruntled feedback they may leave since they got a payment strike from your sale. And as you know buyers cannot receive any negative feedback, only positive. Up until recently you weren’t able to leave the strike-issued buyer feedback as well, but we’ve changed that and now you can. So how’s about leaving the buyer a positive feedback, okay?â€

When you cancelled the unpaid transaction, the deadbeat got a Strike .
You can automatically Block any bidders with Strikes.
Most sellers do Block bidders with Strikes.
EBay does not use feedback to assess member accounts.
Who do you think you were leaving the FB for?
The deadbeat knows they didn't pay.
The deadbeat got punished for nonpayment with a Strike.
EBay doesn't use FB to assess member accounts.
Most sellers never see buyer feedback , because over 85% of transactions are Fixed Price, or Buy It Now on an Auction, or are a last nanosecond bid on an Auction, and the seller does not see who is buying until they buy.
The only ones who see you leave negative FB for the deadbeat are your future customers, and they don't see the deadbeat's name, only that you badmouth customers.
Basically, you are being protected from your own bad temper and poor judgement.
@kensgiftshop--If you used nonpayment as the reason to cancel the order, neither side could leave feedback.
Good point.
The OP left a false positive which is not allowed, instead of using the 96 hour automatic Cancellation process which gives deadbeats the abovementioned Strike.

Please read all my messages before making accusations of bad judgment and temper.
I didn't bad mouth a "person who didn't pay", I left feedback that spoke the truth along with a 1-star so other sellers could be warned.
