Large insertion fee charges caused by eBay category taxonomy change – looking for guidance
Hello everyone,
I’m posting here to see if anyone has experienced a similar situation or has advice on how to escalate this properly within eBay.
I am a seller who lists products in bulk using eBay’s Inventory / Offer / Publish APIs. Recently, I ran into a serious billing issue caused by an internal eBay category taxonomy change.
Here is what happened:
I was using category 11770, which had historically been a valid leaf category.
eBay later migrated this category as part of a taxonomy update (this has been confirmed in writing by eBay Developer Support).
To remain compliant, I updated and relisted all affected products under the new category as required.
After doing so, each listing was charged a $20 insertion fee.
In total, this resulted in approximately $33,000 USD in insertion fees.
Important context:
This was not caused by incorrect API usage or seller error.
The relisting was done specifically to comply with eBay’s category changes.
Developer Support confirmed the taxonomy migration but stated that refunds are handled by Seller/Billing Support.
Seller Support, in turn, advised that they cannot resolve this and directed me back to the API side.
I currently do not have an Account Manager, so I am stuck between teams with no clear owner for the issue.
At this point, I am trying to understand:
Has anyone else been charged insertion fees due to category deprecation or taxonomy migration?
What is the correct escalation path for a platform-caused billing issue of this scale?
Is there a way to get this reviewed by a billing, finance, or executive-level team?
I am not disputing that the API itself works; I am only seeking a fair review and credit for fees that resulted from an internal platform change.
Any guidance from experienced sellers, community moderators, or eBay representatives would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

OP8 months agoI want to share a brief summary of how I eventually got my money back.
I went through multiple standard customer service channels, but most representatives were either unable or untrained to handle this type of issue.
The Developer team was quite professional and clearly understood the problem, but they lacked the necessary permissions to take action.
What ultimately worked was contacting eBay through their official Facebook account. After that, the issue finally progressed.
Based on this experience, I’d strongly recommend reaching out to eBay’s official Facebook support for similar cases.
Thank y'all for providing solutions!

·9 months agoWhat was the cause of the $20 charge per item? The only $20 insertion fee I see is:
Select Business & Industrial categories:
Did you switch the items to one of these categories?

OP8 months agoUnfortunately, yes. For some reason, ebay developer changed doormat category to heavy equipment, I am not noticed.

·9 months agoNot many here use the API or list in bulk that way, so I'm going to give a shout out to @devon@ebay @kyle@ebay @elizabeth@ebay as this is likey above the pay grade of most of the customer service reps who won't know about listing via the API. Perhaps one of them can point you in the right direction. Also, I also don't know much about it or about the taxonomy change, I understand the gist of what you're saying but not any of the details. So, just like you found this forum, under the Selling section, you'll see that 2 tabs over from that is eBay Groups & within that tab there is a section for Developer Forums. I wonder if there's any staff on those forums? Or someone who may be able to guide you as to who to contact?
